Subject: Problem with ne2k-pci driver
Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 13:09:34 +0100
I have two Ethernet cards that need the ne2k-pci driver. I like these
cards because besides the UTP connector, they have a BNC connector so I
can use thin Ethernet and avoid buying a hub. It used to work with a
previous Linux version I had installed (SuSE; some early 2.2.x kernel; I
don't recall if I used a module or the driver built into the kernel).
Now with a new installation (Storm) and a 2.2.16 kernel, I don't get
them to work (as modules).
It is not a hardware problem: the cards work fine in a different machine
with MS-Windows, but not with Linux. The cables work fine too.
The kernel usually recognises the cards, and assigns non-conflicting IRQ
and addresses (PCI!). Sometimes it failes to load the driver, but I can
always manually load the module without error messages.
I can do an ifconfig, and then I can ping my own assigned address.
The problem is, that I cannot reach any outside address.
This is not a config error either, a 3Com card I borrowed works fine
with this configuration.
According to the Ethernet HOWTO, the PCI NE2K cards may have problems
with 32-bit data, so I recompiled the module with the appropriate
setting disabled: this does not help.
Google shows that some work and patches were still being done on the
ne2K drivers for the 2.2.x kernel up to first half of 2000, but none of
the problems I saw reported seem relevant to my case.
Any advise? module or fixed? kernel version, patches?
Note, I have no Internet access on this (my main, own, machine) unless I
get this solved.
Thanx,

Wie heeft er wel eens gewerkt (of heeft hem zelf) met deze scsi kaart van
adaptec.
Alvast bedankt

The system isRH 6.2 with:
I810Gtt-0.2-4.src.rpm - Chipset Driver Module
XFCom i810 display driver
Plug & Pray is disabled.
I've been handed a problem linux system. It's a D815EEA, Intel mboard with a
600MHz Celeron, with no additional PCI cards. Apparently, this box has been
working OKish for the last 6 months but, has recently deveoped a problem
whenever the built in ethernet card is accessed (ie loading the module). It
hangs. Disabling the built-in ethernet and putting in a PCI eepro100 works
fine.
These boxes are for remote location so we desire 100% reliability so we
can't use W2000 ;-)
I've got a feeling that the mboard is not a good choice for Linux and we'll
have to get a new system that works well.
Anyone with similar experiences? Or help?

Likely an Intel or Ensoniq chip - My 1257i uses the Intel IHC (kernel
2.4.1).
Others have suggested sndconfig - probably a good idea.

Is anyone had already testing Director WSD product from

Can you evaluate this product, gives it's price?

Probably. Try the cards one by one to see if they are not broken. If
OK, then put them both in and try booting the kernel with options (like
IRQ, adresses etc.), either on de boot prompt or by listing an
attachment in lilo.conf . There is a BootPrompt HOWTO.

Yeah, too low a resolution. If the Creative site hadn't timed out on

Firewire devices also appear to be an option. Linux drivers are
likely to be a problem with PCI cards. My hope is that external boxes
using standard interfaces will be easier to use with Linux. I'll do
capture in Windows if I have to, but I don't really want to.
Lots of devices seem to be coming on the market, so maybe I'll just
sit back and wait a while for better choices.

The software is Monte Carlo code from CERN called GEANT, idl, custom
analysis methods, ROOT, etc. As far as Alphas go, I would be concerned
that the kernel support and user base are not at the same level as for
x86. On the other hand, I have used Alphas before under Dec Unix, and
they do smoke...

Subject: INTEL 82815 video and INTEL 82801AA AC'97/Crystal WDM Audio Codec
Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 15:26:14 +0000
Dear Folks,
The saga continues, anyway while installing my system Redhat 7.0 on a HP
Vectra 733, I can't get the sound card to work, the windows partition
reports it as a Crystal WDM Audio Codec, but lspci gives:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801AA AC'97 Audio
(rev 02)
amongst other things. It isn't picked up by linux and when I try to
install (via insmod) either, sb.o, cs4232.o or cs46xx.o doesn't work. Any
idea what I should do? It is on IRQ which is the same as `ACPCI IRQ Holder
for PCI IRQ Steering' from the windows side (irq 9).
Also I have problems with the screen driver, which *repeatedly* flickers
whenever logging in or out, while logged in it seems fine, though I haven't
tried it out very much. When returning to the log in screen it flickers
about seven times in a vomit inducing manner. The Video driver is a Intel
82815 Graphics controller, or IRQ 10 (which also has an IRQ Holder on in as
well according to Windows), again any ideas? I have appending the output of
startx 2> output at the bottom in case anyone can see anything in it.
Any help would be appreciated, more so on the screen driver because at
least the lack of sound doesn't make me want to throw up!
Martin Booth.
