Subject: How install 2 3C905 PCI on a router ?
Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 04:27:30 GMT

Hi all,

I try to install 2 PCI NIC (3C905+3C905B) on my Linux (RH5.2 2.2.4) router.. I
tried everything to avoid irq conflict :

- driver compiled with the kernel (3C59x)
- module driver, with options lines in conf.modules
- append="ether=10... in lilo.conf
- try to change irq with 3c90xcfg.exe from 3com (irq is read only)
- disable PnP in bios

but both irq are still 9.
I can run both NIC separetly, but obviously not together.
and I still need to install a third NIC.. Is somebody running a router with 2
PCI NIC ? Can somebody explain me how irq works on PCI ?
Please, please, please help me.. any advices, experiences or comments welcome.

Thanks
fred

So what happened, was there an error message? how far did the boot
proceed?

I would try installing with the SCSI boot drive at ID0, and when
the install gets to the point of installing LILO, install it in the
MBR, and use the "linear" option. If your install gives you an
option of creating a boot disk, take it. It's worked for me using
a 2940UW with an 8Gig drive...

Probably won't hurt, but if you can get the nic to use a different IRQ
that's better, esp. if it's going to be a server.

I had that problem once, and what you have to do is reset all the internal
registers (on an USR 33.6 internal, there are six) :
ATZ0
ATZ1
ATZ2
ATZ3
ATZ4
ATZ5
You do this as long as it says OK after a command.

It worked for me, I hope it'll work for you too :)

Well there is a large DIN connector on it but where can you buy a good
keyboard with a large DIN plug? PS/2 (mini) is standard so I was amazed
there aren't any on the Asus p5a-b board.

There is but for the mouse, too, PS/2 is standard...

Well I think it isn't really a good idea to buy them... I'm going to use a
Linux-like OS and Win95, but to upgrade Win95 I probably have to buy a at
least $100 upgrade...

I have a DTC 3181e scsi controller. I have managed to get it partially
working with kernel 2.2.6, I just want to get the last bit.

Anyway, I did an pnpdump -c > /etc/isapnp.conf

The card detects and gets allocated

        irq=4
        addr=0x240

No problem. I then

        modprobe g_NCR5380 ncr_irq=4 ncr_addr=0x240 dtc_3181e=1

The 2 SCSI hards disks that I have attached get identified correctly (CDC,
312MB) and assigned to sda and sdb. Howver, the system the halts for a
while and a heap of error messages get shown (they scroll off the screen
before I can get them down). The last of these messages is

        SCSI disk error: host 0 channel 0 id1 lun 0 return_code 50000
        scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0
scsi0: warning: target bitmask 02 lun 0 not in disconnect_queue

When I search the g_NCR5380.c file, I find that this error seems to relate
to unsupported features of SCSI II. Since I am not a drivers guru, I do
not know what is going on.

Can any body help me to get the device working correctly (it works well
under DOS, I can partition and format the drive fine).

Thanks

Stu.

1. Find your local www.linuxberg.com mirror and go to servers under X11

2. Not yet, but if more people would complain to the manufacturers...
(Or reverse engineer a winmodem windows driver...)

I'm confused. I've got an ATI Xpert@Play 98 AGP, and it's strictly 2D.
I'm using the Mach64 X server with generic ATI chipset support.

Also have a 3D add-on board (Diamond Monster3d, IIRC) and got Mesa-GL and
Quake-III up with a little tweaking. (had to download and recompile Mesa).

Runs up to 1280x1024 at 32bpp, and 800x600 in 3D mode

I tested HP1100 (with GS filter ljet4) and got 5-6 pages/min for 300 dpi and
2-3 pages/min
for 600 dpi that is fine for my purposes. However I didn't find any
difference between GS5.50
and GS4.03. For 600 dpi I also noted the interruptions between pages. So
I'm going to buy
more memory. And here is my question. I have no any experience with printer
memory. Now
I have 2 Meg and I can get another 4 Meg for $12 only. Would it be enough to
note the difference
and, in particular, to remove interruptions between pages or I have to get
more (8 Meg for $64
is next and quite expensive option)? Thanks a lot.

I have a similar situation where I use a linux machine
with a 14 tape Quantum DLT tape robot to do daily incremental
backups of both unix machines via NFS, and and NT machines
        via samba.

In my case, two of the disk servers are 70GB raids, both
hovering at 90% full. One is an NT, one linux.
And a few other unix machines, a mixture of SGIs and linux.

It sounds like you don't mind 'rolling your own' backup script,
so you might want to investigate my technique.

I use gnutar to backup the NFS volumes, and samba smbclient(1)'s
tar abilities to get the NT server. This way all the data is
        backed up using tar archives.

The gnutar command line is basically:

            nice tar -c \
                -v \
                -f /dev/nst0 \
                --same-order \
                --new-volume-script ./next-tape \
                --label ${tapename}_${magazine_name} \
                --multi-volume \
                --one-file-system \
                --listed-incremental ./snapshot_${tapename}_${magazine_name} \
                $dirs >& $error_log

..and the smbclient command is (basically):

            nice smbclient //ntserver/files \
                $backup_passwd \
                -U $backup_user \
                -W $our_workgroup \
                -TbcS 20 /dev/nst0 ./next-tape $dirs >& $error_log

        Note: You won't see the smbclient 'S' flag in the man page;
I hacked that into smbclient so that I could tell it to run
my './next-tape' script to load the next tape when the end of
a tape is encountered. I need to publish the diff(1)s I made
so that other people can use that. I love open source ;)

But it doesn't sound like you have a tape robot to worry about,
so that's probably a non issue for you.

Also note: I found that gnutar has a subtle bug with
incrementals, where after a full backup is made, files that
are *renamed* are not caught in the incrementals. In our case,
this was a negligable enough problem, so we ignore it, but
anxiously await a fix from the gnu maintainers (I reported it
        in fall 98).

My backups script has alot of crap around the above commands
to make sure the directories are mounted, the tape is properly
positioned relative to the last time the script was run, keeping
track of which magazine/tape number, etc. Simple admin-y stuff.

If you want to roll your own, I can say the above has been working
for me the last 3 or 4 months now. And yes, we've had to do a few
restores, including a complete raid recovery 8^O which actually
        worked, thank god.

> [..] BRU [..]

Don't mess around with sendmail.cf. Have look at the .mc files:
activate in sendmail.mc

define(`confCON_EXPENSIVE, `True)dnl
define(`SMTP_MAILER_FLAGS, `e)dnl

FEATURE(`nocanonify)dnl
define(`confSERVICE_SWITCH_FILE, `/etc/service.switch)dnl

And /etc/service.switch:

hosts files
aliases files

Have a look into /usr/share/sendmail/ or locate cf.m4 or look at

or Mailverkehr mit Linux
