Windows modem diags will not tell you if it's a Winmodem. If you have
doubts, you should try to access the modem from DOS (go to the Windows
startup menu and choose "command prompt only"). If you can't use a
simple DOS-based comm program to dial out, then you've got a
Winmodem.

I am running pcmcia-cs using xirc2ps_cs.o for
a Xircom CEM2 Creditcard Ethernet Modem card
in a DEC laptop.
The driver starts, eth0 is configured correctly
however it logs a media type of 10base2,
ifport eth0 10baseT seeems to execute ok, but
immediatly afterwould the card reverts back to
10base2.
Is there a setting I can pass in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts
to force it to use 10baseT media setting?
Help greatly appreciated.

the FAT tables are NOT movable files that you can copy or change attributes
they are always forced to be at the beginning of the disk by the format

starting with MS-DOS 6 the command.com, msdos.sys and IO.sys can be in any

the 16 hardware interrupts table are not on the disk, they are in the rom
and the 256 software interrupts are allocated by the OS, usually in the
first 1K of ram

not really. They may be lock files used by some applications to validate
license.
if after moving those files, one or more of your programs stops working,
you will have to reinstall it to create a new lock file.

Hi all,
I've got an IDE CD-RW, Memorex CRW-1622, running on a linux 2.2.0pre4 system.
The drive works beautifully, i've been able to use cdparanoia and xcdroast
without incident. However, i'm having trouble with the CD-RW discs.
When i try to blank them with cdrecord, i get scsi timeout errors or
i/o errors. I have been able to burn audio tracks on the RW disc
but i have trouble erasing the disc or burning long data tracks on the disc.
Any ideas?
thanx,

We don't need commercial virus detectors. If you are
paranoid, or even just mildly concerned, you can use a
free package called "tripwire" which if used properly
can detect all sorts of system intrusions.
Me, I just use a simple script to collect information
about various important files, and it stores that
file in a certain location. It compares the new results
to the old using diff, and if any changes are detected,
the script emails two of my accounts. The script is run
regularly via cron.
Since everyone can make a completely different security
script, I doubt any viruses of note will propagate if
we are careful.

Not necessarily, it depends on the model of monitor. Using Sony model
numbers, the GDM-17E10 can be driven in graphics modes (no text) using a
simple plug adapter, while the GDM-17E20 or GDM-20D10 can be driven in
all modes with yet another simple plug adaptor. Check out
http://www.ultraspec.com for details on these plug adaptors. Older
Sun/Sony monitors, eg. the GDM-1604, GDM-1662, or GDM-1992 series,
require a special video card available from such firms as Photon
(http://www.photonweb.com) or Mirage (http://www.mirage-mmc.com) or
certain industrious persons on the web competent in burning custom video
bios chips.

You should mention the distribution if possible, because
others might have had problems with specific versions of

It doesn't look like you are using NFS, but I had a problem
when I was circularly exporting/mounting directories on a
single system. (Slackware3.6, but the prob was not
distribution specific.) The system would randomly lock up,
but once I removed the circularity the problem disappeared.
You might try disabling things you don't need to see if the
problem goes away. If it only happens when you run X, then
that is a very likely culprit.

It seems like the raid device is an invisable (acts a single disk)

If you need to access VFAT ZIP disks under Linux, e.g. because you use
them to exchange data with other machines such as Win-only PCs or
Solaris boxes, I recommend NOT to mount them as VFAT under Linux but
rather access them with mtools; that's much faster.

Good day,
I've been playing with an AMD-K6-2-350 on an older ASUS P55T2P4 and have
been experiencing sig11s on kernel compiles. What seems to work for me, at
least at some multiplier/bus combos (details posted later) is bumping the
core voltage up to its maximum recommended value of 2.4v. I've tried various
BIOS chipset settings and multiplier/bus settings but have had the most
success with the higher voltage. Why, I can only speculate. Either the chip
really needs more juice than rated, my ASUS board's voltage settings aren't
up to spec, or something in my box (SCSI card and drives?) is sucking up the
current. That's my two cents. Cheers.

Hi all,
My scsi tape has been giving me problems lately and I wonder if anyone

The logs say the following:

And then then tar reports:
tar (grandchild): Cannot write to /dev/st0: Input/output error
tar (grandchild): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
If I try to do anything with the tape it gives an Input/output error.
If I remove and reinsert the tape it will work for a while and then
repeat the above errors.
The setup from dmesg is:
