How does one uncompact the pcmcia-cs-*.tar.gz file. I try with gzip but no
luck.

Also, how do I change my mouse driver. I have it set to serial but need
ps/2 for it to work.

Hi,

I've a problem with using a scsi cdrom on a adaptec pciAHA2940AU interface
when running X. On loading the AICx7xx driver in a xterm session the system
hangs. When I load the driver in a console session I can access the cdrom
drive without any problems. I'm running kernel 2.0.36 on a PII-233.

What cancause the system to hang when starting X ?

This is bad. Indicates an the IRQ is not set correctly.

The modem will not work in this state.

When you type AT it should appear instantly, and when you press enter,
OK will appear equally quickly.

Possibly the modem is not reporting textual error codes, but the only
other possibility AFAIK is numeric error codes (not no error codes at
all). You should see something when you press enter...

Try ATV1 first and see if that helps.

The modem needs to be instructed to return "verbose" replies.
You WILL need to consult your manual, and instruct the modem to do it
by either the init string you send it, or as a power up default.

Tar /dev/sdb works normally on a rewritable optical disk.

also:

/usr/doc directory is HUGE with RH install.

I moved it under /home somewhere and made a link. This gave me
300+ Mb of space under /usr, where a lot of programs get auto-
matically installed, so it is nice to have some space there.

I don't know anything about the Maxoptix drive, but if it's SCSI, you
don't
need anything... The device will be detected automatically by the SCSI
module.
I use a Philips MO drive (230Mo) without any problem on a RedHat 5.1.

There is a utility called xvidtune with which you can tune the modeline
entries in the X configuration file. These modeline entries are
responsible for the geometry of the display. You can adjust height,
width, vertical and horizontal position.

gunzip pcmcia-cs-*.tar.gz
That gives you pcmcia-cs-*.tar

Then

tar xvf pcmcia-cs-*.tar
which will unarchive it

$ tar zxvf pcmcia-cs-*.tar.gz

This unzips the file and then untar it afterwards. The -z option just
invokes gunzip.

If you just want to uncompress the file use:
$ gunzip file.tar.gz
or
$ gzip -d file.tar.gz

Do you have cdrom support compiled in kernel or in module? If you have it in
kernel see what happens when kernel tries to detect cdrom (you may find 'dmesg'
very useful). If your cdrom is not found try other options to lilo.
If you have mcd support in module try 'io' and 'irq' options to insmod i.e.
insmod mcd io=0x340 irq=11
When you find proper parameters add to /etc/conf.modules line:
options mcd io=xxxx irq=xx

see also /proc/interupts and /proc/ioports

at&f normally *includes* verbose, and is a much better known state to
start the modem from. Flipping single registers from an unknown previous
state is like trying to guess the next number in a combination lock:
it's much safer to start from the beginning....

Hi to all.

I have a problem with my SCSI CD-ROM and CD-R.
Ok the problem is that when i install linux from the cd-rom it crush
sometime on the installation, anyway after few attempts i did install
linux, but then the real problem happens when the LILU boot up it is
detecting my SCSI controller card which is ADAPTEC AIC-7850 PCI, so
after he detect the controller card it is looking for my cd-rom's. So
far so good it is displaying the the cd-r's and then it is crushing no
message error nothing the computer is restarting !!!! ( sometime i get
all over the screen and then restarts ) ??

Some info on my cd-rom:
Sony CD-ROM CDU625
MATSHITA CD-R CW-7502

My connection to the cd-rom's and the jumpers at the back are:
The fires devise on the SCSI cable is my CD-ROM ( test mode OFF,
prevent/allow ON, term OFF, ID select is set to ID5, parity ON )
The second devise on my SCSI cable is my CD-R ( term power ON,
terminator ON, parity ON, ID selector is set to ID6 )

Ps: The strange think is that i was installing about 2 months ago the
same linux on the same computer and i didn't have all these problems !!!

The only hardware i added was a voodoo2, so i did plugt off my voodoo2
and it still was not working.

THANKS to you all for you priceless TIME.

I don't know, except for the office laptop, or briefly when installing RedHat,
I haven't run a 'stable', kernel in at least a year (SMP works so much better
in 2.[12].x kernels for my work machine). However, if somebody actually wants
to create a large swapfile size, I feel it is useful to tell them that they
don't have to go to the trouble of creating lots of dinky 128 meg partitions.

set it up as a Windows for Workgroups dual boot. Just don't install
X-windows or email to start, and install the latest X-windows from the
update site later. This will leave off all the little games and
outdated and unused mail clients that you don't need.

A modest, flexible and well-equipped Linux can easily be stuffed in
under 300 Meg.

Almost all of them will run *JUST FINE* on that. Just be careful partitioning
and enjoy.

"tar xzf filename.tar.gz"

Or better yet, "info tar".

Subject: Netscape 4.5 makes screen blink frequently
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 08:12:42 -0500

I've recently done a clean install of Red Hat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36), along
with an update of all of the XFree86 RPMs (even ones I don't need) to
3.3.3-1 and Netscape to the 4.5 RPM from NS's site. Now, whenever I run
the browser, my screen will sporadically blink, often when I've just
followed a link. This problem only seems to occur when a Netscape
window is open.

I'm using a laptop with a Trident Cyber 9397DVD, and as an earlier post
mentioned, this hasn't been a problem when I've run Windows, so I don't
think it's the hardware.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Also does anyone know whether one of
the two choices for the Cyber 9397 in the XFree86 Setup program is
preferred, or are they identical?

As a final question, does anyone know how to configure an ESS 1968S
(Maestro-2) sound card under Linux?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Win98, because it will ignore anything else you do and over-write the
damn boot block, and change your disk partitions to be FAT based no
matter what. Linux will cooperate with you and let you choose what
partitions for what operating system, and let you set up LILO to
handle both systems.

Windows is a rude, rude, rude product.

This works.

Be ready to do it twice or three times: you may make a typo and do
something rude, but it shouldn't be too painful with the Linux part.
Note that you can also use the Windows "Plug N' Pray" settings to
find appropriate device settings, then simply select the same ones
under Linux with the "isapnp" tools.

I saw the same article, and had the same problem with RH v5.2 claiming the
device was busy...

However, I tried updating the rtl8139.c driver to version 1.4, and now the
card works great (RH v5.2 ships with version 0.99B).

The latest version is available at

Aha, I knew that there was something I had forgotten. The specifications
say that it won't handle any papaer thicker that 90 g/m=B2, is that corre=
ct,
will it in fact handle thicker paper, since making invitation cards etc
you need something about 50% thicker. Will it handle that?

Martin Booth.

P.S. In case of E-mails remover the nopsam.
