I have a ess modem. Linux doesn't auto-recognize it but when I configure it
in kppp it finds it and says the the modem is busy.
why? how? etc.

First thing to check there is your modem initialisation string.
Standard is ATZ, but there are other possibilities; see if your
modem manual or the modem manufacturer's web page says anything
about the matter. Most modems have a command you can send them
that causes them to reset themselves -- usually called the
"init string". Make sure your dialing app is sending the
correct init string for your modem.

Some internet service providers drop inactive connections
after a certain amount of time. Try setting up a cron
job to do something every couple of minutes, maybe something
useful like a POP3 mail check or if there's nothing you
really need to do like that, you could do a dummy ping
out of a cron job every couple of minutes; make sure you
specify a count so it doesn't keep pinging indefinitely:
ping -c 3 www.fsf.org

Whatever the default max count is, it has always seemed so frequent
to me that the person who decided it must be obsessive-compulsive.
Once a month would be *plenty* often enough, IMO.

Do you mean it doesn't actually work (i.e. you get an error message) or you
can't hear anything? In the latter case, try running 'aumix' - you may just
have all the volume settings set to zero (which is the default). Make sure that
the 'master' volume and 'pcm' volumes are sane.

If you are getting an error message, it's possible that the installer has
chosen the wrong driver. The sound card is probably an Analog Devices AD1881
AC'97 CODEC, which has ALSA drivers. You should try installing the alsa drivers
and use the via686a driver to see if this helps (note that your Mandrake 7.0
may already have ALSA installed).

Every twenty reboots would be about "every ten years". Where's the
obsessive-compulsive nature in this???

Hi,
I have again a problem with the ethernet connexion of my computer under Kernel 2.4.3
(not with the
kernel 2.2.17, with this kernel everything works well).
My computer is a Dell Latitude with Xircom (Ethernet + Modem) PCMCIA card.
Since this morning, i success to detect my pcmcia card (thank you David Hints) but now
when i try to
make a ping to an other computer of my network, i get a "Destination Host Unreachable"
error.

I have verified the different loadded modules, as you can see everything seems to be
Ok :

Can somebody help me ?
Thank you in advance.

PS :
I have the mandrake 8 linux distribution. When i run the harddrake tool, it detects
the modem of the

You turn your computer off too frequently.

You can set a time interval instead of a mount count. I have no idea
if e2fsck honors that. The default seems to be 6 months.

It has 2 sets of Pri/Sec ide ports, one of which has a RAID chip.
Download the manual for the m/b, or if you can't get one, then read the
Asus manual for the A7V133-RAID. Almost the same.
RAID means 2 or more identical hdd's that act as one hdd in one of 2 or 3
modes:
1. backup, or 2. split i/o between drives (stripping), or 3. both modes.
No insult intended, but if you don't know what RAID is then you probably
don't need it. Its an aconym for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Dasd
(direct access storage devices - hdd to you) or Disks if you prefer.

I don't know if RH7.1 supports RAID but it will run on the Abit or Asus
RAID boards that have 2 sets of dual ide ports, one of which is non-RAID.

I have the Asus A7V133-RAID bought at a computer show. I am not using
RAID (i have only 1 hdd ... RAID requires 2 or more) but the price was
the same as the non-RAID A7V133. I am running Win98 and RH 7.0 on it.

Don't pay extra for RAID if you aren't going to use it. RAID looks to the
software like SCSI and not like an ide drive.

> Please let me know about your feelings on this mother board good and bad
> and your concerns!!

Expensive. The Asus may be a better buy. Epox may be even a better buy
than either Abit or Asus. Epox is hard to find and I never buy a m/b by mail order.

Abit is good if you need an ISA slot.

Hope this helps and makes sense. To summarize:
Don't pay more for RAID as you probably don't need it.

Yes I agree, check cooling and check the PSU. Disks normally run for years
so you have a problem somewhere, and I suspect it is hardware or heat!

Those publications are very current. You'll soon discover that Linux
moves very slowly. If it covers kernel 2.4.xx, then its as current as
you can get.

SusePro7.1 comes with 7 cds and if you install all the apps, it will
take about 6 gigabyte on your harddrive. Just install the ones that
you think you need. You can always add more apps later. Suse has a
reputation for being one of the easiest to setup as oppose to the
other linux flavor, but the others are catching up fast.

I have the same modem on my 8100. I'm almost sure it's hardware as it
occupies a pc slot. Mandrake detected it as conexant but didn't have a
driver for it. It's not something urgent for me as I'm using cable to
get on the net. Do a search, someone might have a driver for it
already. As far as modems, stay away from WINMODEM. 3com (formerly
USR) works fine.
We might both need the Intel chip driver 810 also. I found about 5
unknown devices and I think they're for the intel chipset. Intel site
don't have anything for linux. P4 is fairly new and it might take a
good while before we start seeing any driver for it.
I'm in the process of downloading the Redhat7.1 iso. I'll give that a
try also. I haven't decided which flavor I'll stay with yet. I've been
away from linux for a couple years. The last one I had was redhat5.2.
Visit the dellTalk forum, you might get a few pointers there also,
although it's not heavily populated.
good luck
