i have upgraded my adaptec bios to v1.34.3.

new symptoms.

1) i can now reboot via the `reset' button. i no longer need to turn
   the power off.

2) when i try to reboot straight from linux `shutdown -r now', i no
longer even get the adaptec blurb.

so now i ask, is my card not getting the hint about rebooting when i
do a shutdown -r? how do i tell the system to reset a bit harder than
before? is it a kernel setting or a shutdown configuration?

when i boot i get

then i get a page of (paraphrasing from my

it all down)

Gotta use ghostscript and set it up as a filter in /etc/printcap.
Graphic files have to be turned into PS files, and then turned into PDL
files by gs....

I agree on what you say. I will personally go for the Matrox Millennium G200
(8MB SGRAM version). The card is more stable than the TNT. XFree86 3.3.3.1
do support the TNT but they are still very fresh to the market and I cannot
promise all the TNT card can work well with the XFreee86 3.3.3.1.

TNT cards are good on Microsoft Windows but definitely not X windows at this
moment. Keep check on the updated XFree86.

I have a system similar to this where I work, and have had some serious problems
with it. The thing that killed my system was a bad motherboard. A good test of
this would be to try to compile and link a new kernel. If you can do this you may
just have problems with your video card. In my situation the IDE and cache
elements were no good. If you cannot compile a kernel then I would suggest
reinstalling the compiler and/or the distribution you have chosen. If this doesn't
help you may just have a bad motherboard. I doubt seriously that your processor
has failed. As with your situation many of my problems were not uncovered untill I
started using X. Hopefully I have given you some help you can use.

Regards,
    Ryan

Need some help!
This should become a relativly popular video combination; it's provided
by Micron. However; I can barely make X-windows work. Will the
author of the definitive config file for this please speak up ???

The video card is: 16MB Diamond Viper 550 TNT AGP
(do I need to worry about the clocking on this ??? the chipset ???)
(does Diamond MM webpublish XF86 config files for this ???)

The Monitor is Hitachi SuperScan 812 21" (20" viewable)
(There is no model # on the front of the monitor, the model ID
is on the back and is "CM812U")
    Hitachi 812 tech info from
              http://www.hitachidisplays.com/products/21_813.htm is:
auto sync range: 31-107 kHz 50-160 Hz,
    max res 1600x1200,
    refresh : 640x480=160Hz, 800x600=160Hz,

Any help is much appreciated; and thanks in advance! (Also, forgive

In the sacred domain of uk.comp.os.linux didst Robert Waugh

: Use the ppp setup tool that is in YaST. In fact I don't know if it is in

Nope.
System Admin -> Network configuration -> PPP

: That will do it all for you, I assume you will have to use the default
: PPP setup and add your own phone number, username and password. I
: recomend not using diald at first.

diald is pretty pointless.
just use the two scripts supplied. ppp-up and ppp-down.

I would have to suggest a 3Com card they are way more expensive than netgear or
linksys, but they "always" work. For 10MPS try a 3c590 and for 100MPS try a 3c595.
Also check out the Ethernet-HOWTO on your favorite LDP mirror. I have been very
successful at finding used
version of these cards for a substantial savings if you are in the Dallas-FtWorth,
Texas area I can give you some hints where to go. Hope I have helped.
