Subject: Modem not responding !
Date: 19 Mar 1999 16:48:33 GMT

Hi,

I've just installed the RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36). My modem is a USR
56K professional message modem (external modem). I still have a winmodem
that I don't use anymore inside my computer.

Under Windows 95, my modem is connected on COM 1 (port 03F8, irq 4).
Therefore in control-panel I set my modem to /dev/cua0 (I've also tried
/dev/ttyS0).

Reading the Serial-HOWTO, I try to talk to my modem with kermit but I
get no answers at all (not even a beep !).

My mouse is an Intellimouse connected on psaux (PS/2), thus there
shouldn't be a conflict between my modem and my mouse.

In /var/log/dmesg I have :

Serial driver version 4.13 with no serial options enabled
PS/2 auxiliary pointing device detected -- driver installed.

Shouldn't I have some lines about my serial ports ?
When typing setserial -g /dev/cua0 I get :

/dev/cua0, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4

Is it normal to get an unknown UART ? I set UART to 16550A but it didn't
change anything.

Is it possible that the winmodem still inside my computer hides in some
way the other modem ?

Any ideas ?

Laurent

Lying, old man! That modem is preconfigured to use COM2, IRQ3!

I wish to install linux as well as win95 on my computer. This is a new box

difference which OS I install first?
Thanks

want to hear music on linux with soundblaster live? ok but you must have a
dos/win95 partition on your HD,with sblive installed... and LOADLIN installed
on it also... now, you can find and execute under dos/win95 a sblive tool
named SBECFG.EXE it will give you the right config to put in the kernel. (my
config is port=240,irq=9,dma=0,7 and mpu401=330. when done, go to linux and
compile the kernel with SOUNDvalidated,SB16validated, DEV/AUDIOvalidated, and
PARAMETERS put 240/9/0/7/330/-1. now you can reboot on dos, looking on screen
that SB16 emulation is validated. finally, launch linux from dos LOADLIN
(look at the doc for whats LOADLIN). you can now play a cd with KDE cdplayer
(i am on suse 6 linux). playing the game galaga, the sound isnt there,
somebody knows why ??? for now i can only play a music cd, but if anybody
knows something more, TELL ME! good luck! chris geneva switzerland

You realize your solution is as much a "HACK" as anything else -- while it
gets around the problem you're having, it could prove to be the source of
future errors if this gets incorporated into the main body of the code. I
think the fundamental presumption noted in the comment (i.e., that if the
keyboard hangs, the system isn't usable anyway) needs to be addressed and a
"proper" fix implemented

[code & hack snipped -- hack is to ignore error condition and simply return
from the subroutine instead of jumping back to the top of the loop and
trying again]

Hi,
I have a AMDK6-II PC with Win98 and Linux RH5.2. It has Rockwell HCF 56K
Data/Fax modem (PCI/CPQB0BC is an identifier). On win98, this modem is
connected to COM2 port. This is not working with Linux(?). I tried to use
the device file (modem link to cua1) /dev/cua1 as specified in HOWTO(?) as
COM2 - cua1 mapping i'm getting tcgetattr error when I tried to use chat
program. If I create a link of /dev/modem to /dev/cua0 atleast I'm not
getting any error. Now here I'm confused because of this behaviour. What
should I do? I'm not able to connect to intenet or send email from linux. My
ISP is GTE and I have all the required information about domain name,
nameserver etc. Can anybody answer these questions?

Many many thanks in advance!!!

No need to use the PNP tools, these are for ISA based cards--which the

I've had success getting mine to work under RedHat v5.2 with kernel
2.0.36. Just disable the default OSS sound drivers that come with the

Be sure to read through the HOWTO at the above site.

You must install the LILO on to the MBR Master Boot Record and set using
fdisk the master hda1 or sda1 to (boot or active) and the LILO must be
installed on the MBR, then and only then will it boot of HD.

2.2.3 it doesn't work but it is loading the eepro100 driver. I think this
my problem but I cannot find out either how to load the eepro back on
instead or what the parameter list is for the eepro100 to get it to work.
With the eepro I had to use these lines in my conf.modules file...

alias eth0 eepro
options eepro iox0x210 irq=11

When I enter these into the eepro100 it tell me io is an invalid parameter.
Can anyone help?

Right... this sound good to my ears, but what about the software
support for the Pulsar under Linux ? I mean does exist some linux soft able
to use the card facilities for mixing, applying effects and such, or
is it still a dream ?
I believe that the better efficiency of Linux about fragmentation
and file systems in general could be a relief. I'm not (yet) very
experienced with DAWs, but I had some problems with fragmentation
while using just SoundForge after a few hours of editing.
On the other hand, how will be solved real-time problems ?

I'm trying to get my ethernet card working with linux. I have to some
extent, I found a semi-supported .c file as a driver written for it.
The driver worked, under kernel 2.0.36. However, i can't get it to
compile under 2.2.1. Does anyone have any suggestions? I get errors
like SLOW_DOWN_IO not defined, dev_tint not declared, etc. Maybe
someone that knows about drivers can fix it? I tried, but I know too
little about network drivers to understand how I need to fix it. If
anyone is interested email me.

The good news is that you don't need a patch if you upgrade your kernel to
2.2.1.

The bad news is that I cannot mount the MO devices with kernels 2.2.2 and
2.2.3. Who knows why?

All the drivers for the hardware should come with your distribution.

To get the latest video drivers, you go to http://www.xfree86.org.

Your videocard isn't on the supported list, but other cards with the same
chipset are.

You should check to see if your SCSI card is supported.

This is not a modem at all. It is a sort of data pump with a VXD driver
