Hi.

Does the Diamond MX300 sound card work in Linux?

Has anyone got this card working in Linux. Nothing special, just sound in X
Windows for playing sound files, wav, MP3..etc.

Thanks,
Lou.

Yes, they have firmware as well, that for mostly the AT INTERFACE area...
not the heart and soul of the modem...

Too bad then, mine does.

Brand new? Or do you mean firesale?

BTW, after the Diamond takeover, the once excellent Supra are doing rather
badly, using cheapest component at any cost... Zoom and stuff were blowing
it away like there's no tomorrow... That's with the same chipset.

>>After the discount, it is still more expensive than most modems...

>More fool you...

Nope, you get those modems when they were old and about to be taken over by
newer technologies... I get them while they are hot... and with Courier, I
saved a lot of money while enjoying the extra speed of the current
technology.

Now I use Cable Modem instead... The USR Courier will be kept as a reminder
of how well this modem had served me...

Hmmm -

So far, while all the messages have been very helpful, I don't think
anyone's answered the meat of this original question (which happens to be
one I'm interested in finding out about) - How would you set up a full
Linux box (not a mini-distribution) to route TCP/IP traffic from a small
home TCP/IP network over a cable modem connection (or in my case, a
dial-up ISDN connection) to the rest of the world?

Sorry, but no it won't work under Linux.
Much of the logic has actaully been moved off the modem and into software
DLL's.
Don't ask me why they did it that way, (perhaps to discourage Linux
users???)
Anyway I would take the modem back and get another bradn/model.

You can also use LILO with NT's loader to triple boot. The key is that LILO
should come first and boot linux/nt. Then, setup NT's boot loader to boot NT
and 98. Boom, triple booting...

Neither will print consistently. At first, printtool wouln't even recognize the
parallel port. I thought maybe a hardware problem and bought a card with two
more ports. Now, printtool will spot the printers on the ports but it wont
print anything although it does print to spool. Actually, the epson printed for

Have you run XF86Setup (or another such program) to configure your
video card yet? Try the lowest frequency settings there, make sure
they work, then move up the scale until something breaks. (Check and
see if the frequencies are on your monitor label or if you still have

Hello,

Is any work underway to make it possible to mount a CD-RW disk

new CD-RW drive supports "packet writing" which allows writing less

I have an ADS ChannelSurfer TV+FM card. It's a Bt848 device, but ADS apparently
doesn't want to release documentation for it (at least, they've never answered
me.) There are a couple of notes in the BTTV source (whatever version that
comes with the Linux 2.2 kernel) that the ChannelSurfer TV will be detected, but
they don't know about the TV+FM. When I try it, the boot messages claim that it
detects a Miro card. It displays video, and I haven't tried sound yet since
compiling 2.2. But I can't change channels! Does anyone have any hints as to
how to get this working? I've thought of hacking the source and hard-wiring the
type to ADS instead of Miro, but I haven't got around to it yet.

**This whole thread started because someone was whining about problems
**they had encountered with an inexpensive USR modem model that they
**had purchased, and in their message they slammed all USR products
**because of their unfortunate experience.

I started this :) and I did not slam all USR products. I ragged about
the lack of a volume control, and then stated my opinion that I would
not buy another USR product because there were enough products out
there that such a slap should not be tolerated, and suggested that
others consider it as well. The experience was simply a dissapointment
that USR would stoop so low as to leave out a feature like a volume
control on what has always been a decent line of external modems.

What happend next was an outcry that I was a fool for not buying a
courier, and that couriers were great, and all of us who frankly don't
have $250 for a modem were all the idiots, although you (Rich) were
not among those who took off and slammed all of us losers.

I would be willing to bet that every one of you who have couriers
would run out and buy another one if the need arose, and would NOT
EVER look first to see if the external modem had a volume control. You
would assume it did, because it always has, and always should.
However, the past shows us that USR is not above changing so basic a
feature in the name of a nickel profit. Do you always ask if it has a
speaker?? Hey, they could take that out as well, and you would be
pretty pissed off, just like I was/am That would be my only point back
at the courier owners. If I could afford the best of everything, I
would buy a courier, but such is not the case.

Until this, I have always used and recommended USR, and I find it hard
to believe that I am the only person who would walk into a store, or
mail order, an external modem and think to ask if it had a volume
control, or a speaker. Its IMPLIED, but now the standards are changing
randomly.

No one really read what I was saying, they just all played newsgroup
and jumped in and tried to create havoc. The facts were irrelevant.
They succeeded quite well, don't you think??

John

Subject: Continuing saga of parallel tape drive installation woes
Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 20:44:36 GMT

Now that I know I have to use ftape to support my Conner CTT800E tape
drive I am at the next layer of the onion. I asked this on the
linux-tape discussion list but have not yet received a reply so I
though I'd try here as well.

After installing ftape, I execute the 'insert' script for the modules.
The script outputs a number of messages including some errors. Here
are the messages that I think are errors:

can't locate module parport
trakker.c (trakker_checksum) - checksum error (off by 9c).
...... repeated several times with different "off by xx" number.......
trakker.c (trakker_detect) - can't find trakker interface for ftape id
1.
trakker.c (trakker_detect) - ft_parport_probe(fdc, &trakker->parinfo)
failed: -6.
bpck-fdc.c (bpck_fdc_detect) - - can't find bpck interface for ftape
id 1.
bpck-fdc.c (bpck_fdc_detect) - - ft_parport_probe(fdc, &bpck->parinfo)
failed: -6.

I obvously have some kind of configuration or installation error but
do not know here to go from here. Can someone point me in the right
direction? The available doccumentation has been no help. TIA.

The latest XFree released earlier this month includes drivers for the Matrox
G200 series cards. I have recently bought I marvel G200 8MB, got these
latest XFree (3.3.3 I think) and it works like a dream(considering Ive just
upgraded my machine from a 486DX280 with 1MB cirrus Logic 5428 VLB card!!!)

Try the RedHat mirror sites, updates directory.

Subject: FYI: Driver for the Surecom EP-320X-V PCI Ethernet Card

I purchased this card on the assumption that it would work w/
the tulip driver (the EP-320X did so). The chipset in the
V version is different (the Via chip), and the tulip driver does
not function. Luckily the via-rhine driver seems to work just
fine (http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/index.html). The
company (Surecom) also provides a drive on the servers, but
this driver seems to be buggy. At reboot there are kalloc error
messages indicating that there may be a memory leak.

Subject: ISDN Modems
Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 20:54:30 -0000

I am due to get an ISDN line put in this week. I am currently connecting my
small LAN to the Internet through my Linux box using IP masquerading through
a Motorola 28.8kbs modem.

I would like to continue doing this using the ISDN modem. I will create two
ppp-up scripts, one for a 64kbps connection and one for a 128kbps
connection.

Does anyone know which ISDN modems work well with Linux and should I go for
an Internal or external modem.

I am running a pentium overdrive on a VLB motherboard with RedHat 5.1 with
all the current updated packages on it.

Andrew
