linux supports fat file systems. you might have to put the support into
the kernel

Yes, Nvidia's drivers have this "feature".

Depend on the driver for framebuffer. Add something like
append = "video=riva:off, vesa:off" to /etc/lilo.conf and rerun lilo.

All,

Locally, I have a couple computer stores (and even the office supply
stores) that carry IEEE1394 FireWire boards. There is a DLink board
with three ports and a Maxtor board with 2 ports. They both profess to
support 1394a. My understanding is that RH 7.1 and Caldera 3.1 beta
(2.4.X kernel) should have support for this standard.

Has anyone gotten either of these boards working under either RH 7.1 or
Caldera 3.1 eDsktop?

I want to purchase a board and an IOMega FireZip drive (the drive is
another whole problem).

Please respond to the group and to:

I will probably multiboot with Windoze Me but maybe not. Linux is the
future of Operating Systems.

Thanks ahead of time,

I think the suspend function on most laptops is dependent on the
hardware. For me, a large assortment of kernels, all compiled with APM
support, worked with a Thinkpad 380D and a Thinkpad 600X. The command
is "apm -s", but most laptops automagically invoke suspend-to-RAM when
the lid is closed.

Thinkpads have a number of options as to what they do when an APM
suspend event occurs; "tpctl" can control them. Finally, if you give
more information about your hardware, someone will probably be able to
help you out more.

If you have DOS around, grab 3C5X9CFG.EXE and take the silly things out
of Plug-N-Pray mode.

If you look at the stuff in the 3c509.c file, you'll see that the only
parameter the 3c509 module takes is an irq= parameter. io= is not a
valid parameter for 3c509, as the error message tells you.

If the IRQ assignments for the devices stay stable, or you can fix them
using 3C5X9CFG.EXE, then passing the irq= options to modprobe in the
correct order should allow you to control which device becomes eth1 and
which becomes eth0.

My German isn't too good, so I will answer in English.

If your intent is to run Windows and Linux on the same disk (platte?),
you may have to get a second disk. My Linux-Mandrake installation uses a
30 Gbyte disk with 7 Gbyte allocated to Linux.

df
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda4 7.0G 1.7G 5.0G 25% /
/dev/hda1 3.8G 1.3G 2.6G 33% /mnt/win_c
/dev/hda5 4.4G 390M 4.0G 9% /mnt/win_d
/dev/hda6 4.4G 24k 4.4G 0% /mnt/win_e
/dev/hda7 4.4G 128M 4.3G 3% /mnt/win_f
/dev/hda8 4.4G 12M 4.4G 0% /mnt/win_g

This means the Linux partition is 25 percent full. And it is almost all
system software. Your 10 Gbyte disk size (plattengrosse) may be to small
for a dual boot system.

I hope this helps.

at LILO you may want to enter linux 3 to put you always in console mode

startx

and see what kind of messages appear. You may want to post them here,
plus the other messages for those instances when startx comes up correctly.

Subject: Compiling of hpoj-0.7 printer package fails
Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 05:30:09 -0000

Hi,

I would like to install the hpoj-0.7 printer package on my RH7.1 box
  (2.4.2 kernel).

Now make fails with strange errors. Checking the INSTALL script
downloaded
with the package I find the following (see bug section):

  -------------
If during "make" or "make install" you get an error trying to create a
symbolic link, then you are probably compiling and/or installing on a
file system that doesn't support symlinks, such as MSDOS or VFAT. Try
compiling and installing on a native Linux ext2 filesystem.

FEATURE: The kernel drivers require at least kernel 2.2, due to the
  "parport" functionality they rely on.

BUG: The kernel drivers currently fail to compile under kernel 2.4.
They also do not work with SMP (any kernel version). These two problems
  are being worked on.
  --------------

The same INSTALL file from http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/hpoj/INSTALL does
  not have this BUG section.

Question: Does anybody know, if this package may be compiled under the
2.4.2 kernel? If not, are there any workarounds?

  Thanks for your help.

  Heinz

Hey Brian,

>From what I understand, the assignment of which NIC gets eth0 and which one
gets eth1 has to do with their placement on the PCI bus. For example, in
most cases, from the top down in your computer, the first NIC in PCI slot 0
would get eth0, the next eth1, etc. Now, it would seem that since your
second NIC is an ISA card, it is looked at last every time, meaning it will
always be assigned as eth1. And, since your built in NIC is most likely
sitting on the PCI bus, and isn't actually in a slot, it is probably always
going to be seen as the first device on the PCI bus. One thing you may try
is to put in a 2nd NIC (a PCI one) and see whether choosing the different
available slots you have left allows that card to be recognized as eth0. Of
course, the last option would be to disable the built in NIC, and use 2 NIC
cards that you can put in whichever position suits you (but I'm sure you've
already considered that...).

Good Luck!
