Another "dumb" question: Did you compile for _your_ processor? The
default is P3.

Forgive me for following up my own message but big thanks to all of you who
said yes and gave advice.

Miraculously, I still have the manual for it so perhaps I still have a
chance even if I run into difficulties. Essentially though, I want to use
it for printing shell scripts and programs out - I find it far easier to
look at programs on fanfold paper and it just doesn't seem right somehow to
have them beautifully laser or bj printed. I have both bj and lj on my
network so either would have been an option. Once I get the printer
brought down from home, I'll start hacking.

For anyone interested, this will be the fourth different machine and OS I'll
have used on this printer. First a BBC Micro back in 1983, then an Amiga
in 1990, then a DOS PC back in 1994 and now Linux. They built printers to
last in those days!!!

Cheers
Rob

Subject: Re: wireless network hub

I have a wireless network that isnt too different from what you're
trying to setup. It sort-of evolved to meet my needs rather than being
all installed in one go, but here's what I have:

Linksys BEFSR41 router attached to DSL modem, Linux server & windows
machine. (The Linksys handles firewall & PPPoE for me.)

Linux server has a webgear aviator 2.4 pcmcia wireless network card (now
obsolete but see www.webgear.com for current replacement model). The
linux server is configured as a router/gateway for the wireless network.
It also serves samba & NFS.

More avaiator 2.4 wireless cards in 2 laptops and a desktop at the other
end of the house, will probably add another desktop with wireless at
some time.

There's no specific wireless hub in this setup, but with routing from
the Linux server you dont need it. I've run this setup for over a year
(although DSL is a recent addition) and it works great.

There are now some faster wireless cards at a reasonable price (D-Link
has one that is 11Mbit compared to the 2Mbit that I'm using), you might
want to look into these too. Samba printing can be a bit slow at 2Mbit!

Hope this helps.

I use LILO _and_ my linux is all beyond 1024 since I downloaded and

If all you want to do is look at text files like scripts and programs,
you can just do:

pr [options] files > /dev/lp0

I would include -f in the options to generate real form feeds.

After a long painful process I finally got Slakware Linux 7.1 installed on
my toshiba 486 laptop. Trying to boot up the first time left me hanging
though. The boot proccess froze at the following line:

PnP: PNP BIOS installation structure at 0xc00f8dc0
Pnp: PNP Bios version 1.00 entry at f0000:adcc,dseq at 0

What in the world does that mean and how do I fix what ever is causing the

Hi,

I am getting a new graphic card but I cannot decide on ati or matrox for
my linux/win9x box

Questions:
1. which card gets better linux support, 2d/3d support?
2. does card w/ dvd acceleration combo offer better dvd performance over
separate graphic + decoder cards?

TIA

It works fine for me...I have a Radeon 32MB DDR running in XF86 4.02 with a

Hi I'm not sure, but your chip might be an Maestro3 chip,
look in the Documentation directory and look for the docs
for the Maestro2 and 2e or ESS soundcard,
If I'm right, your sound card is not supported yet, but a module
exists and has been developped by the guy that already includes
the maestro2 and 2e device drivers. Just look for his homepage
(find it in the docs) and search for maestro3.

The Soundblaster Live works with the Emu10k1 device driver.
regards.

In the case of the described partition layout, yes, because /boot came
before the Windows C: partition and logical partitions would be
required after that. Now, if /boot came AFTER the Windows C: partition,
/boot could be logical, at least if LILO or some third-party boot
loader capable of booting OSs from logical partitions were in the MBR.
/boot could also be logical if you used LOADLIN, as some others have
suggested (but in that case there'd be no point in creating a separate
/boot partition to begin with).

I've never seen those messages before, much less a hang right after
them, but my guess is you're running into a problem with an ISA PnP
device. In a desktop, I'd suggest pulling out all the ISA cards that
aren't absolutely vital and try again, but that's obviously not
practical with a laptop. You could try removing any PCMCIA cards you've
got, but I don't claim that's likely to help. You might try posting a
list of the devices built into the laptop; maybe one will strike
somebody as being iffy, or somebody can suggest LILO boot prompt
options to disable probing for some of them.

Hey,
If you want to do some digital recording on Linux you may want to wait on
that. There is very little software out there for Linux audio-wise, and
those few apps are far from professional. You can't use the Soundblaster's
Environmental audio under Linux yet, but I'm sure that will be implemented
eventually. At this point in Linux's development, you are better off using
Windows or better yet a Mac to record digital audio.

Fix the problem referred to in the next line .. the one you can't see.

Wouldn't hurt to recompile without pnp support too! But how much ram
can a 486 have in it? You do know how much you need for the install,
right?

Turn off serial number disabling. AMDs don't like it.
No .. I don't recall the boot option offhand. Look it up in the
