Yan,

Thank you, no. I pulled it down from the other NG where you posted it.

Yes, they both use National Semiconductor chips from the same family. There
is supposedly a generic natsemi.c module included in the 2.4.0 kernel, but I
could never get it to work. Netgear ships the same driver disk with both the
FA-311 and FA-312, so my hope is your driver may work.

Thanks, dude. I'll try to let you know if I get it working.

I had had all kind of problems trying to write CDR on my Acer CDRW (6206A
and 8432). Now, since I have replaced these two CDRW with an IOmega
12x10x32, I have had not problem at all. I heard that the IOmega 12x10x32
is actually manufactured by Plextor and its firmware can be upgraded with
the Plextor one. However, I have seen any proof of that. May be, someone
who reads this response will like to comment and give some pointer in this
matter.

Hi,

Has anyone had successfully configured the Audio system on the Asus K7M
mobo, particularly the SoundBlaster part? When I compiled the kernel with
soundblaster enable, and append="sb=0x220,5,0,1", dmesg showed the
following warnings:

This sound card may not be fully Sound Blaster Pro compatible.
In many cases there is another way to configure OSS so that
it works properly with OSS (for example in 16 bit mode).
Please ignore this message if you _really_ have a SB Pro.

Has anyone got any experience of this card under Linux.
I have noticed a problem with data transfers being slower in one
direction through the hub than in the reverse direction.
I'm not talking of a slight difference, I'm getting from 200K to 80M
bits/sec (1M to 3M bits/sec being the norm) in one direction and 65M to
85M bits/sec in the reverse direction.

Has anyone come-across/sorted-out this.

Cheers,

Chris,

Looks real cool, dude. One suggestion. How about adding a PCMCIA slot? Then
you could add PCMCIA hard disks, modems, memory, etc.

Just a thought. A picture like the LART unit you referenced would be cool.

Good Luck,

Suggest you go to www.google.com and do a search on A7V, ATA100, and Linux.
I've been prodded by some of my Linux friends to write a mini HowTo on my

I don't know if the "N" version is supported per se, but the ultra 160
controllers based on the adaptec 29160 are supported with the aic7xxx
driver and work well. The trick is to find out about the "N".

You'll probably find the SC850 with its 10 bay hot-swappable easier to
deal with (extra cooling, one cable for 10 drives on a nice backplane)

> MB: SuperMicro Super 370DE6 (SCSI) $600
Should be fine, since it isn't the i840 chipset.

If you want hardware OpenGL support, use the GeForce DDR cards (check on
variations like MX before purchasing). Also to note, multimonitor
support removes the ability to use hardware accel OpenGL. You might
consider a commercial X server to go with Oxygen VX-1, but that'd add to
cost.

> MON: .25dp 19" Monitor $400
21" isn't that much more these days. A large monitor makes an enormous
sense of difference even on low-end machines.

The SC-850W already has two racks for 10 slots. Save that money by
getting the better case to start with.

> RAID: AMI 4Ch RAID Controller $2000
> RAID: 4x75GB Seagate ST173404LCV $4000
Most of these drives are too wide to fit into the SuperMicro hot swap
bays. You'll be limited to 36 Gbyte, but the Seagates work very well
there. If you ignore hot swap bays, you can use the larger drives, but
then they'll also take twice the thickness. Consider redundancy and
flexibility...8 times 36 would nearly fill the bays, but would probably
be better in the end, especially for raid (more can fail, but each
individual failure will hurt less).

Thanks for all the info. One thing, though: Wouldn't it be better to
split the 10 drives across more than 1 RAID channel? I was hoping to
to have 2 channels and split 4/4, or even 4 channels and split 2/2/2/2.
Isn't this impossible with one cable in, or am I missing something?

Thanks again for the help!

Hey there-

I'm trying to install linux on a box I just built, and the installation
hangs at "Uncompressing Linux..."

Hardware:
EPoX 7KXA Mobo
Athlon 800 mhz cpu
256MB pc-133 ram
seagate 30gb udma hdd
cdrw
fdd
soundblaster pci

O/S:
RH 7 (I've also tried 5.2)

I've booted from floppy and cd, with the same results:
1. Installation menu appears
2. Choose option 1
3. Installation script loads initrd.img
4. Script loads vmlinuz.
5. Script begins to uncompress linux, then hangs ofter about 3 seconds.

Any ideas?

I have had good luck with Sony Vaio PCG-F series systems (F390, F430, F680).
I did a graphical install of Redhat 6.1/6.2 on most or all of them. I
had to tweak the X config to get more than 8 bits of color, but that was
pretty easy. Sound was the only thing that did not come up right out of
the box. I use the box for consulting so I don't care. However, it is
alleged to be quite possible. Used a Linksys Cardbus 10/100 card,
had to download a development driver to get it to autonegotiate right,
didn't use the cb_shim or whatever is recommended though, as that resulted
in no network, just used cb_tulip and tulip_enabler instead, as with the
old driver. Works fine now.

My only gripe with Sony is their warranty policy. As a consultant, I need
the box fixed by the next day. Sony requires me to ship it to Fresno, CA
(or somewhere beginning with an F in CA), and then wait a week. They
won't cross-ship a spare, even with a credit card, no matter how much
I complain. So the next one will be a Dell.

Dear Michael,

You have to compile the following module:

dtc.o
g_NCR5380

You can initialize the module by doing the following:

insmod g_NCR5380 ncr_irq=255 ncr_addr=0x280 dtc_3181e=1

or

modprobe g_NCR5380 dtc_3181e=1 io=0x280 irq=255

There is some documentation with the kernel souces. I had this card in my
Acer133, which somebody had given to me. I got it to work alright. The
system recognised the card, but it did not work with my Microtek scanner.
I removed the card and replaced it with an Adaptec card, which works well.

If you want to do serious number crunching, here's my suggestion. I use a
very similar machine for database work, and it's very spiffy.

SuperMicro 8050 chassis/motherboard: $4000
4 700 MHz Xeons: $2800
1/2 gig RAM: 250
Video: Your choice, PCI: $50

RAID controller: AMI 1300 (3 channel RAID, from scsistuff.com): $200

Your choice of networking and drives.

The 8050 chassis/mobo combo is truly a class act. It also has 10
hot-swappable SCSI bays on it, and you can connect the backplanes to the
RAID card instead of the Adaptec SCSI controller on the motherboard - but
the onboard SCSI is great for running to your backup drive.

Other than the model of the RAID controller, the above configuration is
pretty much exactly what we use, and it's a screaming database machine. We
put about $12,000 into it, and it keeps up with a $25,000 Alpha machine that
a Compaq rep left with us to test, at least for database work.
