You're the second person to avoid this one. The thing is that the hardware

It's possible of course!

You will need a newer 2.2 kernel (2.2.19). You'll need to compile
the kernel with USB support.

Unfortunately, I have only done a USB modem device configuration...
so I can't address the specifics of using a USB mouse.

Take a look at http://www.linux-usb.org
Some of the information there is a little old, but most of it should
get you going in the right direction.

It is probably a lot simpler problem is to get a cheap 386/486/pentium, 2 lan
cards, cross over cable (or normal cables if you have a hub/switch), video
card, and make her machine an X server to your machine, either with minimal
disk, or by booting from floppy and having the root partition NFS mounted.
This is because PC hardware tends to assume one keyboard/mouse, unless you go
to USB. Here is one link:

        http://www.menet.umn.edu/~kaszeta/unix/xterminal/index.html

One advantage of networking, is you can separate the machines up to something
like 100 meters.

I'm not familiar with linux.org's hardware guide. Perhaps they're
rating compatibility and not quality.

I used to work in a whitebox computer store, and we used LG
electronics cdrom drives. This before CDRW drives were cheap enough
to be popular, so I don't know about them, but the CD drives we used
were decent quality: not the best on the market, but not the worst,
and pretty good considering the price.

Just my 2 cents.

(video,audio,ethernet ...)
RH 7.0 had kernel 2.2.x, RH 7.1 has 2.4.2 which support 815 chipset without

Hi, everyone!

After lurking for a while (and learning some, I hope), I have a
question: I am looking for a new mobo. It _has_ to have 2 NICs and two
serials on board. Video would be nice - don't care which, since it will
be CUI-only machine. Far more important is serial-port access to BIOS
settings. USB does not figure anywhere.
So, does anyone have such a baby? I bought Tyan S2510NG (Thunder LE),
but I'm not too happy with it - the one that still works locks up, the
other 4 (!!!) either didn't work right off the bat, or soon afterwards.
One stopped on the first boot after install...

Thanks for any info!

Dear all,

I would like to ask if there is Linux driver other then the one supplied by
Dell. As that is for kernel-2.2.16 and RH7.0 only. I would like to have it
installed on a SuSE 7.1 box.

Thankx in advance

I have just installed Quake2 onto suse7.1 following the How-To guide
from www.linuxgames.com. I have got the software renderer working,
SVGALIB, but I want to run quake2 in GL mode.
When installing suse I selected my graphics board and the 3D option
and I know the GL screensavers work.
How do I get quake2 to recognise the already installed GL rage 128
drivers?
The How-To guide from www.linuxgames.com says you need to install
glide (voodoo boards)then use either MesaGL or the openGLX renderer.
No use.
How do I get it to use the already installed GL renderer?

You could pick up an old 486 or Pentium and run it as an X
terminal off the main machine.

I have MSI Turbo motherboard with VIA KT7 chipset with sound onboard. I
have RH 7.1, the sound works, but there are scratch noises when playing a
.wav or .mp3 in the beginning. It is also annoying, that with many .mp3-s,
syncronization seems to fail, the resync option of mpg123 doesn`t help,
xmms can be paused for 2 seconds then it`s all right. The AC97 driver and the
via82cxxx driver as well seems uptodate, but what else can be the problem
than not having the best driver for the device ?

Four other IDE-drives on the onboard controllers

I would apreciate any comments/suggestions.

Subject: Alternate Methods of Creating 1:1 CD Copy??
Date: 18 Jun 2001 05:17:56 -0700

Is there any other way to go about creating an exact duplicate of a CD
other than using:

dd if=/dev/scd0 of=cdimage

For some reason, using dd writes an initial ~1.6MB image and then hangs
endlessly. I have to do a system halt and reboot to get rid of the process.
Kill -9 <process ID> does nothing. I only have this problem with a couple
of CD's, so I'm going to assume the problem does not involve dd.

I was thinking of maybe mounting the CD and doing a

cp -a /mnt/cdrom /tmp/foo
cd /tmp/foo
mkisofs -r -J -o /tmp/cdimage ./*
cdrecord -v speed=2 device=0,0,0 /tmp/cdimage

I suspect that this approach is too elementary, and I'm not getting all the
info from the original CD that I should be getting.

Are there alternate approaches I might try?

Subject: DeviceDrivers in kernels 2.2 -> 2.4 ?? help please
Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 13:20:43 +0100

Sorry for this but I am v.poor in C and hacking....I would really
appreciate any assistance.

My problem is trying to upgrade a few little DeviceDrivers from Kernel
2.2 to 2.4.

I managed one of them ok which was nice, but the second uses
'wake_up_interruptibles'
and dies horribly whatever I try.

Not wanting to burden you with the whole thing could anyone spare a
moment to indicate
what has changed in the following test-driver - which I think may then
solve my problem.
I think it's from the book and it seems to work fine on 2.2 but not at
all on 2.4
(I don't even understand the compile errors in 2.4!!!!).

I just can't get wake_up_interruptible to accept its argument, though as
far as
I can look at other system stuff in other system drivers it seems
similar ?
It loads and unloads as a module ok but it segfaults (at least) when
accessed.

- so what is different?

please for some help - I am simply not clever enough to get to grips
with all this :-(

thanks in hope
Nick

Should a graphical environment be one of your options, you can use a
frontend to those command line programs like XCDToaster or GToaster

Those perform a 1:1 CD copy on the fly.

Hope this helps
