The ServerWorks chipsets are, indeed, very expensive. If you only
need two-way processing, then you would probably be better served with a
dual P3 using a less expensive chipset. Several of the servers I run are
dual P3's on Asus P3V4X-D boards, and they are very fast and stable.
The ServerWorks-based board that I have (an HE, not an LE) is also
perfectly stable, but unless you need 4 processors, > 4gigs of ram,
and/or 64-bit PCI slots, the ServerWorks chipset is (IMHO) overkill.

I'am running SuSE linux 7.1 on my local fileserver, with a complex
RT100TX pci lan adapter (100mbit/s).
now i've got the problem, the i get only about 10 mbit/s betwenn
server and windows client. of cause, the client's got a 100mbit/s
card, too, and they are connected by an 10/100mbit/s switch, which
detects them as 100mbit/s cards, too.
between 2 windows clients, i get at least 30mbit/s.
now my real problem, if you have another solution, i would be glad if
you would post it, too.
i want to try installing complex driver, but they only provide the
c-source. how do i compile it, and what do i do with the created .o
file?
thanks for all answers,

Subject: VIA south bridge bug question

I recently installed Mandrake 8.0 and ran into the now famous VIA south
bridge bug.
I had noticed my system slowing down under 8.0, so I did some reading about
how Mandrake cripples the 2.4.3 kernel by turning off UDMA on install if it
detects "ANY" VIA chipset. I have also found a lot of info in this forum
about what chips are affected, but things are still a little unclear.
I am trying to confirm that the only chip that is affected is the VT82C656B.
I have a SOYO 6VBA-133 mobo. It has a VIA Apollo Pro133 chipset. $ cat
/proc/pci reports the following:
Host Bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C693A/694x [Apollo PRO133x]
PCI Bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C598/694x [Apollo MVP3/Pro133x AGP]
ISA Bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C596ISA [Mobile South]
Am I correct in thinking that I do not have the said buggy chip?
I would like to try running the 2.4.4 linus kernel w/ udma on but want to
make sure that this chipset won't cause the data corruption problems
reported by MandrakeSoft and others.

I'm a big fan of Sobell's "A Practical Guide to Linux" as a complement to

Does anyone know where I can get figures of what is a reasonable "real life"
performance of my hard disk. I've been messing with hdparm and got it up to
around 16 MB/sec. Is this good or can I boost its perfomance even further?
It's a Fujitsu MPG3102AT E (whatever that means).
Also any idea of what is a reasonable real life data transfer rate over a
10baseT LAN? How would I measure this, any tweaks anyone could recommend?
Thanks in advance,

Anyone know where I can get the vt82cxxxx driver? I think the latest
version might be 3.21. I need this one to support my vt82c686b. The older
version 2.something included with 2.4.2 kernel does not like the vt82c686b
chip.
Also, I am a newbie (sort of), but competant. Can someone tell me how to
add this driver? I have seen older versions available as a .c file. Does
this mean I can just create a new kernel source directory, replace the old
via82cxxxx.c file, and replace it with the new one, and then re-compile the
kernel?

Okay, I found it. It was on the Linux kernel mailing list. But can anyone
still guide me through the installation of this driver? And also, if anyone
has any experience using this please let me know.
And one other problem... how do I access my floppy drive in RedHat 7.1
rescue mode? There is a /mnt/floppy thing, and also a /dev/fd0 thing, but
they don't seem to work. I need my floppy to get at the new driver I
downloaded. I also have another problem, and that is accessing man pages in
rescue mode. It gives me an error message and says that no man page exists,
but I know there are there. Are they all stashed in a directory somewhere?

My trusty old Laserjet III has finally died after years of faithful

model. I'm on a very tight budget so can any of you wonderful fellows
recommend a cheap Linux compatible laser printer. I imagine even the

but it must be able to print full page graphics and be compatible with

I have an ancient Diamond Stealth VRAM video card (ISA, DCS 2824-0 Clock,

with an even older Mitsubishi XC-1429C monitor (this is a VGA 0.28 dot pitch
monitor; not sure if it's multiscanning). I'm trying to install this on
RedHat v.7.1 with little success in activating the proper video for the X
windows system. I can designate the proper adapter but 1) there is no
monitor matching mine and I don't have the manual for it so I can't manually
assign the refresh rates, etc, 2) when Generic is chosen (no matter which
generic monitor), only the bottom-left portion of the video shows upon
activation of X, 3) it's very odd that the Standard 640x480 256 colors
doesn't work because I'm positive that's what's shown when Linux is booting
up (the full screen dialog where you select the OS to boot; LILO i believe
it's called).
Is there a site that archives old hardware settings out there in cyber-space
anywhere? What could explain only a portion of the video showing up? Thx
for any assistance.

Does anybody have and use the hawking 005605-00 pcmcia ethernet/56K

I've just heard that "combination" cards can be a pain sometimes. But
I heard this about the dreaded "windoze" system a while back. Not
sure how linux handles these types of cards.
What really attracted me was the NIC / modem for just over a hundred
bucks and i'm a natural skeptic so if people have had problems i wanna
know about it.
Any help is apreciated.

You might want to look around on the XFree86 site for some S3-driver
specific documentation, some of those old S3-based cards needed some
additional configuration that the RH installer might not have handled.
If you can see anything at all on the screen (and it isn't obviously an
incorrect refresh rate) the monitor is not the problem. And you are
always safe if you choose generic VGA monitor, because literally every
VGA monitor ever made can handle 640x480x60hz.

I've experienced the slow degeneration and ultimate destruction of a
filesystem on one of my computers due to the interactions between the
linux VIA driver and the VIA 596B ide controller. It was not a fun
thing. But I think that the worst problems have been ironed out now, and you
should be able to run that board with linux without any need for concern.

You really should upgrade the entire kernel, not just the VIA-whatever
driver. 2.4.5 is out now, and IMHO, it works better than 2.4.2 ever
did.
The reason you can't enable DMA in your RedHat 7.1 stock install is that
there were hardware problems with the VIA686, and kernels prior to 2.4.4
had a habit of triggering these hardware problems frequently. RedHat's
engineers put a fix into the stock RedHat kernel that solves the problem
by turning off DMA when it detects a VIA686 chipset.

Did you boot a rescue system, or did you boot your normal system in
single-user mode? Rescue systems very rarely have any documentation
attached; the space for the rescue system is almost always filled with
utilities. Tom's RootBoot is an exception to this rule. If you booted
your system in single-user mode, only the / partition is mounted (and
mounted read-only!) If you have a /usr partition, your man pages are in
/usr/share/man/ , and you will need to mount that partition manually to
make use of these pages.
