The Celeron 400 (like all Celerons) is designed to run with a 66 Mhz
Front-side bus. It won't work at 100 Mhz. The 300A can often be
made to work at 100x4.5 but that's not something that most of us
want to fool with.
Don't get a no-name motherboard. Do get one with the BX chipset that
will let you clock the CPU at 75 Mhz FSB (450 Mhz CPU speed).
Also don't get on-board sound or video... even if it works with
Linux, it's not worth it.

Hi all,
Another question:
At the moment I have a standard 2-button microsoft mouse.
At work I use UNIX and an HP 3-button mouse.
The middle mouse button on the HP acts as a type of 'paste' ie you
highlight what you want with the left (and right ) button and then paste
that into a file / prompt with the middle button.
I really miss this function at the moment so I am about to buy a
3-button mouse.
But, before I do, does this function work with SuSE linux 6.0 and kde ?
Also, I note that when you CTRL-CLICK on an xterm I can't get one of the
menus to appear (I normally CTRL-MIDDLE click to get this on my HP)
Will this be solved by a three button mouse ?
Ian.

This may be true, but just throwing more hardware at a problem piece is
not a solution. It may work for M$, but for those of us who are on a very
limited computer budget, getting faster CPU's and such is not a cost
effective option.
->They are cheap and reliable, is it any wonder they are use alot?
Cheap, yes. Reliable, very questionable.
As a side 'project', I am an admin at a startup ISP. We have Cisco
hardware for the modems and routers. We have a few callers that use <spit>
those damned winmodems, and just about every one does not get very good connect
speeds when they dial in. Sometimes, updating the driver for the silly thing
helps, but not always. However, when one of our callers replaced that
piece of epoxy that was taking up a slot with a modem (no, I don't consider
the win things to be modems. I won't give them the credit), their connection
rates improved in both speed and stability.

I care. I want every bit of CPU power put towards the programs I run,
not a cheap piece of wannabe hardware.

And as ever, to comes down to money. I can appreciate this, to a

selling substandard hardware and equipment.
However, this is the wrong 'froup for this. I degress. :-)

Here, the MO is connected as /dev/sdc and I could format it using:
mke2fs -b 2048 /dev/sdc
Then I could mount it and use it:
mount /dev/sdc /mnt
So far you do not need fdisk.

Did you use the "-b 2048" option?
I used it to create two 300MB partitions. I filled them with data and verified,
that everything was OK.

Don't worry, I figured something could have gone wrong with the email,

I used that page to set up my printer. But what I mean is _how_ do i
change the upp file?
I tried changing the -r1440x720 line, to -r300x300 but that gave weird
results. I'd also like to know how to make it a b/w printer.
I'd like to have a fast (low resolution) b/w printing setup for drafts.
How do I do this? Can you maybe send me a upp file for this. You
mentioned in a previous posting that you got all resolutions to print.

upd or upp? the later I guess. I already knew from Zack's Uniprinter
page that I need to setup seperate printers for different settings.
Awkward, but doable.
BTW is there any project where a proper printer driver setting is being
worked on???

No, you can't. The SB16 and other emulation on the SBLive is done in the
Windows driver, not in hardware, so it's totally silent under Linux.

Jim,
I had similar problems the other day. I was playing around a friend's
hardware:
Diamond C300 Slot-1 motherboard ($39.00 from TCComputers)
ATI 3D Charger AGP 8Mg ($40.00)
Intel Celeron 333 (about $80.00)
other generic stuff, installed Debian 2.0 running X 3.3.1 or 3.3.2
(I forget which). Both the SVGA and Mach64 servers exhibited a lot
of distortion on the right half of the screen.
The solution was to go to www.xfree86.org and download the BINARIES
for just XF86_SVGA and XF86_MACH64 and put them in place of the old
binaries. Once I did that, the Mach64 server ran beautifully, as the new
version properly identified the Rage IIc chipset on the AGP bus.
The SVGA server really wasn't necessary... I downloaded it just in case.
This is a bit of a hack, but it worked on short notice, and there isn't
much of a better solution for getting hardware support from X 3.3.3
until the Debian package maintainers finish porting it to Debian.

You can try WinDriver from KRFTech. WinDriver is the only device driver
development tool that supports Linux. The great thing about WinDriver is that
the same driver code you develop using it, will run on Linux, Win 9x, Win NT,
Win CE. More platforms are constantly developed. This saves time the time
needed to port drivers from one OS to another and cuts down on maintanence
costs.
You can try WinDriver for free at http://www.krftech.com

Using slackware (3.6 and 4.0 prebeta).
I have a sony 32max (cdu711, I think) that isn't recognized at boot up.
It is recognized during install.
dmesg | grep ATAPI shows hdc as having an unknown device. The cdrom is
master on ide 2 (irq 15).
Any ideas on how to get it to work?
I put an older 8xnec ide cdrom in place of the sony and all is well. It is
something about this cd drive, but I don't know what. To be sure it isn't a
bad cdrom drive I installed red hat 5.2 and all works correctly. I don't
care much for red hat (personal taste) so I took it off and reinstalled
Slackware (latest
version...also tried 3.6) and I'm back to ground zero.
Any help is very much appreciated.

Yes, that is that most obvious explanation (could be memory,
mainboard, or CPU).
A SCSI drive giving out would tend to produce errors more along the
lines of "I/O error" (or "sense failed" or however they are worded, I
forget). Likewise for most peripherals. But memory/mainboard/CPU
will tend to produce random "can't happen" type errors such as the one
you mention. A bad or off-spec power supply can also produce random
symptoms, and there are some cheap ones out there but I'm not sure it
would be my first guess.

The kernel 2.2.x "HOWTO" is at:

BTW, kernel 2.2.5 has just been released; hopefully this will fix the
