I have two hard drives, the first one (1.5 Go) with linux on it, and the
second one (6.5 Go) with Windows 95 on it. On this second drive, there
is a primary partition that I cannot delete (all my data is in it), and
an extended partition (my Bios doesn't deal with more than 2.1 Go hard
disks) containing 3 logical partitions. I am using RH 5.2 and the
installation program isn't able to read the partition table of the
second drive, and therefore I cannot tell Lilo to give me the choice to
boot on the second drive. But I would like to be also able to boot on
this drive to use Windows 95. What can I do?
(If I delete the extended partition, linux will probably read the
partition table, but will fdisk allow me to recreate dos partitions on
the disk after that?)

Thanks for any advice.

Hi

I have installed on Proliant 1600 with Redhat 5.1 and Redhat 5.2. Its very
simple and very easy. It takes just around half an hour to install.

Do you have Smart Controller if so you need to first install Linux on HDD
connecting to Embedded SCSI port and apply the patch to make Smart bootable.
During installation you wont get the option to install on Smart Array.

You can find the Smart2 driver in the following web site.

http://www.insync.net/~frantzc/cpqarray.html

Do not configure your NIC during installation instead after complete
installation execute the command "insmod tlan" at the prompt. Then Execute
command "netconf" at prompt and configure your NIC.

Regards

Hi all,

Is there an upgrade necessary for Isdn4Linux if I use kernel 2.2.1? I
switched back from Suse 5.3 to Redhat 5.2. Redhat doesn't have
Isdn4Linux on their distribution. Do I need Isdn4Linux is I use Kisdn?

I'm using Redhat 5.2, Kernel 2.2.1, Kde 1.1

Isdn4Linux and Kisdn aren't installed yet.

First, I'd like to thank the people who answered all previous queries. I
think I am beginning to sound out the limitations of Linux. Second, I'm
going to lay out my specific situation in as much detail as I, a non-tech
can currently muster. I don't actually *UNDERSTAND* most of this alphabet
soup, I've just copied it off the manual and their web site (the whole
system is "as is" from factory, right now).

I own the following:

Acer 1242M desktop system.
The details:

Processor/System Memory
166MHz AMD-K6 MMX Enhanced Processor
ZIF Socket
16MB EDO system memory
256KB pipeline burst cache

Devices:
One 2.0GB 3.5" hard disk drive
One 3.5" 1.44MB diskette drive
CD-ROM drive (12X) (enhanced local bus IDE)

Graphics
64-bit accelerator
1MB EDO video memory
MPEG video playback
ATI Rage (I *THINK*) graphics card, or some kind of ATI doodad

Monitor
AcerView 34T

Multimedia
16-bit adio with 3D stereo sound (I am fairly certain that *this* card is PnP)
Up to 44.1KHz sampling rate
Joystick/MIDI port

Telecomm
33.6K fax/modem (internal, also PnP, I think)

I/O
Two high-speed serial ports (dual 16C550)
One high-speed parallel port (ECP/EPP)
PS/2 compatible keyboard port
PS/2 compatible mouse port
BIOS is Plug and Play, so I guess that means that all the installed cards
are also plug and play.

Expansion
One PCI slot open
One ISA slot open

Input devices
104-key PS/2 compatible keyboard
PS/2 compatible mouse

I intend to get the following hardware:
More memory (but how much is a good idea?)
56K modem (internal or external? External would give me another slot...)
graphics tablet (my wife is an artist,
"http://www.elfwood.com/lothlorien/artists/kirsten/kirsten.html"--come on,
give her work a look)
Webcam or other moving video input device
A second HD (recent decision based on how much space my wife's artwork is
starting to take up, and it would let me put infrequently use applications
on the other drive to free up main HD space).

The computer gets used for the following functions:
Word processing, which includes pictures, charts, graphs, etc. cut and
pasted into the documents. I want to preserve this cut-and-paste
functionality.
Use of a spreadsheet to create charts/graphs and do basic statistics.
Creation of slides for scientific presentations.
Art creation, both original artworks _de novo_ and altered scans of photos
and pencil works.
Game playing, especially by my children. My sons especially like the
Broderbund, Disney, and Sesame Street games, and I won't give up their
pleasure.
Likewise, I want a full desktop environment.
Finally, installation should be automatic, requiring nothing more than
manufacturers' drivers to load if needs be.

Once I get the camera, I also want to do video conferencing--in color, not
black-and-white.

I am not a programmer, nor do I wish to become one.

So, given the preceeding list, and given that I've an interest in Linux,
what are specific recommendations regarding such interest?

Try a newer version of the driver. If you're using the one
that came with kernel 2.0.32 it's pretty dated by now.

Why not use the free Partition Manager (you can find it on ZDnet;
Actually it's shareware, but the fee is a mere $10), and it has all the
functions of Partition Magic, boot manager included.

http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=000QXD&b=

However, I prefer LILO.

The answer came from a helpful soul almost immediately: SCSI bioses
often load themselves in the last bit of memory, so start lowering
the values of mem to avoid collisions. mem=124 did the trick.

XConfigurator -card "ATI All-in-Wonder Pro"

XConfigurator -card "ATI All-in-Wonder"

We have just upgraded a server to a PC-100 Super7 100MHz board with a
K6-2/350 and 128MB of RAM. There is one SCSI drive with an Adaptec
AHA-2940 controller. We are running Redhat 5.2. After booting, we
noticed that the system was only seeing 64MB of RAM. Accordingly, we
added append="mem=128M" to lilo.conf, ran lilo, and rebooted. However,
the system would then hang in the boot process at the point where it is
reading the RAM disk that (for reasons I haven't bothered to understand,
being an IDE guy) is needed as part of the boot process with a SCSI
drive. Removing the append line and rerunning lilo fixes the hang
problem, but of course Linux once again only sees 64MB. The same
problem arises if we simply add mem=128M as an option at the LILO
prompt.

Any help or suggestions appreciate.

I have had an ongoing problem with my internet connection.
Often times when I try to go to a website that seems to be having
problems or is maybe too slow in responding, my modem drops the
connection. This will not happen if I dial into my shell account.
There is no timer set to disconnect me in the dial-up connectoid.
The problem is not related to time.
I am using Netscape 4.07. I have never heard of that problem before.
It is very frustrating and wastes a lot of money.
Any help will be much appreciated.
