The basic ghostscript Epson driver does a reasonable job for text -- 360
dpi at least.

As for graphics, especially printing photos, I use Gimp which has its
own printer drivers, including one for the Stylus Color 800, which
should be close. That driver does a very nice job. It's not quite as
good as the Windows driver, though, so for truly critical work I load a
picture up in Photoshop and print it across the net to my Linux box
which has the printer shared via Samba. It's a bit clumsy, but it works
well enough that I'm not tempted to "fix" things.

Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 23:03:20 GMT

I'm trying to get a Conner (pre-Seagate) DAT drive to
work with a SIIG SCSIPro controller (Advansys chipset)
under Linux 2.2.6. I have good cabling and an active
terminator on the bus.

I have SCSI tape support compiled in as well as the
Advansys driver. /proc/scsi/advansys/0 reports correctly
the controller parameters; at boot time the kernel sees
one host on the controller but does not recognize it
as a tape drive. There is no /proc entry for the tape drive.
Attempts to access it it mt result in device does not
support operation. MAKEDEV generates /dev/st0 and /dev/nst0
but not the {l,m,h} devices.

I tried fiddling with the drive's dip switches, turning parity
on and off with no effect.

Is the above just a bad hardware combo that will not work under Linux?
Anyone else using Advansys controllers with SCSI tape drives,
be they 4mm, 8mm or linear tape?

Do an altavista search for Opti931. When I was looking for Opti933
support, I ran across a page that details Opti931. If I remember right,
just configure it as a MAD16 card and it should work.

The SiS 6326 is supported with the latest XFree86. Get the updates from
Redhat's site. Then search http://www.searchlinux.com for my earlier
postings on how to edit the XF86Config file so that the card is really
configured correctly (XConfigurator doesn't do it).

I don't know about the sound card.

The SB Live doesn't work under Linux yet. However, Creative Labs has someone
working full time
in writing a driver for it. It will hopefully come soon.

and soon, as Micro$haft is deprecating the ISA bus.
When you can't get a new motherboard with ISA slots, how much

It's still a bit unstable but people are using it, I have stuck the
list of mirrors at the end of this article.

I have one question of my own though...

I have the USB controller on my motherboard and I have the USB drivers
retrofitted into the kernel and the driver module will load and will
tell me that everything is OK. I also have a USB mouse that I would like
to try but the USB mouse has a standard 4 pin USB connector and the
motherboard has a largish pin header that is nothing like the USB connector.

The motherboard docco says that the pin header contains two USB connections
within it but no adapter came with the motherboard and no one that I have
asked has any adapter that would be suitable. What I need is something that
will fill an empty slot on the edge of the PC box with a pair of USB
connectors and connect internally to the pin header on the motherboard.

I could even make one up myself if I could get panel-mountable USB connectors
but I have no idea where to get them from. It seems like USB is taking a
long time to soak into the Australian marketplace...

OK, the list of USB driver mirrors:

Hi

I'm trying to install Red-Hat 5.2 Linux on a 4 year old Compaq Deskpro XL
Pentium Pro computer. The installation however stops during installation of
the packages and I have to reboot.

I have earlier installed Linux from the same CD-ROM on another computer
without problems, so I guess it is a hardware problem.

The computer is a Pentium Pro 200Mhz with 16kbyte primary cache and 256kbyte
secondary. 128 Mbyte standard RAM. 2Mb WRAM Matrox Millenium graphics card.
. SCSI hard-disk 2Gb. PD CD Drive SCSI (COMPAQ PD-1 LF-1094C). PCI and EISA
architecture (integrated AMD PCNET Ethernet and SCSI-2 controllers and
drivers). Soundblaster compatible soundcard. EICON DIVA ISDN modem.

Have you got any idea why this doesn't work and how I can get it to work,
please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I currently have a Seagate Medalist Pro setup as Master and an old
Western Digital as slave. The slave jumper is on the WD and I
didn't use any jumpers on the Seagate to make it master. Aware BIOS
recognizes them as master and slave.
Anyway, I want to install Linux. So I bought a Maxtor 17 GB drive. I
planned to use that as my boot drive and have Win98 on that and use the
Seagate (6.4GB) for Linux. After setting the Maxtor as master and
putting the slave jumper on the Seagate, BIOS does not see either drive.
I can have the Maxtor alone as master, the Seagate as master with a
Maxtor slave, but I can't have it the other way around. The 2nd IDE
channel is being used by my 2 CD drives (ROM and RW).
I could continue to use the Seagate for Windows and use the Maxtor
for Linux with some DOS partitions on it, but that's not how I want it. I
want this to work. Thanks.

I'll just add that I had the same thing on a Debian system and I went to
the XF86 home page and downloaded their binary for the XF86_SVGA program
and now I use that as my X server and it works fine. I do notice that
there are tiny pixel flickers that look a bit like timing problems but
maybe this is a limitation of the SiS graphics chips. Maybe some dod clock
frequencies work better than others...

They seems to change a bit depending on what is being displayed but mostly
they turn up on the grey hatched X background when I use the higher
resolutions. I can live with it as is but if someone knows and easy way to
clean it up I would be interested. I don't want to sit and adjust the dot
clock and timings until it clicks.

Well, don't write-off the ISA bus too soon. I, as well as many others,
still need a simple but fast enough interface (several M bytes/sec) for
something quick and dirty. USB and PCI are too complicated and expensive
for low volume custom interfaces. I prefer MBs with more ISA slots, even
if i have to pay a little bit more. Long live the ISA bus, despite the
effort of I? and M$.
