Ha!

I figured it out. Just in case anyone runs across this message and made a similar
error, here's
what it was:

When I compiled 2.2.1 I made a mistake in selecting the character set to be used in
interpreting
the filenames under fat/vfat. I selected the first option (Codepage 437(?)
US/Canada) in
menuconfig, rather than the ISO Latin 1 character set way down below.

So, the low-level processes all saw /dev/hda1 as a valid fat32 partition, but the
filenames were
all psuedo-corrupted by my use of an incorrect character set.

Woulda been nice if there had been some kind of error message there instead of a
console hang, but
hey... this is how I learn about all this stuff...

Well I got two of these NetGear FA310TX REV-D1 babies for my linux box....
and the nightmare began...

I couldn't even get one to function reliably -- let alone two!
I even used the provided drivers ... to no avail.

I was forced install two non-pnp isa ne2000 compatible cards -- no problem.

I even went out and bought two LinkSys EtherFast 10/100 PCI LAN Cards...
I put one in along side my ne2000 -- they worked!
I was feeling kind of lucky, so I ripped out the ne2000 and replaced it with
the other LinkSys.
Nada -- nothing, ever again... same symptoms as two NetGears -- one would
work 50% of the time..
and never both at the same time...

I'm not saying these are bad boards -- cuz I have three in my other WIN98
PCs...
Just the combination of these cards (maybe two), linux, and the provided
drivers really sucks!!!

oh -- I even tried the 0.90k tulip driver as well...

very frustrating,
(let me know if anyone else figures this out!)

Sorry 'bout that, a slip of the finger. I normally verify that the

Not strictly true. They also work very nicely in OS/2.

While I realize this doesn't help you, it *does* seperate them from
winmodems which rely on the computer for a lot of stuff.

A default out-of-the-box install of RH5.2 sets up the first par. port
(lpt1) as LP1. I don't know why they did it that way. After installing
the 2.2.1 kernel, my par. port was changed to lp0, as it should have
always been IMHO.

Hi,

I have an Adaptec 7895 (Dual UW) onboard, when
I partition my hdd's (two IBM DDRS-34560W 4,3Gb SCSI)
disks I get all errors about overlapping partitions.

The disk geometry is 4343 cyclinders. I have partitioned
it using fdisk.

When I change the geometry to H=255, S=64, C=555 (as used
by the Buslogic HA) I don't get ANY errors!!!

Do I have to REPARTITION my entire HDD using the new
geometry? Is there an option in the Adaptec BIOS
to use this geometry?

Is there a way to use these settings as default in Adaptec BIOS?

Thanks!

Hy linux-specialists...

Ive been trying since several days to get ftape with my IOMega Ditto 2GB
internal (connected to floppy-port) working.
But whenever I try to compile ftape (make) I get the following error:

fdc-io.c: In function `fdc_interrupt_wait:
fdc_io.c:388: incompatible type in initialization
fdc.io.c:402: structure has no member named `timeout
...

I tried different kernel-versions (2.0.36, 2.1.132, 2.2.1) and different
FTape-versions (3.04d, 4.02), but I get always the same problem...

What is it I dont see? Am I just too blind, any special option in the
kernel ( I tried some) or can there be a hardware problem (allready at
compilation process)?

Please help

As you can see above, sda is negotiated at 20.0MB/s while sdc just gets
5.7MB/s. Though both are ULTRA-FAST (8bit) scsi devices.

Bios settings have been checked. We also tested unsuscessfully the
no_reset option. Any further suggestions?

I did install it via a DOS partition. Did not try to get the sound card
working, as I do not have any need for it.
The modem will be of some interest, the cdrom is the problem why I am
here: I cannot get it working. It just gives I/O errors when accessing the
disk (i.e. mounting it), although it seems to be recognized as an ATAPI
Disk. Same for the SuSE 6.0 boot disk: After loading the PCMCIA drivers,
it says, yes, there is a CDROM, no, I cannot mount it...

The video card works fine. Its a Neomagic chip that is supported by XFree
(at least the version included with SuSE 6.0.

Hope that helps. If there are any news regarding the CDROM, please let me
know. BTW: 32MB RAM are not enough.

Wolfram.

that's normal: your root disk is first mounted read-only and after a while
(when it's safe?) it is mounted read-write so you can work on it

that's normal too: after 20 mounts (standard) your filesystem will be
checked, your filesystem will also be checked if it was not cleanly
unmounted (after a reboot without a graceful shutdown); several things are
checked (e.g. unexisting files, free space, etc.), for a large disk this
could take some time

>

nothing is wrong! you could skip the filesystem check for filesystems you
don't want checked but i wouldn't advise that (only for special purposes)

dmesg is indeed incomplete (dmesg prints the kernel ring buffer, not all
messages that scroll by are send to the kernel log /var/log/messages), but
you can use [shift]-[page up] and [shift]-[page down] to walk around in
your VC buffer

the script is in /etc/pnp.conf (your pobably only have to uncomment that

this is because of the bad pnp standard, this error is documented in the

So maybe it helps if output of the script is redirected to something
like /dev/console in the commandline invoked by crond?
I mean a line like

/where/your/script/is/testscript > /dev/console

or

/where/your/script/is/testscript 2> /dev/console

if you want to catch output to stderr.

Just a suggestion, but I am interested in the results, too :).

Type 'dmesg | more' for the sda number. It's sda2 on mine now and was sda4
on my previous machine. Assuming the zip is MS formatted, type 'mount -t
vfat /dev/sdax /mnt/zip' where x is the sda number and /mnt/zip has been
created as a directory.

Hope this helps, 93
