How can you disable the hpt? I can't find anything in the bios to
disable it it, the "integrated peripherals" screen has options to
disable ide1 and ide2, but that's the 2 33 ide ports. Now the blue hpt
screen says press ctrl-H to configure, but hitting it and/or holding it
down doesn't do anything. I can't enter the highpoint config screen at
all.

Try adding the rest of the runlevels (1, 4 & 5) to the line.

I see that the milo and milo.dd files are present. Check out the

Subject: slow system, SCSI to blame?
Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 00:53:27 -0700

Hello,

I've got RedHat linux running on a Pentium 120 with 24mb of RAM. I know this
system isn't going to get going very fast, but it seems to me it is much
slower than it should be. I'm trying to figure out what could be the cause.
I measured my SCSI drive speed with hdparm and got the following:

/dev/sda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 24.75 seconds = 5.17 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 37.48 seconds = 1.71 MB/sec

These numbers seem awfully low to me. I've got an Adaptec 2940AU with an
Ultra SCSI drive. Should I expect higher performance out of this drive? or
is my system slow because I don't have a lot of memory? Any help is
appreciated.

Hy everybody,

I've got the problem, that I can't use my CD-R (which is an IDE device)
with my other hardware (SCSI Controller with 3 harddrives, a ZIP drive
and a SCSI Scanner).

The SuSE support data base says, that ... CD-Writer IDE-SCSI emulation
does not work if you have SCSI harddisk and IDE CD-R...

Does anybody have an idea how it will work nevertheless??

Thanks for help

Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 08:37:43 GMT

I have a PS printer hooked up to my Linux machine. When windows
machines print to my printer via SAMBA, their jobs come out perfectly!
However, when I print from my own machine, I only get a line of code
at the top of the page and then nothing else. This happens when I
print ascii, PS, or basically anything from my own machine. Any
suggestions on how to remedy this, or on what to look for? Printing
used to work flawlessly!

I use the Mandrake 6.1 and I can't configure my souncard.
It is a ct4810 model, but with a ct2518 chipset.
Wich module should I use.
Of course sndconfig reconise it as a ES1371, but it looks wrong.

Thanks

I'm using an Intel 815e motherboard with integrated video, audio and
ethernet. I don't have a separate video card so I'm not sure about the
Rage Pro 128 but I believe it is supported.

I use RH 7 and it works fine (2.2 kernel). The only minor problem I had
was that the installation appeared to default to the wrong ethernet driver
module on installation and I had to change this to the correct driver
(e100).

Tell me about it. I recently had to re-install Win98 and it took
*8* *tedious* reboots before it finally came up in a reasonably
usable fashion. I still have a couple pieces of hardware it
refuses to recognize, mostly due to "plug and pray" issues. Linux
has never taken more than one reboot during an install, and by
using a modularized kernel I can change hardware configurations
without having to reboot.

> >Sure one won't mind doing all this things. BUT LINUX DOESN'T MAKE IT

I suspect a subtantial part of this "ease" derives from the fact
that most people don't have to install Windows on their
computers. If they had bought computers with linux
pre-installed, you'd see no end of whining about the difficulties
getting it to install and recognize your hardware.

Have you installed them? Try running "rpm -q make" to see if the
"make" package has been installed:

[john@starfleet john]$ rpm -q make
make-3.77-6

This shows I have make v3.77 build 6 installed here.

If it's not installed, get out your distribution CD, find the RPM
directory and run "rpm -ivh
[path/to/RPM/directory]/make-n.nn-n.rpm" (where the "n.nn-n"
represent the version and build number on your distribution CD.
Then run "make; make install" or whatever as required. But your
distribution CD should have pre-compiled binary packages of most
basic software you will need, so compiling your own stuff from
source won't be an issue unless/until you need a program
unavailable in pre-compiled form.

Sure. I've been using one of those here for a couple years
already. I've never tried Arkeia or taper with it, but it does
work fine with tar or afio.

Hello. Yes, but with X 4.0.2 , NVIDIA-kernel-0.9-5.src.rpm ,
kernel 2.2.18 + ide patch ( Promise 100 ) .
No rpm for X 4.0.2 "old" type of install.

The problem started when I enabled my parallel port and system sounds.
Shutting down from GNOME (rather than KDE) works fine (the system shuts
down). Therefore, not to dwell in this any longer, I have uninstalled KDE
and am working fine using GNOME.

Hello.
For SuSE You have special boot disk from SuSE on www. Boot ok.
After that you may build custom 2.2.18 + ide-patch from Hedrick
( www.linux-ide.org).
