Dude,

Winmodems use the host CPU to convert digital signals to analog signals in
order to be sent over the phone lines. Regular modems have a special chip
to perform this function. The programming details for for Winmodems is
proprietary (i.e. there are no Linux drivers for this class of devices).

One of the tradeoffs of hardware and so-called "software modems" is that the
hardware modem does not waste CPU cycles where the software modem is
upgradeable via a new driver.

FYI: I just picked up a new serial modem as I was using USB on my Windows ME
box. I was able to snag an ELSA external which installs easy and runs great
($50-$60).

All the best,
DjM

Sort of true. Any motherboard that uses the i810 chipset won't work
properly with Linux 2.2.x, you need the 2.4 kernel and so far there are no
shipping versions of Linux that include it. Yes, you can upgrade, but it
takes some work. The problem here is the shared system/video memory. You
either need a GART patch, or 2.4.

Linux itself will work, but if you try to use graphical applications, it
won't.

Tina,

I'm wondering what operating systems have to do with racism? I have been
unable to reason how and/or why the principles of racisim (i.e. which
applies to living beings) is so very definitely applied to an inanimate
object. I do not see myself as an object and would not approve of somebody
projecting it so. Your argument is null and void.

The impression that you made on me with these remarks is that you are very
angry and you hope to share it with us. Can ya come back soon?

The fact that you have a learning curve (i.e. learn how to work in a
Unix/Linux environment) to overcome was anticipated BEFORE you got here.
More specifically, there is a learning curve for Unix (i.e. Linux). Did you
ever wonder why Unix System Administrators get the big bucks? Make no
secret: there's lots to learn here in Linuxville. However, anyone and
everyone can do it if they choose.

The kicker to all of this is that- all of this stuff is changing as we read
and write...so there will be more to learn to. That is already known, too.
No sense in flame-throwing those who have been and/or are on the path.

I wish you well. If I see one of your questions out there that I believe I
can contribute to positively- I gladly will. So, please don't feed the hate
mongers.

Thank you and have a nice day.

You can bop over to rawhide and grab an rpm of 2.4 -

then rpm -ivvh kernel-2.4... etc.

But I prefer to select my own kernel build options.

If you are running X Windows (i.e. graphical components; most people are),
you can use modemtool to configure your modem. In addition, you can call
modemtool back up to change your current setting (i.e. change to ttyS0,
ttyS1, etc...). This utility will also set the link that you would
otherwise have to set up to point at /dev/modem.

To run modemtool:

su -
export DISPLAY=:0
modemtool

Just click on the device that you want to enact.

Did you run Xconfigurator?

You must have installed the SVGA server (e.g. /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA) as
your video card deserves this setting. FYI: I am using another video card
with a different chip set and mine also uses this setting.

The symollic link /etc/X11/X must point to this SVGA server. Make sure this
link is in place.

If you are unsure of what servers you installed, use this command:
ls /usr/X11R6/bin/XF*

All the best,

Am I not alone in thinking this person is probably mentally ill, and that
someone ought to phone a doctor, or possibly notify hotmail just in
case they can do something for him/her?

I still recall the Fabricant missives, when we all got sent his letters

There is nothing eslse that can be in a "folder" (i.e. directory)
except files (and other directories). You read them. Particularly the
one called README. Your instructions are there. If you like, Il paste
them here:

If you are not using our pre-compiled Debian package, you will need to
compile WvDial yourself. This is not too difficult as long as you have a
few things installed on your Linux system:
        - pppd 2.2.0f or 2.3.5, with the pppd program preferably
                at /usr/sbin/pppd.
        - gcc 2.7.2 or higher, with g++ (but you don't necessarily need
libg++ or libstdc++, as WvDial doesn't need them)
        - GNU make; you may need version 3.75 or higher, I'm not sure.
Almost any halfway modern Linux system should have all of these.
Building WvDial is a simple matter. First, check the Makefile to see if
everything looks okay to you. By default, wvdial and wvdialconf will
install in /usr/local/bin with their man pages in /usr/local/man/man1.
That's probably right for most systems.
To build and install WvDial, then:
        make
        make install

Got it? Gooooooooood.

Do you know which exact modem you have?(Hint, Lucent doesn't make modems but
they do make the chips that some other companies put in their modems). I'm
asking because most but not all modems with Lucent chipsets are winmodems
and either are not supported at all or require more skill than you have just

I have three of this M/B. Two running Win98SE and one running RH 7.0. Very
sweet, but onboard Promise ATA100 controller is not supported by all distros
of Linux. Be advised! There are several patches for the 2.2.x kernel which
allow it to work fine. And the 2.4.0 kernel DOES support it natively, but is a
bit too unstable at the moment for me.

I would not overclock the CPU. The AMD Athlon 1000 in the boxed factory set is
about ~$220 at www.spartantech.com and it includes an AMD approved fan! I'm
using these and they are FAST!

It adds another layer of protection against system failures and the cost
difference is minimal.

Not "out of the box." You need to either compile and install the
back-ported USB support or download and compile a newer kernel
that includes this support. I'm running a USB scanner with RH
v6.1 and kernel 2.2.18 and this kernel version includes support
for USB keyboards.

I am in process of developing new hardware site, and I am looking for a
people that would like to participate in the development.

The site I am developing will be specializing in hardware and may be
software that things normal people can buy (we're not going to have a review
of $10,000,00 SGI workstations :).

So far I've finished site design, and registered a domain name
(www.hardwareqa.com).

Our development team consists of five people (including me).

If you are interested please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or even
better contact me on icq (102833994).
