You can swap motherboards/CPUs/disk drives/whatever on an x86 Linux
system, power the machine on, and watch Linux boot up without problems
in most cases. If you watch the boot messages scrolling by, you may
notice things like "Unknown IDE controller", and you will be limited to
text-only mode until you re-run XConfigurator/SaX/XF86Setup if you've
changed your video card. I would suggest recompiling the kernel fairly
soon after swapping the motherboard; having support for the particular
IDE chipset your new board has will make many things faster.
Also, why stick with Intel? Get a T-bird or Duron, save money, get
better performance, and avoid the RAMBUS fiasco.

Found an ISA based SCM SwapBox PCMCIA adapter that works fine with a
normal 10/100 3Com NIC, so I'm fairly confident I don't have a problem
with my kernel (2.4.1-pre9) or my PCMCIA configuration (tried versions
3.1.22 thru 3.1.24).
dmesg says:
cs: memory probe 0x0d0000-0x0dffff: clean.
wvlan_cs: WaveLAN/IEEE PCMCIA driver v1.0.5
wvlan_cs: (c) Andreas Neuhaus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
wvlan_cs: RequestConfiguration: Bad Vcc
There is also the high beep low beep sound. I have 2 of these cards,
they both work find in a stock debian 2.2 potato Toshiba laptop.
Does Vcc mean voltage like it does in electronics?

Which "two"? Those integrated on the Motherboard? Probably never.

With the apropiate Hardware, perhaps a soldering Iron and some diodes.

The program setserial is of (here only) use to inform the kernel, that
you have non-standard mappings. It can't put Jumpers by itself...

Subject: Mehrere serielle Schnittstellen auf einem IRQ
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Organization: We don't need no organisation
Date: Sat, 29 Jul 1995 07:27:40 GMT
Nun etwas Grundlagen:
=====================
=============
| |\
8 | INT | \
|---------| >--------------- IRQ Bus-Leitung
2 | | /
| |/O
5 | OUT2 |
|-----------*
0 |
|
=============
|\
INT-1 ---| >o----*
|/ | |)
*----| )
| )
|\ | )
INT-2 | >o---------| )o----------*
|/ | ) | 1/4 74##125
| ) |
*----| ) | |\
|\ | |) | | \
INT-3 ---| >o----* *----------| >------> BUS
|/ | /
|/O
|
|) |
OUT2-1 ---------------| ) |
| ) |
| ) |\ |
OUT2-2 ---------------| )o---| >o----------------*
| ) |/
| )
OUT2-3 ---------------| )
|)

Man

There are "fanatics" in all interest groups. The same type of person
who would leave a Windows Newsgroup to drop in a Linux Newsgroup and
start a flame war exist in the Linux world as well.
Also, perfectly reasonable people who would not DREAM of ranting at
another individual face-to-face in a store, classroom or living room
think nothing of doing it here. This type of text based forum does
not seem to be real to some people so they act less polite than is
normal. Once you understand these things you can just ignore what is
unacceptable to you and learn from the rest.
That said, no matter what horror stories you have read or heard about
just start an appropriate thread and ask away, if you are willing to
do some work on your own to get Linux to do what you want there are
people here to help. As a student, Linux offers some tools that are
expensive or not available in the Windows world and learning Linux
just to get at those is as good a reason as any to "climb on the band
wagon".
Welcome to Linux! :-)

Tina:
Most of us who work in the field must be aware of both (i.e. Unix, MS
Windows) operating systems and some. What we're really dealing with is
preferences. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know what I like on my cheese burger, too.
My preferences are better than yours are. It's been going on in this world
for...quite a while. The hope is that we will grow in the direction of the
mind and how we choose to think...and therefore we are. So, if all ya got
is a buncha preferences when ya leave here- guess what - this world of
constant change has already upset everything that you've so carefully and
cleverly learned. If you seek wisdom and learn to apply it, you can take it
with you.
The POSITIVE use of this device (newsgroup) is a great opportunity to
demonstrate what we can accomplish by working together. Remember: the word
universe means one song. We are all separate notes that can make music- if
and when we work together.
A true MVP (i.e. Most Valuable Player) makes everyone around them more
valuable. How many people can you help make more valuable today? (again,
this newsgroup is an oportunity)
I am learning quickly that the ones who are throwing the less-than-spam
comentaries (i.e. no intent to give anything useful; packed with negativity;
certainly not the majority!) are pretty consistent in their
droppings...shame and a sin.
I don't believe that you addressed your statement(s) correctly in your
introduction (i.e. TO ALL LINUX USERS). If you'd browse around, it is clear
that there are many very intelligent people who really aim to share what
they know. In fact, they all deserve a huge cyber applause (cheers)!
Yeah...there's hecklers, too, in Linuxville.
All the best,
DjM
