You could always try the following:
autodetect the drive in the bios and write down the cylinders, heads, and
sectors, then, select a user defined drive type and half the cylinders and
double the heads.

3036cyl, 16hd, 64 sectors = 1.5g
1518cyl, 32hd, 64 sectors = 1.5g
759cyl, 64hd, 64 sectors = 1.5g

FYI, the formula is CYL * HEAD * (SECT * 512)

Thats not true. Its a bit complicated, but I have gotten it to
work rather well on a Compaq Deskpro XL (old machine)

Every version, debian, suse, redhat and slackware could be installed
without any problem.

I have used slackware earlier and am now using Redhat 5.2 exclusively

Of course, the results are varying depending on the exact hardware that
was optioned at time of purchase.

Most definitely! You may need to use isapnptools to get the Sound Blaster
working, but every thing else will work. Happy "Linux'ing"!!

you may need to add:
append "mem=64"
to /etc/lilo.conf or type it in on the lilo prompt or on the loadlin
command-line (depending on how you boot)

check the lilo man pages for the "append" option and its format. I'm a
little rusty right now:)

Subject: 16/32bpp with CL5428 card under Linux?
Date: 23 Dec 1998 22:13:36 GMT

Could someone please help me with the following?

I installed Linux (Slackware 3.5) on a 468DX2/66 with 24MB RAM and a
Vesa Local Bus videocard based on Cirrus Logic's CL-GD5428 chipset.
XFree86 works reasonably well, but only with a colour depth of just 8bpp,
while the card is supposed to be able to do 16 and 32bpp as well. The
reason for this is explained in the README.cirrus file that came with
XFree86: 16/32bpp requires the option "linear" to be set, but since the
card uses a MemBase of <16MB this conflicts with regular memory if the
system has 16MB RAM or more. It seems either my videocard or my
motherboard (or both) doesn't support the A26 line which would make a
MemBase >16MB possible. Trying the MemBase values suggested by said README
cause either a serious lock-up or a hard reset. The README.cirrus (dated
24 May 1997) mentions that this restriction (16/32bpp only when linear
addressing is enabled) might be removed from the SVGA server sometime in
the future, but that this doesn't have high priority since VLB is
obsolete and the problem doesn't affect PCI cards. My question, therefore,
is if this problem has been solved since the writing of this README, or
if anyone has managed to come up with a work-around to enable 16/32bpp
with this card. If not, could anyone suggest a videocard for VLB that
performs equally well as or better than the 5428 *and* is current enough
so that hardware suppliers might still have it in stock? Thank you very
much in advance!

Cheers,
Floris.

Also keep in mind that the integrated SiS video uses system RAM for it's
video ram. If you manually allocated all your system ram to Linux (i.e.
with the append option) you may not have any ram free to run any graphics.
As for using the SVGA server, does "X -probeonly" produce output which
indicates that it recognized the video chipset or the video ram?

I hope these help:

1) Possibly the video is using the same IRQ as the hd controller. If there
is a BIOS option to give the video an IRQ, set it to the opposite of what
it currently is and try booting.

2) The video card could have a physical defect shorting out some pins on
the PCI bus. You could try it in another system and see if the same
problem occurs.

There are several auto mounter daemons which allow you to automatically
change disks for removable drives. I used vold to auto mount and unmount

I am looking for Data Management on Linux with backups/Archive.
So do you have any experiences to use Tape Drive for backup/archive
solution on Linux with Databases?
If possible, please advise your cases.
For the saving time of Backing up, I would like to use the faster
transfer rate Tape Drives.

I will try to use Oracle8 Beta and/or Sybase.
If you have any experiences about other application with Tape Drive,
let me know for my information, please.

Best regards,

Shu
