I went through much pain and agony setting up my CRW-1622 (also by
Memorex) and then lost all my settings in a crash and do not remember
exactly what it was I did to make it work in the first place... much
help would be appreciated.

I am trying to install Linux on an IBM PS/2 Model 95. I've been
searching the web and found a couple of web pages. The ones I've
found so far that look the most promissing are all based on Slackware.

I saw one post about Microchannel boot disks for Red Hat 5.0. This
would be ideal, as I have the Red Hat 5.0 CD. However, web site
mentioned no longer exists.

Does any one know where Microchannel aware Red Hat 5.0 boot disks can
be found?

If not, I guess I'll start downloading Slackware.

Nope, it is not... My courier was purchased as a 33.6K Modem, upgraded to X2
and then V.90, all FREE... and all of THAT was done when the X2 and V.90 is
out... factoring in the cost of upgrading to the latest modem technology
right when it is out... My Couier have saved me about $300 or more...

If you want to kept labeling other people as iditos and stuff, you shouldn't

Set the modem to tolerate longer loss of carrier... and ask your ISP to do
the same...

I'm running with the same machine as you, a Dell XPS R450 with an STB
nVidia TNT card. You need XFree86 3.3.3. Pick the RIVA TNT driver. I've
attached a copy of my XF86Config file.

Most likely, you've got an old BIOS. You'll need to tell the kernel your
disk's geometry.

Subject: How to build a router ???
Date: Sat, 30 Jan 1999 16:39:26 -0600

I want to build a router. It is to sit between my MediaOne cable modem
and my home network.

It seems that this should be a simple implementation of Linux, since I
already know how to implement routing on my existing boxes.

However, I want a dedicated box, I want it to be secure and I want that
box to do *nothing* except this one (1) routing job. I am looking for
suggestions. Some of the issues I need to examine are:

[a] How *little* Linux need I install and configure to meet these and
*only* these requirements?

[b] What are the minimum hardware requirements to implement this
*without* sacrificing performance?

[c] Where can I find references to this subject? Howto's? Websites?
Books?

[d] Caveats. What are the caveats.

What do you think?

If there is *no* existing Howto, I will be glad to document my success
;)

I'm not a Linux expert and I'm trying to install on a ps/2 as well.

However, in your case, I'm pretty sure that the IBM PS/2 model 70 is
no IDE or EIDE. It most likely is using ESDI, different beast
entirely.

try tweaking with the APM settings for your kernel
I had the same (with an AGP STB Velocity 128 on a Dell XPS300 and with a
AGP Matrox G200 on a clone), I can't remember if I had it with this one
too (this one has the AGP STB Velocity blahblah on a Dell XPS R350 but
I'm using it as the normal one since it's in SVGA for XFree 3.3.2)

this is what I have now:
CONFIG_APM=y
# CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set
CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE=y
CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE=y
CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK=y
CONFIG_APM_POWER_OFF=y
# CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_MULTIPLE_SUSPEND is not set

but like I said, can't remember if this box had the problem also...
anyway: I can't give you any hints about which options to togle because I
can't remember (have a hard time so it seems) that neither
but I believe that the settings where different for the Dell XPS300 and
the clone

good luck

Subject: Problems with number of heads from DOS FDISK partitions and Linux fdisk on
8.4 GB drive
Date: Sat, 30 Jan 1999 17:16:09 -0600

Hi There

I have a problem with the partitions on my new Western Digital Cavaliar
8.4 GB that has been partitioned by DOS FDISK as seen by Linux.

I am running Red Hat 4.1, kernel v 2.0.27 on a
Micron 133 MHz Mironics M54Hi Motherboard with
Phoenix Bios 4.05 upgrade from Micro Firmware with
Win95 on /dev/hda1 (800 MB of 1.6 GB) and Linux on the other half of the
disk. I will upgrade to RH5.2 once I get the disk problem fixed.

Drives are seen as
hda: WDC AC31600H, 1549MB w/128kB Cache, LBA, CHS=787/64/63
hdb: WDC AC28400R, 8063MB w/512kB Cache, LBA, CHS=16383/16/63

The CHS corresponds to the specs from the manufacturer and how the BIOS
sees the disk. I feed in the CHS for the 8.4 GB drive on boot-up (using
LOADLIN hdb=16383/16/63). If I don't do that, it sees the drive as
CHS=1027/255/63.

I partitioned the drive using DOS FDISK and Win95 can see the partitions
fine. There are 4 partitions, 1 primary and 3 logical in an extended
partition to get around the 2.1 GB limit with FAT-16 partitions (I don't
have OSR2 so need to stick to FAT-16).

When I boot into Linux, I see the partitions on boot up

Partition check:
 hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4 < hda5 hda6 hda7 >
 hdb: hdb1 hdb2 < hdb5 hdb6 hdb7 >

However, cfdisk gives a fatal error -- "Cannot seek on disk drive" and
linux fdisk gives the following

Command (m for help): p

Logical partition 5 not entirely in partition 2

I did try deleting all the partitions using linux fdisk and repartitioning
but I still get overlap warnings for the various partitions.

I can mount the partitions in linux and I can create linux partitions but
I am concerned about the warning of an overlap - will this cause a problem
later? It looks like the Start cylinder of the partitions do not overlap
but the Begin cylinders do. I am not sure of the difference between
these. I do not want to be overwriting data on one partition while
writing to another.

Also, I want to install Win/NT on this disk later and having a clean
partition configuration I think would be safer. How do I fix the problem
of partition boundaries?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

We have been using a Dell Inspiron 7000 successfully for the last
3 months (Using XiG X driver) under Linux.

Until last monday all was fine.

Now the PS/2 mouse driver fails to install at boot.

At first it looks like a hardware problem but touchpad and
external mouse still work fine under Windows. Also external
keyboard still works under Linux.

Have tried several alternative kernels/bootdisks but var/log/messages
shows no response after monday.

There is no mouse option in the bios setup

Anybody with a similar experience or remedy please reply.

Please remove NOSPAM from email address if replying to me
- sorry about this.

Be aware that web hsoting obviously requires connections to iniated by
the client browsers - does your "cable-modem" internet connection allow
this? Ie is it a permananent connection with no restrictions of
incoming conections?

Thats an er interesting solution, but you could only get so many network
cards in your server!. Why not just put all the machines on a network,
using either cheap coax cable (which will limit you to 10Mb/s) or just
buy a cheap hub - you can get them for 40 UKP which I think is about $65
? (for a 5 port device)

If you *did* want to install a network card in the server for every
client, well all those extra cards would cost more than a hub I reckon,
and you would have to obtain or make some cables with crossed over
connections at one end.

Sounds about right. But as I said at the top, I think you might want
make sure your internet connection allows connections to be made from
the "rest of the world" side of the link to machines on your local net.

I must have misunderstood the comment about Windows 98 driving 2

of the monitors on the setup screen so I would know the direction to
move the cursors to go from one monitor to the other and back. On
bootup each monitor comes up with different desktop contents that I
have selected. Is this 2 copies of the same desktop?

try getting a hold of XFree86 3.3.3.1 if you have not already done so.
It has basic support for the RivaTNT chip
