I agree. WTF??????? 1ghz athlons around here run just a little under 350
cdn, which is nowhere neat 900us. Things must be insanely priced there.
as for busted parts, most places would allow you to return a borked cpu. if
not, move on and find another site to order from.

Install with the TNT2 card in the machine and slot the GeForce 2 Ultra into the
machine once you have X running well on the TNT2. As the configuration and
driver files are the same, it should work straight off.
That said, you should probably install the NVIDIA drivers (0.9-767) and get
that working with 3D acceleration to start with on the TNT2. That might also
make a difference. The NVIDIA drivers are available from the NVIDIA web site -
you probably should install from tarballs as there won't necessarily be any
RPMs for RH 7.1 at this point.

Thanks - somehow the fact that eth0 was also on irq 3 had slipped past
me.
Any way I can force the modem to another irq? I ask because the new
serial driver won't compile on 2.2.18, but upgrading to 2.4 would
probably mean buying a different video card (long story).

I have Adaptec 2940W with both SCSI and IDE hard disks.
Installation has no problem, and boot up shows aic7xxx module is loaded
but when recompile kernel to add support win2000 NTFS system file, an error
message comes up saying that aic7xxx can not be found. It is weird.
I have tried reinstallation, recompilation about 20 times in total, each
time
the recompilation seems a bit different even though on same pc. But the
error
message on aic7xxx is the same. Now I temporarily use what i have here.
Give up on kernel recompilation.
This may not help any at all.

If your application is better suited to 9 pin serial than parallel, and your
machine is fairly recent, you might want to think about USB serial devices
(particularly keyspan).

I've recently installed a National Instruments PCI-GPIB card for an
instrumentation control project but the driver provided by National
Instruments is exclusive to kernels <2.2.x. I am currently running
kernel 2.4.3 (which I would prefer to keep using).
Does anyone know of any workarounds to make the driver work under newer
kernels or of any drivers available from other vendors? I've tried
compiling the driver under 2.2.12 and doing an "insmod --force nigpib.o"
running 2.4.3 but I get about 10 unresolved symbol errors.
Any help would be appreciated!

I need to be able to simultaneously set any/all of 6 output lines on or off.
ie: 1, 3, and 6 on. 2, 4 and 5 off. then maybe just number 3, etc...
serial would involve more wizardry on the hardware side of things than I'm
comfortable attempting. As for usb, the intended host of this app doesn't
have any usb ports so...

What did the INSTALL script say when you tried on the 2.4.3 box?

Well, by the looks of things, NI hasn't updates its drivers since
version 0.6 last July. I think it's time to hassle them...

The INSTALL script has a conditional that kicks out of the script if the
kernel version is over 2.2.x. Faking it doesn't work since there are some
definitions that are changed/missing in the newer kernel headers. I've
contacted NI about the problem and will hopefully get an answer in a few
days...

Dear All
I am using a 2.2.17 kernel on a Pentium III-based Dell Inspiron 3800
with the Debian Potato (2.2r0) distribution.
Recently, I purchased a Freecom Traveller Light CD-RW with a PCMCIA
interface. I have not been able to mount the device yet. The kernel was
compiled with SCSI emulation as a module, together with the generic SCSI
module sg.
Does anybody know exactly which commands I need to insert, and where, to
be able to mount the beast so that I can use it for CD writing? It is
recognised as /dev/hde (IDE disk drive and IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM drive
mounted as /dev/hda and /dev/hdc respectively).
At boot time, only the disk drive and CD-ROM drive are present. Where
should I place the hde=ide-scsi command, and how should I amend the
PCMCIA database in /etc/pcmcia/config.
Regards

Be warned that software modems (i.e. all winmodems) are much more
sensetive to line noise than real modems. This means slower connection
speeds and more frequent disconnects (in addition to sucking some CPU

a plextor plexwriter is a kick booty cdrw drive for linux. you just have to
reconfigure the kernel to get it to work (unless you're running mandrake 7.2
or higher [i don't know about other distros, but it didn't work in red hat
7.1, so i had to hack the kernel])
