Dear Colleagues,

        What a great community!

This is a followup to my message earlier today. In that note
I summarized my attempts to resolve my "lp not configured" situation
in which my RH 5.1 Linux system would not print *most of the time*.
So far, this seems to be a problem with Compaqs, and since it seems
related to BIOS it might be limited to Compaqs, but I'll do this
general posting so others can avoid the frustration.

Shortly after I sent my note I got a response from
Tom Aschenbrener in Dallas that identified the source of the problem
and solution. I've appended his message for those who can't try
my alternative solution.

I foolishly assumed that the PC/printer interface would be most
likely to work correctly if the printer were on during reboots. So I was
carful to have the printer turned on when I rebooted my PC. Tom
found that just the opposite is true and the printer should be turned
*off*.

As Tom suggested, I found that the problem is with the BIOS
setting for the parallel port mode (on Compaqs, at least). Tom's
solution works if you need EPP, ECP, or bidirectional mode. If you
can use "compatible" mode, the printer system works whether the
printer is on or off during reboot.

I got a number of responses to my note. Thanks to you all.
I hope that summarizing back helps repay the community just a bit.

See if there is a flash upgrade available for your modem. It might not hurt
to find out for sure if these ISPs are really still using k56 or if they
have moved to V.90. Some modems can't support both v.90 and k56 at the same
time and need to be flashed to one or the other.

AT+MS=11 should tell your modem not to bother with k56/v90 and just try a
v34 connection.

much better to go with discrete cards.

I just bought the hauppauge card (winCast/tv). it works in both my supermicro
p2 system as well as my FIC k6-2/300 system. HOWEVER, on the FIC system, the
channel tuning is off by a few notches. I have to adjust the fine tuning to
get a clear picture. I'm guessing that it derives timing from the pci bus and
that the FIC is slightly out of spec. so know this going into it ;-)

other than that, its pretty cool having a tv image inside an Xwindow ;-) and
the cpu overhead is low. as an example, I was able to do all this at once:

- browse some websites at isdn speeds (using an ether card) via netscape
- compile a kernel
- watch tv
- burn a cd-r at 2x.

all worked and the cdr was never less than 96% buffer-full.

I'm still surprised all this worked. but hey, its linux - it works ;-)

Yep, the 446Xpro gives really sharp and clear images (I bought one a
few days ago :-). I can really suggest it to anyone who looks for a
high quality 19" monitor.

The main advantage for many maybe is that if you have BNC connectors,
you have two inputs and can connect two computers. However, not many
monitors are designed for that use and therefore the BNC/D-Sub switch
is often deeply buried somewhere in the on-screen menus.

Some monitors do have a separate BNC switch at the front side which
allows easy switching. Of the 19" monitors, these are:
- the Nokia 446Xpro
- the Mitsubishi Diamond Scan 90e and
- the CTX 950EX / 1995UE

I have recently installed RedHat Linux 5.1 and can not get my modem to
work. It is an AcerOpen F34PVS Fax/Modem at 33.6 bps. Under windows
the modem is set up on COM4, IRQ3 and I/O 02E8h-02EFh.

When I issue the command

Any help to correct this problem would be greatly apprecieated.

But as soon as I turn on the computer it happens. Does the celery overheat
in a matter of seconds?? also tried it with a big fan blowing into it and
still the same.

You must have a slightly better celery chip.

Did you do any special bios setting, like changing ram from cas2 to cas3 or
something like that??????

Subject: help me with LINUX
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 12:54:19 +0800

I obtained a complete HP VECTRA UNIX/LINUX 468DX/2 machine dated 1994. It
comes with 19"
HP, get this.....fixed frequency monitor C2746A. There are 5 BNC holes in
the hind (R, G, B, H,V). I was supplied with a monitor cable with only 3 BNC
connectors (R, G, B).

The darn thing is not working!! The screen showed a flash and all frames
shook so fast even Schumacher can't catch up. Then...zzzzzttttooitt...no
more display. It happened every time within 5 sec.

1st round
I tried using a RGB monitor cable w/ 5 connectors bought from IMBI to
connect but no avail.

