Hi,

Does anyone have any experience using Linux as a border router running BGP
(Zebra software)?

I'm looking for opinions on the best / most stable hardware to use, i.e.:
Motherboard, Network card, etc.

Thanks,
Chris

have you set cables and hdd/cd-rom-jumpers up right?

The first hint people always give with this kind of smp trouble:

'add noapic to the lilo arguments'.

So that's my hint :-)

I was able to install and run the system fairly stable till I
had large disk accesses that froze the system, so I think the
cables were on correctly.

Thanks,

Mine looks like this:

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            8 Apr 28 15:38 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/sr1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            8 Apr 28 15:38 /dev/cdrom1 -> /dev/sr0

brw-r----- 1 root disk 11, 0 Jan 19 09:36 /dev/sr0
brw-r----- 1 root disk 11, 1 Jan 19 09:36 /dev/sr1

so I gather you should look at this, look at your own device-files, see
the difference, use 'man mknod' to determine what to do about it, and
then it'll work.

Good luck,
Jurriaan

I have an 810 mobo with onboard sound and video. For the video I
recompiled X 3.3.6 svga server incorporating the 810 driver (it's not
in the default binaries). The onboard sound works fine with alsa
0.5.10b driver - it's the intel8x0 module.

This is under kernel 2.2.15.

I red somewhere in a newsgroup that the chipset KT133a has a bug concerning
the IDE controllers. Usually this bug only appears when a large amount of
datas flow from one IDE port to the other. Try to put your harddrive to the
promise controller, maybe it works.

Thanks for responding so quickly...

Mine looks like the following...

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            3 May  3 09:06 /dev/cdrom -> hdc
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            4 May  3 09:06 /dev/cdrom1 -> scd0

brw-rw---- 1 root disk 11, 0 May 5 1998 /dev/scd0

As far as I can tell, it's pretty much set up the way it needs to be, and
similar to yours. Any other thoughts?

I've never owned anything other than a logitech, and never had linux refuse
to use any of them. had some slight glitches with USB in getting my latest
(USB mouseman optical wheelmouse) going, but...

my linux box has known the following:
original logitech 3 btn (yes, the original serial)
slightly newer 3 btn serial
2btn wheen ps/2 with the wheel acting as a 3rd button
same thing, only optical :)

though in retrospect, this could be just a troll.

Thanks in advance for your insights

I have a wonderful Mandrake 8.0 system... but am trying to deal with IRQ
problems on another Red Hat 7.1 setup. I seem to have USB, Promise PCI
card with second hard disk, and eth0 card on IRQ 11. KDE doesn't seem to
provide a workable way to change interrupts. I also successfully
installed kernel 2.4.3-1.i686 rpm to match my Mandrake kernel setup.
Still no success.

On bootup (either 2.4.2x and 2.4.3x kernels), my hda stalls with IRQ
problems... but eventually boots to desktop. I know I have eth0
intermittent problems due to Netscape stalls, and I can't find my hde
hard disk in fstab (the disk on a PCI Promise card), nor my zip drive
parallel (slaved on parallel printer). Mandrake seems to solve all these
problems.

I keep thinking if I had the correct patches for the kernel, I could get
everything working, but I'm clueless as to how to either change
interrupts in the GUI or to find the correct kernel rpm in kernel.org.

If you have some good HowTo sites or some fairly detailed directions for
me, I would be most appreciative!

This sounds more like a configuration problem in XF86Config. Make sure your
XF86Config is set to at least 640x800 ( I am using 1024X768 ) and Depth 16

I have one at work ( i810e ) that was previously running XFree86 3.3.x,
XFCom810 from Intel, agpgart module from Intel, and 2.2.14 ( up to 2.2.19 )
kernel.

So in addition to the above, make sure:

1) You download and install the agpgart module from Intel ( should be
placed in /lib/modules/2.2.x/misc )

2) Use the XFCom810 from Intel ( I think I remember that you should link
XFCom810 as XFSVGA, so that as far as XF86 is concerned, it is an SVGA
driver. Check the docs for more details )

I have a quite similar configuration, and RedHat 7.0 works just fine. I do not
have the motherboard audio, however. You might try disabling it.

How large are the "large data transfers" you mention? I have certainly copied
~200 MByte files around without problems. I have done this IDE-disk->IDE-disk
and IDE-DISK->SAMBA and SAMBA->IDE-disk (the computer with the SAMBA drive
runs Windows 98se). I use the standard IDE controller (not the Promise thing),
and my 30 GB 7200 RPN ATA-100 drive gets 32 MBytes/sec (hdparm -Tt /dev/hd?).

I have not upgraded to RedHat 7.1. yet, because of keyboard problems on other
RH 7.1 sytems (why oh why did they make the <backspace> key now emit a DELETE
code???).
