Help - What generic SCSI II card for 2.0.9 and DAT
I need to put a SCSI card (only need SCSI II) in a machine
running 2.0.9 ELF (pre glibc) to drive a DAT drive. Soon I shall
be putting Redat 5.2 on there but not yet.
When I ask our technicians to order a card they can only
come up with the latest whizz-bang do everything 90mph
ultra-wide SCSI III device which isn't quite in the hardware list
(at least for 2.0.9) for example "Adaptec 2940UWOF Ultra Wide Open
Firmware SCSI Card Kit" because that's what people want to sell.
What I want is something generic that works
(PCI slot or ISA - I don't care as lonmg as its fast enough
for the DAT).
What card should I tell them to get that you can still get easily
and will work with 2.0.9 PCI bus machine and a DAT ?
(It has to work *before* I put rh5.2 on).
Will the 2940UWOF work with kernel 2.0.9 (re-compiled of course) ?

Subject: ZIP Parallel Port Under Red Hat 5.2
Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 03:40:15 GMT
The following is from the Red Hat 5.2 Installation Guide:
[QUOTE MODE ON]
E.9.8.1 Question
How do I use my parallel port zip drive?
E.9.8.2 Answer
Here's something you can try: edit /etc/conf.modules and add
the following line to the others:
alias scsihostadapter ppa
If you need to send the ppa driver any options about which
LP is being used etc, you would add the line:
options ppa ppa=<options go here.>
[QUOTE MODE OFF]
Now, this just begs a few more questions:
1) when I pull up /etc/conf.modules, I get a BLANK PAGE! In
other words, there's nothing there! Is this "normal"? And
if so, can I just go ahead and try to add the line as stated
(even if it will be the ONLY line in the file)?
2) Under <options go here.>: What options? If I'm using
the DOS LPT1:, what is the corresponding device name in
Linux that I should use? Anything else?
Believe me, folks, I've spent about four hours this evening
poring over web pages, and I STILL can't get a good answer
to the question: How do I get Linux to recognize my Zip
Parallel Port drive? There's GOTTA be more clarity than
this!

Subject: AGP Diamond Speedstar A50 Setup Problem, need help
Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 08:44:56 GMT
I just upgraded to a 300mhz AMD k6-2 on ASUS P5A motherboard which came with
Diamond Speedstar 8mb AGP video card. I am running Caldera Lite. The version
that came with the installation did not suport this card, so I downloaded
XFree86 3.3.3.1 which supports this card and chip with updated SVGA server.
Installation seemed to go fine, but when I run XFSetup with Diamond card I
get vertical bar B&W screen without mouse "X", shifts to gray off center
screen, and hangs. Only way out is to hit reset. System works fine with old
Trio PCI card. I tried xfconfig but no luck there. Used minimal settings for
monitor, which is Gateway Vivitron 1572/CPD-15F13. Couldn't find monitor
listed in database, maybe someone could suggest settings? I can start KDE
with Diamond card but display goes haywire. Card works fine with Win98 or
31.1 I am recent to Linux and not a hardware guru, and would appreciate any
sugestions.

do I mount C: to copy files to my Linux drive? C: is FAT32..

Good Move!
That same reasoning works for Win95/98. Putting the 'swap' on a different
HD, preferably on the secondary IDE controller, will speed up your system.
For the same reasons that you should put your CDROM on the secondary
controller, to let your system work with the primary drive while it
reads/writes to the devices on the secondary controller.

That's the trouble with Toshiba... they put out more model numbers than
China has people. And then they conveniently forget about the
customer...
Toshiba Support: "A T2115CS? Never heard of it. Maybe it's an older
model"
Me: "I just bought the damn thing six months ago!"
Toshiba Support: "Sorry, we can't help you."
While other manufacturers play the model number game, Toshiba seems to
be particularly good at it!
Why not just open the thing up and have a look at the chipset?

Subject: LinkSys EtherFast 10/100tx & Linux 2.2
Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 11:14:07 GMT
Hi,
I recently purchased a Linksys Etherfast 10/100tx ethernet card for a linux
server I run. However, I upgraded to Linux 2.2 and it appears that there are
some imcompatability problems when I try to use the tulip drivers. I have
tried compiling them into the kernel and using them as modules, but no-go on
getting it on the network. I have link lights between the card and the hub
(which is an autosensing Linksys 10/100 24-port hub). I notice that after
about 10 to 15 minutes after the server is on, with the tulip drivers loaded,
and attempting to send packets, the kernel will panic and force me to reboot
the system.
My question is, how compatable are these cards with the 2.1.x and/or 2.2.x
kernels? Are there any drivers I should try? What works? And has anyone
been experiencing the same problems? It is essential I get this card
operating at 100mb/s with as little downtime as possible.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Guys, when I used to use RH 4.2 and I dial up, my hostname remained
localhost.localdomain, which is perfect for me running MPI. Now that I
upgraded to RH 5.1, the host name is dynamic evertime it changes.
I would like to know how I can set up my system to keep the hostname as
localhost.localdomain w/o rebooting. This only happens after I dial up,
if I boot w/o dialing up, my hostname is still localhost.localdomain.