2nd round
I called HP and no avail too. They only can tell me it is a UNIX machine.
DUH..even Barny can tell me that but I have to take my hats off to them for
their quick responses and positive attitude.

3rd round
If not possible in UNIX, maybe in Win98.
I format the PC by connecting an old SVGA monitor with it. It is ok and now
running in DOS. However, once it goes into Windows, the frames go haywire
again...flickering all over the place. Darn...I cant even play any DOS game
with it.

4th round
I tried to hook up the HP monitor with a normal Win98 machine and only a
short 2 sec display fzzzzz.....and then out..no more display

Pit Stop
It seems the CPU unit wont connect to any monitor and the HP monitor wont
work with any system (I still suspect it is the cable).

5th round
Internet. No new information regarding the CPU unit and the monitor at all.

6th round
The built in VGA card has 14 holes instead of 15 holes.
There is no second hole on the second line. So, I cant hook up a LG monitor
with it and I wont be that stupid to pull out the pin in the LG monitor to
connect into the VGA card.
Last resort, I am thinking of salvaging the CPU unit by adding another VGA
card into it (it has built-in VGA card), hoping it will connect with other
monitors. So, now I need an ISA VGA card...anybody can help? The chances of
working should be high.

Uuu...wait....then, what the hell am I gonna do with the monitor??

**** If only I can make either the CPU or the monitor to work with each
other or with other units.

Regards.

Subject: Re: UMAX Astra 610S Scanner support...
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 05:12:59 GMT

How did you connect your 610s to your SCSI bus? I just bought a UMAX Astra
610s at CompUSA for $40 after rebates. It has a weird SCSI connector on it
-- it looks like a DB25. What do you know, it matches the ISA SCSI card that
came with it, but my system doesn't have any free ISA slots. I do have a
SCSI card already, which I would like to use. However, my SCSI card has, I
think, a SCSI 2 connector. (I don't know much about the different varieties
of SCSI. It has 50 pins in two rows about 3 cm long.)

CompUSA doesn't sell an adapter (nor do any of the other stores around here
(Northern Virginia, USA) that I've checked). One place sells a cable that
would the adapting, but it's about $30 for a 3 foot cable. I just can't see
spending $30 to get the $40 scanner working. If I'm going to spend that kind
of money, I'd rather save for a while more and get a better scanner.

JDR sells SCSI adapters that should do the job, but again, the cost is a
little high ($20 + about $10 shipping).

Any other ideas? How hard/feasible/costly is it to wire up an adapter myself?
Where can I get the pinouts for going from a DB25 to the HDB50? I have 9 days
to get it working before I have to return the scanner and get my money back.

Thanks,
-Jeremy

Abouit the power supply's that shut off when no power is being drawn, that's not the

An Obsidian voodoo-2 has tv out and voodoo is supported in linux
that might work for you, I do not know if the tv out thing is wincrap
specific ?

I had a s3 virge which had a tv out upgrade on but never got it. The
manual said that simultanius tv-out and svga monitor was possible so this
card might work for you.
It's made by viewtop check out their home page.

I would reccomend to get both of the above mentioned as both should give
you tv-out in linux and with a voodoo-2 card you cannot go wrong because
you will be able to play QII in 3d.

I would reccomend not to but diamond as they are expensive, just get a
cheap ass card which uses the same chipset as the diamond you want to get,
performance will be the same which ever one you choose

I've done just that, used the filters (they come pre-cut and bundled)
for my heating ducts and they work splendidly. I have two case fans
blowing INTO the case to cool internal SCSI drives and an overclocked
CPU. Without those filters, I took the case off after a week of running
and everything was coated with a fine, almost talcum powder-like,
residue that was a bitch to get off (maybe says more about the state of
our housekeeping?). I've only put one in front of each case fan (i.e.
haven't covered ALL the holes in the case) and it has cut down on the
dust markedly. It doesn't seem to affect the heat to any measurable
degree either. The carton doesn't provide a list of ingredients, so I
don't even know what chemicals might be contained in the filters.
