AFAIK, that's just the way those drivers work for that chipset. If it
annoys you too much, you can install the ALSA drivers. www.alsa-project.org.
Those work quite well, and get rid of the popping.

Have you tried? I doubt your spec would be good enough to *joy* a DVD
movie, not even with MMX/3dNow. But lets give it a try:
What mpeg player software do you use/suggest? (a link would be good)
How do I for that mpeg player compile it as optimised for MMX/3DNow? (I
guess the README will tell)
I'll try to setup that software, and tell If I am satisfied
Have you tried some of the trailers you can get from

Add the line
drive a: file="/dev/hdd" exclusive
to your /etc/mtools.conf file.
Chnage /dev/hdd to suit your system. Your device is NOT /dev/fd0. Look in
/var/log/messages for a line containing LS-120.

The Intel NIC and Matrox G400 are definately supported. If you get XFree
4 and the proper drivers from Matrox, you can even use OpenGL and both
heads. It is, of course, impossible to say what exactly the
'CrystalClear' audio device is, but it probably isn't hardware-compatible
with the SoundBlaster 16. More likely, it is an integrated Crystal
CS423x (ISA) or 4280/46xx (PCI) codec. These are all supported by
current kernels, however.

My problem: I have a USR 5610 pci internal fax
modem.. it works FINE with the kernel 2.2.x
series, using setserial to bind it's irq/port to
/dev/ttyS*... NOW, when I use a 2.4.0 kernel, the
kernel detects my modem at boot and assigns it to
ttyS00(yes, two 0s).. however, there is no
listing for ttyS00 in Documentation/devices.txt
and setserial reports the port in use when trying
to assign it somewhere else.. anyone know to
remedie this?

Hey all,
I've got this ATAPI CD-ROM. I'm not exactly sure of the model,
but info from the vendor specifies it as a:
NEC-3.04, I-F5, 17/40x CDROM
My kernel identifies it as:
> cat /proc/ide/ide1/hdc/model
NEC CD-ROM DRIVE:28D
I've always used the default IDE-ATAPI driver, ide-cdrom version 4.58,
and it 'works' fine. But every time I change the CD, I get the
following logged errors:
>dmesg
ATAPI device hdc:
Unknown Error Type: (reserved) -- (Sense key=0x09)

...and so on and on...
I've never bothered with it, but it fills up dmesg with
junk and it's getting on my nerves. If someone knows why
this message keeps showing up, I'd appreciate an answer.

Have you checked out http://www.sgi.com/linux/ yet?
I tried Hard Hat which was basically Red Hat 5.2 for Indy (the only SGI
supported for Linux at the time) and I didn't have much luck. I have
heard that it runs well though. My Indys were pretty old...

Hi,
Are you by any chance running kernel 2.4.0 & xfstt? (True Type Font Server)
The combination of XF 4.0.x, xfstt and kernel 2.4.0 causes the X-server
to lock up. Not running xfstt solved it for me. Herbert, the author is
working on a fix.
Hope this helps,

Subject: AMR modem & CS4280 sound chib
Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2001 01:02:40 GMT
hi all
this is about AMR modems again
well I have i810 MB with i810 video card & crystal CS4280 sound chib
built-in.
my modem is volcano AMR modem (ICH82801AA chib on it).
so easily I managed to configure the video card with support from Intel
website. I had troubles configuring the sound chib even after using
ALSA drivers which I discovered that their drivers configure the chibs
built on cards (not built in the MB) like they got a module called "snd-
card-cs461x" but the module I should use is "snd-cs461x" which is
already provided in my linux distribution and loaded successfully BUT
with no sound in the end !!!
anyway I'm working on it and hope that I manage someday to make it !
but the main problem is about the AMR modem which I know it's a
winmodem but can be supported in linux.
I know that PCtel AMR modem has a driver for linux...so since it does
then AMR is generally supported...am I right?
but this volcano really sucks...the company does not have even a
website !!!
so anyone here having my configurations managed to configure it
successfully???
TIA
and thanx 4 listening

Exactly. Now the shoe is on the other foot, big-time. Instead of
having little or no control, Linux dumps complete and total control into
your lap, and you have to know how to control it. It's a complete about-
face turn-around.
Now, if your modem is actually a software or win-modem, yes, it works
with Windows. It won't work with Linux, because Linux doesn't support
them. Win-modems are little more than cheap sound cards with the speaker
and microphone connected to the phone line. All the noise is generated and
translated through a software program that Linux doesn't have. Linux will
most likely never support win-modems, because they're an unnecessary drain
on the CPU's resources.
Now, if you *do* have a normal modem, wvdialconf should be able to
detect it and configure wvdial for you. You'll then know which device your
modem is called (/dev/ttyS?). From there you can configure other setups
for minicom and whatever network dialing scheme(s) your distro supports.
The first thing you MUST do, is be sure you can communicate with your
modem. minicom is one of the best ways, as you can type 'AT' (short for
ATtention!) and watch the modem respond with 'OK', meaning that the modem
heard your command. Everything is displayed on the screen, and you can
configure the non-volatile memory (NV-RAM) with the correct settings, so
that when the modem resets, it's all set up and ready to go. (Windows does
all this behind the scenes.)
Anyway, the main thing is being sure you can communicate with your
modem and learning what its device name is. Then you can tell other
programs where the modem is, so they can use it too. Once that is done,
you can just use the basic pppd and chat to dial the modem and jump online.
Those two programs are the bottom-line. Everything else is just a front-
end for the PPP daemon (pppd) and chat (which sends commands to, and reacts
to responses from the modem). Look in your /usr/doc directory for HOWTOs,
or visit http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/ and http://freshmeat.net/ for modem
and ISP HOWTOs, and visit http://www.theory.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
for a step-by-step tutorial for getting your box connected to your ISP.

Dump Corel. Mandrake, SuSE, and RedHat are a little friendlier. Corel
tries to be like Windows and fails miserably, plus it's buggy and behind
the times. Mandrake currently seems to be in the lead with respect to
novice user support, but that could change any day with the way this race
is going.

Linux is a tool. You use it, not the other way around (a'la Windows).
Linux will NOT hold your hand. You have to hold Linux's hand. Don't worry
about recompiling. Most distros are set up to support as much as possible,
and everything has already been compiled for you - except support for the
very newest hardware. You may never have to recompile, unless you find
something you just really, really HAVE to have. <grins>
Find out if that modem works with Linux. Until that is answered, the
rest is just an exercise in bashing your head against the wall...
