Having recently upgraded my Sparc (sparcstation 2) from RH 4.2 to 5.2
I've noticed a bit of a problem using emacs, mc, etc. If I try to scroll up
or down through a file using the up/down arrows the screen doesn't refresh
quite right. It's as if the screen isn't clearing before the app tries to
paint the new characters.
Has anyone else run into this problem?

Yes, you can always solve problems in client software by spending lots of
money.
You could also:
1. get a fixed netscape binary that solves this problem (they exist, now that
the source code is free), or
2. run your XFree86 server in 32bpp mode instead of 24bpp. That will make
netscape and xanim do the right thing.
Both solutions cost an infinite amount less money than the solution presented
above.
Your choice...

I began with Slack (installing on a 386 with floppies - slack is VERY
MUCH the best under those circumstances :-), moved on to RH4.2, and am
now very happy with SuSE5.2. Currently waiting for SuSE 6.1, which I
assume will be available very shortly after kernel 2.2. SuSE 6.0 is out
now, but I believe only in German. As I think the original poster was
from Austria that is probably fine.
I agree with the comments about YaST (German over-engineering and all
that as I remember another poster say :-)

Anyone got any experience with this modem under Linux.
Did its Linux performance match up to Windows ?

I am not sure whether that is related, but do you boot into winXX
before?
Because if you do, the win drivers change some register settings, which
aren't reinitialized during a reboot.
In my case my card claims to have a MAC of ff:ff:ff....
Hope that helps

Some PCI audio cards (including the Ensonic AudioPCI) will produce static
if the PCI bus is being monopolized by the video card.
On an NT machine I work on, there are 2 Matrox video cards. The Ensoniq
AudioPCI will output static unless I turn PCI Retries off
(This setting, when on, increases performance by continuously
retransmitting video data to the video card until receipt is
acknowledged - thus killing the available PCI bandwidth.)
Many other PCI video cards do the same.
There might be a setting for the video card that you can set in
XF86Config to disable the retries.

You might want to try xvidtune. It runs under X, and you can adjust those
height and width parameters with it. Try reading some of the documentations
about it to find out exactly how to use it. I've never had to use it myself,
but I know it _might_ help you guys...

Subject: Upgrade to BusLogic DL
Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 02:54:49 GMT
I currently have a BusLogic LT adapter running under Debian Linux. I have
all my devices connected to it except my scanner. Since I put in the Ultra
SCSI hard drive, I cannot use the hard drive and scanner at the same
time--probably due to cable length limitations. I don't have room for
another SCSI controller either.
To remedy the problem, I ordered a BusLogic DL controller. I figured I could
put it in place of the current LT adapter and run all my devices off the
first channel and hook the scanner (and in the future, other external
devices) to the second channel. However, I just looked at the DL's user
manual at Mylex's web site and it looks like there is only one external
connector and it is on the first channel. I wanted to keep the external
devices on a separate channel. If I hook it up this way it will throw off
Linux, though, since right now it expects the hard drive and other
peripherals on the first channel.
Is there some way to get around this on the controller? How difficult is it
to fix the problem in Linux? It isn't looking as easy as I initially thought
it would be. I'm not an expert with SCSI on Linux configuration and was
hoping it would not require re-configuring Linux.
Thanks,
Kevin

sometimes, I wonder how the human race survived this far, but it can't be
that much longer before we're history.
Emacs users don't need a caps lock key. they have much better ways to
capitalize words, expressions, regions, whatever the need may be. also,
automatic capitalization of frequently typed words is available via
abbrevations. perhaps Emacs users are less sensitive to case than people
who have to type it in by hand -- I don't know. I dispensed with case
long ago, and of course Emacs helped in that process. others may have
the same experience.

Can you specify your problem in detail please ?
Is there a printer filter installed ?
Which one ?
Does it print strange things or nothing ?
Did you compile in printer support ?
And : Does the printer work under other OS ?
What does cat testfile >/dev/lp0 (if your printer is on lpt1:) ?
Is /etc/printcap ok ?
Maybe one of the questions above solve the problem .
I am not familiar with Red Hat but with Suse the common printer drivers
(ApsFilter) work. I am using Magicfilter , another great filter for my HP4L
:-)
Happy printing ,

Just go into the Autoscsi and disable the bios scan for the first channel.
Leave it enabled for the second channel. It shouldn't require any
reconfiguration in Linux.

AMDs website says my motherboard and BIOS are compatible with AMD K6, but
not AMD K6-2 3DNow. I thought that the only difference was extra
instructions in the processor. If that is so, why does the K6-2 not work
anywhere the K6 works?
Does the motherboard and BIOS need extra facilities for K6-2 3DNow?
