Hi , I've just installed linux (red hat 5) and I'm having problems with
Xwindows, the display jerks everytime I click on anything and the resolution
is quite small. I have an stb velocity video card (onboard)and I let xwindows
auto probe for the resolution and it seemed to work - no errors. The main
problem is I don't have a clue where to fidle with settings or whatever to
see if I can change this and I can't find anything in the docs to help me
start. If anyone can give me any pointers I'd be delighted

Subject: Problem with ZIP drive
Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 15:49:14 +0100

I posted a message before but didn't get any replies, so thought I'll try
again. I have an iOmega 100 external ZIP drive. I recently installed Red
Hat Linux 5.2 on my PC and the ZIP drive worked fine after the installation.
Then I upgraded the kernel to 2.2.2 and since then, I can't use the ZIP
drive under Linux. The HOWTO said to use imm driver instead of ppa and I
tried both as a module and load at boot. As a module, when I try to load
it, I get a message saying the device is busy or something like that. I
have another machine and it works fine on that. I tried configuring the
kernel identical to the working one but it still doesn't work. I have tried
everything I know. I also have Windoze NT on it and the drive works fine
with NT.

Does anybody know how I can solve this or even any suggestions that I can
try.

Thanks,
Manula.

You can get the latest linux drivers for Cyclades products from our tech
support page as well as NT and other operating systems. All Cyclades
products have a LIFETIME warranty and the Router products have a ONE YEAR
hot swap (loaner) program and free tech support.

We also have excellent pricing on the new Zoom wireless lan (and they are
working on linux drivers) as well as modems etc.

There is a rebate in effect for the Siemens 2420 Gigaset!

Also we have an excellent Y2K ODIU backup energy support system for all
platforms that employ any type of ODIU.

The problem here is that you are using the wrong driver. The Zip250
needs the IMM driver, not the ppa driver.

If you get the 2.2.x version of the kernel, the imm driver is included.

When you want that many you either buy special form factor cases and boards
or a plain 19" rack and mount several ATX rack-mountable boxes on it.

Very few parallel port scanners are supported under Linux since the
protocols to handle them are nonstandard and many time proprietary.
Given that, seach the internet for the "Sane" project which provides
scanner drivers and utilities for many (mostly scsi) scanners.

I'm not completely sure, but I think Linux does both. I.e. checking
after a fixed set of mounts, and after a fixed period of time. This is
f.ex. a dump of one of my filesystem:

Last mount time: Mon Apr 5 18:33:13 1999
Last write time: Sun May 2 20:23:44 1999
        Mount count: 4
        Maximum mount count: 20
        Last checked: Sun Apr 4 04:11:56 1999
        Check interval: 15552000 (6 months)
Next check after: Fri Oct 1 04:11:56 199

This means that if I remounted this filesystem on the 2nd of October,
it would check the filesystem... even though it hasn't yet reached
it's maximum mount count of 20.

I was looking through the HP site and found a firmware upgrade for these
tape drives.

I'm still using the 2.0.36 kernel and the tape drive would only store
400MB or 500 MB before it was full. After the upgrade I can put 3 full
backups of a 1.03GB file system and get about 1/2 way ghrough a 4th
before the tape fills up.

The upgrade needs MS-DOS to run, but everything needed fits onto a 1.44
Meg floppy so it isn't too big of a problem if one has an extra MS-DOS
OS layng around or the machine is dual boot.

Hello. I am having some problems with RedHat 5.2 and my new amd k6-2
400. After I installed the cpu, Linux will boot half way then give a
dump of the memory and registers. I am running kernel version 2.2.6 .
I though maybe the kernel was freaked out because of the new processor ,
but the same thing happens when I boot the install disk to reinstall. I
sometimes get a blue cursor at the bottom of the window right after the
install initializes the cdrom. I remember seeing some posts about
incompatibilities with some mboards and linux with k6-2 processors.
RedHat has a note on their HCL about some motherboards and k6-2
processors. They say you might have to keep the chip and replace the
motherboard. I am using an Iwill XA100 with an amibios ver 1.2 . If
anybody has a similar configuration and has gotten it to work I would
appreciate some info. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Subject: Help with Insatalling Red Hat 5.2 on Dell PowerEdge SP 5166
Date: 1 May 1999 13:52:28 +0100

Can help me out here, I have got a Dell PowerEdge server
SP 5166 Dual CPU.

I'm using Red Hat 5.2, when I am using the boot disk to boot
the machine I only get three dot's then the machine stops dead,
this also happens with Red Hat 5.1 too. I am able to load Red
Hat 5.0 OK.

Machine Spec:

CPU = 2 x 166
SCSI HD = 1 x 1GB
          2 x 2GB
          1 x 450GB
MEM = 128MB
Display = 1 x Vodoo 4MB

REgards
