I smoked a P90 because I had accidentally unplugged the CPU fan. If the noise
bothers you, go to a real audio shop get some tips on noise reduction. Or if
that fails get monitor, mouse, and keyboard extension cables and put the
computer
in your closet. ( I know this is not the best solution, but better than
removing
the fans!!!)

Hi and thanks,
I got sound yesterday by reading the documentation of this oss(free)-package
from 4front and installing it and it works. It seems to me that this oss is
comercial. When I configure the kernal with xconfig, I have to activate
oss-support, cause there's no generic Soundblaster-support. Is this special
for the SuSE6.1-kernal? Are there other (non commercial) drivers? What
kernal-sources do I have to use?
Thanks,
Andreas

I purchased OSS + Virtual Mixer for my SuSE 5.3 (2.0.35). It worked
quite OK for a couple of months, but now KMID typically plays into
one channel only. CD player and other sound programs play stereo.
/usr/lib/oss/mplay does work OK. Even KMID sometimes plays stereo,
after I repeatedly press Setup --> Yamaha ... (I have a CS....B).
Also in the process of doing "soundoff, soundconf, soundon" KMID
sometimes reported a segmentation fault ...!?
I tried the Windows-like IRQ, DMA settings and another set offered by
OSS
as default, both with and without Virtual Mixer enabled. Setup is OK
except that in all cases /usr/lib/oss/soundon.log warns of potential
IRQ conflicts. I think my two sets of IRQs are about the only ones
available.
How is it possible that it just quit working? I'm using KDE, but
played with fvwm2 recently and also run xmix in the process. I
don't remember doing any other silly things.
Is it possible to guess anything without my showing cat /dev/sndstat
etc.?
Thanks,
Rajmund

I just Installed Mandrake 5.3 ($1.89 from Linuxmall.com) and the install
went great, except for one thing, my sound.
When I type "kde", it gives me a bunch of "cannot connect to xserver"
messages for different sound modules, but I can type "startx" and it takes
me to kde and it works. So now I d/l oss drivers but it says I have to
recompile the kernel to take out the sound. When I recompile it, do I have
to put No for the "Enable sound" option? Also, will this fix the KDE
loading problems?

I'm not certain exactly what it is you're after, but I've got my old 486
running
as router/gateway/firewall. It's 16Mb, 486Dx2, 340Mb, no video, no
keyboard,
otherwise standard.
I used SuSE 5.3, kernel 2.0.36, plus the standard firewalling,
masquerading and
diald tools.
I read the HOWTOs, and spent perhaps a weekend getting it to work.
What I would call tiny would be if I powered up the old 386SX25 I've got
somewhere
and got Linux running on that - 2MB, no SIMMs. Not much point, though.

Hi,
we're trying to set up a backup system with a HP C1537A SCSI DDS-3 streamer
using the `dump' program. The problem is that a tape is full after
only about 40 MB have been written to it! I tried out the `d' switch
to pass the bit density to `dump' (342 MBit / inch for DDS-3), but it
tells me that this setting is invalid. The command line (without specifying
the bit density) looks like this:
salomon:~ # dump 0uf /dev/st0 /usr
DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Tue May 11 10:14:59 1999
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
DUMP: Dumping /dev/hda9 (/usr) to /dev/st0
DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
DUMP: estimated 561213 tape blocks on 14.43 tape(s).
^^^^^ this is about 40 MB / tape!
salomon:~ # df -k

Sorry, and thanks for the correction. I was thinking of it only from
the MBR standpoint. I think that I read in the LILO readme, though,
that this was my only option, as there was only one partition on hda,
which was dos, and linux resided on hdb. Did I misunderstand this?
Could I put LILO somewhere other than the MBR?
But anyway, I got it to work finally, so I'll quit messing with it.

I had it on 0x134 and could not for the life of me get it to

everything worked sweetly !

I am still utterly baffled. I hooked this new modem up to my laptop,
running the same version of Linux (RedHat 5.2), and it came up and worked
first try. So the only thing different between one machine where it works
and another where it doesn't is the machine itself.
My main machine -- I've even ripped open the machine and swapped / reseated
the cables from the card edge connectors to the motherboard, still
nothing. I am NOT running plug-and-play or any of that, and the ports are
recognized by setserial to be set up just like in the BIOS. What have
I missed? This is driving me crazy!

Greetings:
I have an old 8-bit SMC/WD 10T ethernet card that I'm trying to get
configured in my system to no avail. I've read the ethernet howto and
various postings which indicate that I should be using the wd8003 driver
(the chip on my card is the 83c690). I've recompiled the kernel to
include the SMC/WD network device drivers, but the card is still not
recognized at boot. I've also tried passing parameters to the kernel
based on how my card is configured (I know the configuration for
positive as I ran SMC's utility, ezsetup, from a dos boot disk which saw
the card just fine.) The string I'm passing LILO is
"linux ether=7,0x2A0,0xC000,0xC8000,eth0" (card configured on IRQ 7, RAM
0C8000, I/O 2A0) I suppose it's possible I don't have the kernel
parameter syntax quite right, in which case I'll need some help with
that.
Anyway, does anyone out there have ideas on how I can fix my problem?
Thanks,
Andy
PS. I'm running redhat linux 5.2 on a P90 with 16M of memory

I'm using an Ensoniq AudioPCI on RH5.1. sndconfig idents it as a PnP
Soundblaster and lists five choices: Sound Blaster, SB Pro, SB16, SB
32, and SB 64. (On the MS NT4.0 side, it thinks it's an Ensoniq
AudioPCI , 6600h-IRQ 10 and works fine.) I'm guessing that 6600h means
0x660, but there is no such choice for any of the given Soundblasters.
Likewise, I have no clue about 8-bit/16-bit DMA settings.
/proc/interrupts has no entry for IRQ 10, so no conflicts. BTW, on my
other machine running RH5.2, sndconfig found my old Sound Blaster card
and passed the audio test (Torvald's pronunciation of Linux).
