Hi

I just installed a Western Digital 8.4 GB drive on my Micron machine
with a Micronics M54Hi motherboard as the second drive. This has the
PhoenixBIOS 4.04 which cannot support disks larger than 7.8 GB. There
is a BIOS (v5.05) upgrade available from Micro Firmware but for $79! I
installed the WD EZ-Drive software and it partitioned the drive in 4
with about 2.1 GB per partition. I can see these partitions OK in Win95
(though I do have a spurious E: drive that cannot be accessed).

In Linux (RedHat 4.1 - yes, part of the reason of getting the new drive
was to upgrade to RH5.2), fdisk sees only the first partition of the hard
drive (as /dev/hdb1 with about 2.1GB) with the rest of the drive seen as one
partition with unknown type. If I use linux fdisk to partition the disk
in what I _think_ is the same partitions as EZ-Drive used then Win95 sees
the first partition but cannot read the other three. Repartitioning the
drive with EZ-Drive causes the original problem (i.e. can only see the two
partitions in Linux).

I know Western Digital claims that EZ-Drive does not support Unix but
the Large Disk mini-HOWTO claims that Linux will work with EZ-Drive. I
seem to be almost there. Has anyone got this working or have any
suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

This stuff is over priced. Ordinary CL3 (eg- Hitachi or LGS) works fine.
Even at 133MHz.

Oops. The 2.0.36 kernel has very limited SMP capabilities. The 2.2.x
kernels have what you want but are still in developoment.

This is a crappy monitor in my opinion. Used them at work. Viewsonic and
a few others are significantly better if you can swing the $$.

Try the modeling/graphics conferences for suggestions, then the xfree86
supported hardware guides. RH5.2 ships with 3.3.2

SuSE uses a system V init scheme which doesnt match any of the
documentation that youve read in all the popular 'manuals'.
Go to /sbin/init.d/ to edit (add parameters).
Also, go to the SuSE support site, look at the history because there
is another parameter to modify if your pc card slots still wont load
correctly! (You will hear 2 very quiet short high pitched tones if you
listen hard enough!)

Hi again all,
thanks to lots of advice and a little luck, I have now arrived at the point
where I can get my internal pnp modem to dial, and I hear it happening. I
have been using minicom, and I now have the following problem:

Although it responds to AT commands such as ATDT xxxxxx
th emodem does not send strings back to minicom as far as I can tell.

all of the suggestions tell me to expect OK as a return. even when I tell
it to dial and it does, it doesn't send back anything except a much delayed
(~10 sec) echo of my keystrokes.
Minicom also seems to get a <lf> every few seconds. when I get the modem to
dial my ISP minicom shows apparently random groups of characters, a few
every 10 or so seconds.

The modem appears to handshake ok (I'm not really sure, but it sounds the
same as a successful connect under W95), but once its connected I just get
these seemingly corrupt strings.

Why aren't I getting even the OK messages?

any thoughts or guidance much appreciated.

Current released kernels (e.g. 2.0.36) consider SMP as 'experimental'.

What are the units of the xfer rates? KB?

Software RAID is also still considered experimental. I'd invest in a
couple of RAID controllers in the $150-225 US range. Most likely network
will be the bottleneck. Before investing in a single large machine I'd get
a single CPU, 128 MB mem, 4 drives, RAID controller and two 100bT NIC's and
see where the limits are. You can always add another machine and play with
load balancing and redundancy. Cheaper too.

OK, I found out it uses the "tulip" driver -- it is now showing up in
"ifconfig" but it is not communicating with my network because
Autonegotiation is not setting it to 100mbps. (The indicator light on
the card doesn't light up and pings aren't working.)

I tried reading the driver source code to find a way to help it set
itself to the right speed, but I am not conversant enough in C to figure
it out.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks a lot!

Subject: Re: Software RAID5 questions

If performance is the issue try RAID0 with two stripe sets built on
different IDE's (hda+hdc & hdb+hdd).

If it's data integrity, try a Promise U/33 (~$70US) which gives you 2 more
IDE's. Then you can do RAID5 as hda+hdc+hde+hdg. Support is integrated in
2.0.36 kernel.

Uses 1 IRQ and 1 PCI slot, but you end up with 8 EIDE slots and it's fully
supported in 2.0.36, patchable in 2.0.35. Mine ran about 4% faster than
motherboard EIDE.

Things to consider: data recovery if the volume gets corrupt (can you fsck
a stripe set/raid group?); put the os outside of the RAID volume(s).

video card. Linux installs fine but XFree86 setup for the mouse has
been frustrating.

I've read the FAQ and it suggests to use the MS bus mouse driver but
this does not work. I think I've tried every combination of device

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you are actually using a different XServer than
X3D_Labs... (had the same problem)

Re-Run xf86config..

When it comes time to enter the card, hit 167 (I got that number
burned in my brain from having to reset it several times)

It will ask for Ramdac - hit return (no entry)
same for clock... towards the end of the install, it will give you
what appears to be 4 options for definitions... a little further down
will be the 5th option - X3D_Labs... use it, and DO NOT xprobe...

startx defaults to 8bpp, so for more color, you will need to do
something like
startx --16bpp or
startx --24bpp

keep in mind that depending on your monitor, it will only support
24bit color in 1024x768 mode...

And you will want to change your font size as well if you go hi-res...
it will kill your eyes quickly.

I have an AWE32 that as I type has been playing MIDI continuously for
probably half an hour on 2.2.0-pre7. I personally set my IRQ's with
Creative's CTCM utility in DOS (my machine boots to DOS, runs a batch
file and then uses loadlin to boot into DOS -- much easier than
isapnp). Still, I don't see what your problem could be. Have you tried
using the "playmidi" program with the -a (AWE32) flag? It's really nice
with -r as well, if you like to watch the instrument list as the MIDI
plays!
