hi all
it's all about AMR modems again...
I know you got bored of this subject but sorry
I have volcano AMR modem built in mb i810
my linux is 2.2.9-19mdk kernel
I know that some AMR modems can be supported with linux when using a
linmodem driver...
but most of them are PCtel chibsets not Volcano (vc8279)
the website of Volcano was very hard to find using google or any other
searching engines
but searching the newsgroups made it
www.viewcom.com.hk
anyway I'd like to say that visiting this website was of no use at all !
no important information do exists nor even the support !!
I e-mailed them a weak ago and still waiting :(
so plz I'd like to hear from anyone here has previous experience with
this kind of modem or knows any way (like DOS emulation, etc...) to
make it work with linux.
also if anyone worked with kernel 2.4 and found out that it has more
hardware support for various modems, plz tell me
thanx in advance
and sorry about this very long massege

BYE
Hossam

Hi Tor and All.
Are you sure that your modem is "not" a Winmodem.
If it is, there is a good chance that it won't work with Linux. I have
heard that there are some Linux drivers for some of them.

Has this modem ever worked with Linux?

Can you access your modem from minicom? If you can,
that's a good start. Sometimes the default of minicom and
maybe a ppp dialer might be /dev/modem, which has a default
link to one of the com ports like maybe /dev/ttyS0. Make
sure that you have selected the correct com port. You don't
have to use /dev/modem. You could just use /dev/your_com_port
Sometimes modems need a special initialization string. That
can be setup as a modem default or as a seperate selectable profile.
There is usually a factory default setting that can be tried.

                                                        Mike

I think this is the best way.

1.Mount the new partition say on /mnt/newsys

2.Execute the following

$ tar cf - /bin | tar xf - -C /mnt/newsys

3.Do this for each of the directories in / i.e /bin, /etc, /home, /usr,
/sbin, /var, ...anything else I've left out. Don't do this for the /mnt
partition on which the new disk is mounted. It will fail.

4.Of course, if you have multiple partitions, you can mount them under
/mnt/newsys as required.

First of all, APM now works after I plugged in a PS/2 mouse (I had lent
the mouse to a friend). Still can't see the relationship between mice
and APM, but hey, I won't complain lest it stop working again.

Second, the beeps appear to be normal. Three beeps on suspend, one on
resume. I never noticed them with my previous mobo probably because I
had the PC speaker unplugged (or maybe because the old mobo didn't
beep, but it has since passed on, so we'll never know..)

Subject: (Linux Newbie) Need help with configuring Trident Blade 3D/MVP4 (63) for
Xfree86 4.0.2
Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2001 18:14:48 +1000

Hi

I've been trying to install Linux Mandrake 7.2, and I'm having a problem
configuring the onboard video for my Compaq (argh) 7400.

I've done a little research into the motherboard itself, and I've found it
is using a VIA chipset with an onboard Trident Blade 3D setup (that uses 8
meg of System RAM), but it is apparently not a Trident Blade 3D that is
compatible with the generic Blade 3D version of Xfree86 4.0.2 - I searched
around on deja.com for some answers, and found some that hovered around
rewriting some kind of configuration (something to do with framebuffers),
but they were fairly obscure...I can deal with technical answers, but I
would need a starting point :-)

I don't have any problem booting straight into the terminal, and it does
actually load X pretty flawlessly, but as soon as it gets past the initial
splash screen for Gnome, the display totally corrupts (ie turns into a
random mass of pixels). Sometimes there is enough of the display left to
attempt to make some use of the 'taskbar' to try and log out, but it makes
no difference because after a short while the video locks up altogether.
This happens at every resolution, including 640 x 480 x 256.

If this is any help, the initial Xconfig detects the card as a Trident
Cyberblade and attempts to set it up for a generic Cyberblade, but the test
screen doesn't work for that in 1024 x 768, whereas it does for the Trident
Blade generic. Also, version 7.0 of Mandrake (ie the version of X bundled
with it I presume) ran with the card, but wouldn't allow a resolution of
more than 640 x 480 or a colour depth of more than 8 bit. I believe the
problem there from what I saw was that it couldn't tell that the card draws
from the physical RAM, and just set it up as if it had nothing extra. I
must stress that in the Xconfig (for Xfree 4.0.2 with Mandrake 7.2) *tests*,
the card displays fine at every resolution up to 1024 x 768 with 32-bit
colour depth.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated...detailed answers would be
received with overwhelming gratitude :-Ž

Thanks in advance,

Shaun.

Among other things yes. Each basic pc would be used for a different
purpose using specific pci cards installed on them, with what ever is
connected to the card.
I would want to be able to use the serial ports aswell.
Thanks for the tips!

I also have an Acer TravelMate 521TE running RedHat7.0, I didn't use the
modem yet, but as soon as I try I'll let you know.
Can you use your adio card (ALI M5451 PCI South Bridge Audio)?
sndconfig detect it but it does not support it, and with manual
configuration as "Acer audio card" or "Sound Blaster" it does not
work...
Thanks, Fabio

IMHO DON'T do this. It destroys your original kernel - the one that's
working.

Add a new section to to lilo.conf to boot /boot/bzImage.

Hi,

Danke.

Hey guys,

I have realized a little bit too late that this is not a german forum.
Let me translate my last message:

I've got a Lucent Winmodem in an IBM Thinkpad 570.
Normally winmodem don't work under Linux, but especially for this modem from
Lucent there exists an driver.

Can anybody help me, I can't get it working.
Would be nice to receive a detailled tutorial or some assistance during the
installation process.

I use SUSE Linux 7.0, Kernel 2.2.16.

Best regards,

Andreas

Hello!

There's an open-source driver set for the Live! series of cards that can be
found on http://opensource.creative.com
These drivers support most of the functions of the SB Live! cards,
including the Live! cradle, and game-ports if you have them. These are
updated almost daily (if you want to go bleedin' edge).
There's a couple of other Live! drivers for Linux as well, but none of them
(not even the commercial offering) have so many functions.
Creative are working on their own drivers for Linux, and have promised to
release a driver set with software comparable to their software for
Windows, but they haven't set a release date yet.

Some further information, I found a link to susie about HP Vectras that

useful for someone:

But support for the intel i815 is best obtained from:
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel815/linuxsoftware.htm
and if you follow their advice you obtain flicker free xdm switches
(which is
most refreshing :-))

I tried your approach to the sound card, only
## modules.conf
alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio
##
worked, but in respect that the module loaded, but then the sound system

refused to work, any ideas?

No, not as good. Tar Handles File Acess|Modify times not good,
Tar has got problems with special Files (dev, proc, pipes, fifo, etc)

Better is to use find & cpio like this:
find / -not -ipath '/mnt/newsys' | cpio -pdmv /mnt/newsys

"-not -ipath '/mnt/newsys'" makes sure not to copy it's destination.
