Anyone had any success with the
Multiwave Commwave 56 PCI winmodem
?
I am one of those unfortunates caught up in the winmodem problem.
My PC was advertised as having a 56K voice/fax/modem On
inspection the device turned out to call it's self an LT winmodem... I
assumed
that this meant it was a host signal processing device and therefore
unlikely
ever to be supported by the LINUX crowd. So I called the guys at MESH who
had sold me my pc to ask for an exchange (no mention of winmodems in the
product description, buyer beware!).
I was interested to hear that the model I have was a:
Multiwave: Comwave 56 PCI
(Lucent Technologies chipset)
DSP (as opposed to HSP)
I was assured that all the signal procesing was done onboard, that they had
stopped shipping HSP devices.
Has anyone any experience of getting this hardware to work with linux?
Or does the winmodem label mean that the spec is kept a dark secret?
I have found some kind of specification document for this thing:
Multiwave: Comwave 56 PCI
(Lucent Technologies chipset)
DSP (as opposed to HSP)
http://www.multiwave.com/download/manuals/PCILucent/PCIlucent_spec.pdf
If I've managed to decipher this correctly it _does_ do it's DSP on-board
and is
not a standard winmodem CPU vampire.
How do you write a modem driver anyway.....
Thanks for any help,
Simon.

Although it is not HSP, it is HCF, i.e. host-controller. So it's still a
winmodem, just a different flavor of winmodem.

Unless you're a superstar hardware guru, you're probably better off just

I've had similar problems with a AHA1505/AHA1515 card. It seems that
autoprobing doesn't work well for these cards. if you specifiy the I/O
address and interrupt number, it will work.
Most AHa15x5 cards have default settings of I/O=0x340, Int=11.
Test this with 'insmod aha152x aha152x=0x340,11'

Dan,
Are you running RH? Which version? Also, what is the exact
text? I could not find "swapper task" or "not syncing" as
strings
in my RH 5.2 source but I've just setup my environment and may
not
have everything setup correctly yet. If you have these exact
strings
out of RH 5.2 then I will assume I still do not have my
environment
correct yet and will give it another shot.

I couldn't wait for 3.3.3.1 to be released, so I just grabbed the source
RPM for XFree86 3.3.3-11 from rawhide [see below] which includes the
fix to 3DLabs server, rebuilt the RPMs and installed them. Working like
a charm since them.
ftp://rawhide.redhat.com/
ftp://rufus.w3.org/linux/rawhide
1. get the *source* rpm from SRPMS directory. DO NOT GET THE binary one
since it's linked against pre-glibc2.1.
2. install and rebuild:
$ rpm -ivh XFree86-3.3.3-11.src.rpm
[ or whatever the RPM file called ]
$ cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
$ rpm -ba XFree86-3.3.3.spec
[ ... lots of noise while building .... If all goes well, you'll have
the binary RPMs in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386. ]
$ cd /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386
[ ... rpm -Uvh the rpms ]

Hi!
I am considering to buy a new computer, and am wondering which
processor to use. The machine will mostly be used for architecture
CAD (ARCAD from www.arcad.de). I am currently considering an
ASUS P2B board with a Pentium II at 350 or 400 MHz. AMD-based
motherboard/CPU combinations are a lot cheaper, but there seem to be
more reports about trouble with these boards/CPUs around than about
the Intel variety.
Any experiences, suggestions?
Tanks in advance,
Hans
ps: No, I DO NOT want to run my board at higher speeds than advised,
or play around for ages with BIOS. I want the machine to run
for three to four years.

Ooh, I like that. If you really want a keyboard that has the control
key to the left of the "A" you can get a Keytronics KB-101 PLUS-C. It
has a switch on the bottom to perform the swap. $84 from www.mcglen.com.

It wouldn't hurt to mention the fact that xvidtune does NOT save the modeline
settings for you. They must be entered into the XF86Config file using your

Hi,
I install my old modem, Digicom connection 192DF, on my new PC with

Subject: Linux Newbie / Mouse Problems!
Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 02:43:33 GMT
Greetings All,
I recently installed Redhat Linux 5.1 on a 486DX4 100 machine, and can't get
the Mouse, Microsoft two button Serial v2.0 (Serial port 1) to work under X
Windows. I ran the xf86configcommand and entered different paths for the
mouse, (/dev/cua0), (/dev/ttyS0).I did not see a mouse device. Also I ran the
mouseconfig command and chose cua0 as the device.
The serial port is on a VLB DTC 2278Ecard. I also have a Teac55A CDROM on an
interface card, using address 230. I don't think it uses an IRQ, and I have
had the systemWindows 3.11 once with both the CDROM and the mouse port (Com1)
. I tried switching to a new serial mouse, but no luck.
How should I approach this problem? Should I disable the serial port 1 on the
DTC controller card and install an old serial card I have lying around? And
how hard would it be to install and configure the serial card under Linux? Is
there a way to see what resources are being used in Linux?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jerry,
the only problem with this question is that comuter vendors change their
vendors on a monthly and even weekly basis. With computers selling at
comodity prices, it is very dificult to answer your question witha a
straight answer even if I bought a computer yesterday. Linux users have to
know what's under the hood before installation. Few installations are
completely pain free.
You don't have to be a hardware guru. There are several options. Go to your
local computerfest or small computer retailer. There are ussually a few
linuxers in the crowd. Get help on line with us. Ask basic questions of the
guys who want to sell you the hardware about what they know about linux.
What is supported in linux is pretty complete. Get the hardware how-to and
do some shopping around. That's why we are in here anyhow. Nice windows
hardware (winmodems and such asside) tends to be nice linux hardware in
many cases.
Good hunting

Hi!
I am currently putting together a machine that will predominantly run
architecture CAD (ARCAD, www.arcad.de) under Linux and am wondering
about a good graphics card for this purpose. Two alternatives I am
considering are the ATI Xpert@work with 8MB (because I have worked

Millenium G200 (because c't says thats the fastest under Linux).
Any suggestions?
And any suggestions for a good 19" monitor? I am thinking about
Nokia 446XPro, Elsa Ecomo 19H98, or the flat screen CRTs from
Mitsubishi (Diamond Pro900u).
Thanks a lot,

my V330 AGP video card. I can't figure out what fine tuning I need to
do; this card is supposed to be "supported" in this latest version of
XFree86, but I'm still getting snow and I'm worried this will damage the
card/monitor. Further more 24bpp gives me the same effect, and I'd
rather not be stuck with 16bpp. Thanx a ton for any help!! Please

Either should work. If you have an Adaptec hardware raid controller,

What other respondents have said is correct: Windows 1st, Linux 2nd.
I do like your definition of a "tiny" or "small" partition as being 4GB - only
