Usually it means there's a hardware-problem. I advise to replace your

I have one of these cards, so I am hoping for it too :)

Subject: What is the secret to Soundblaster AWE32 IDE ports?
Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 04:11:53 GMT
I have an ATAPI EIDE CD-ROM which works fine as /dev/hdd under SuSE 5.3.
If it's attached to the second IDE port as a slave I can even boot the SuSE
install CD from it.
Someone gave me a hard drive (my fourth) and now I'm trying to get the CD
to work on the IDE port of my AWE32 card. I read the HOWTOs, etc and I
think I've done everything. I have set up isapnp and put a hdg=cdrom in
lilo.conf. The IDE controller shows up in /proc as ide3, the IRQ shows up
as IRQ10-same as the Creative manual calls for. When the system boots it
tries to talk to the drive but gives up after 2 0FF errors. Without the
hdg=cdrom it ignores it completely. I also checked the Windows setup and
that's how it's working there (yes it works in Windows after I moved it to
the SB card's IDE port).
I have tried booting Windows first with the DOS mscdex stuff in autoexec.
The drive is jumpered as master but I've also tried it as slave and single.
It works fine under Windows all 3 ways.
I give up. What incredibly dumb thing have I done this time?

If you want a really small installation you can use mulinux: One
floppy for lynx and other nice network apps. One floppy for X. This
installation (20 MB) is on my msdos partition (100 MB). I use it on a
388SX25. The Zenith PC's are a bit different, so be prepared...

I had the same problem and the right setting of irq in isapnp and
setserial did the trick. For a friend of mine, the modem just didn't
listen a word of what isapnp was telling him. So we just disabled the
pnp feature of the modem and set it to a port and an irq that we then
gave to setserial.

Without the need to artificially generate this years software sales
revenue there really is no need break everything else on the system
just because one lemming wants a shell like command.com or finder.
Besides, we're not allergic to diversity.

Hi Glenn,
How long have you set your program to wait for pppd to start? 30 sec is not
adequate. 60 sec (generally) gave it enough time.
Also, verfiy that you have the correct authenication for your ISP set. Just some
suggestions...

Can anyone help me? I have a new Western Digital Hard Drive (5.1 gig,
UDMA). Linux tells me that my boot partition is too big. NT can't boot
from it (I can install it from CD, but when it restarts the computer, it
hangs....but installs fine from a different HD).
Are my settings wrong? Where would I look in the bios(ALI Alladin 5)?
Win98 works perfectly and the bios autoselect detects the drive just
fine.
Do I need to buy a new HD to run NT and Linux? How do I shop for a HD
that doesn't have any problems?

I plan to get a CDRW to backup my single-user linux machine. I'm
thinking of HP 8100i or Sony Spressa, but I'd appreciate any positive
or negative recommendations. I'd also like to know if there is any
backup software available that is convenient to use. Something that
does incremental backups nightly so I don't have to replace the CD
often would be nice.

I don't have the machine in front of me but there are two settings in the BIOS
that have to do with the onboard SCSI. One of them allows you to turn off the
SCSI BIOS. Do this, as it doesn't play nice with the driver.

That would point at bad cables in my experience.
>From one of my machines:
eth0 Link encap:10Mbps Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:97:24:FD:A5

RX packets:11933768 errors:66 dropped:0 overruns:62
TX packets:12060794 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
Interrupt:11 Base address:0x300
A MUCH lower error rate.
Try replacing the cables.
(And, yes, you can see assymetric failures with bad twisted pair cables,
since one pair is Tx and one is Rx, the system with the icky Rx pair
will have problems receiving, though less problems sending.)
You may also want to see why you're running in promiscuous mode: that
will generate a LOT of extra interrupts (though not too bad on a
two-machine LAN).
