Those cards are not necessary. I have a Tyan Tiger2 (lx dual board)
that didnt come with one, it autodetects one or two cpu's. Runs fine
without the dummy card. Another computer I just finished building
for a friend was based on a supermicro p6dbu, again no dummy card.
Worked fine with one or two cpu's.

BTW: P6DBU works nicely with 2xcelery300A@450, had to go 2.2V by
modifying the slocket(Abit RS370a), but all works well. RC5 puts
out about 2.5Mkeys/sec on it, compared to my 1.66Mkeys/s on my
2x300A tiger2 board. Its all scsi based, and is extremely fast,
9.1G U2W HD, 8x4x Panasonic CD-R (7502B) scsi, scsi Zip. Only
thing wrong is Its running NT, but thats only because its being
used for Maya, 3ds, Flash, Char. Studio and other graphix apps.

I have a Diamond Viper 330 adapter running the SVGA server. I really want to
be able to run at least 1280x1024 under XF86, which SVGA server apparently
will not do.

What widely available (and not too pricey) PCI boards will run a more
capable server for X?

Thanks,

Before you buy anything, you might want to check out the free

I am using a K6-2 400MHz on a ASUS P5A-B Mainboard. Its very pretty
running LINUX. The only drawback is the onboard sound card, which driver
is difficult to setup.
Pentium II has more FPU capacity, good for games and scientific
applications, but the rest is almost the same.

From: Stephen Quattlebaum <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: CMI8330 Soundblaster and isapnp - a question

I'm trying to get my CMI8330 on-board sound chip to work in Linux. The
driver documentation, however, gives a sample isapnp.conf that is
drastically differnt from what my pnpdump reported (I don't just mean
IO/DMA/IRQ - I mean a completely differnt number and numbering of logical
devices). I'm no PnP expert, so this may be normal. I have managed to
isolate which devices appears to be which from looking at the resource
requirements, but now I'm stuck. So, I have a few questions for whoever
may have tread this route before...

1) Are there several versions of the CMI8330? As I said, my logical
device numbers were different from the numbers of the person who wrote the
documentation.

2) I'm not very knowledgable on sound hardware; I believe that the uart401
and mpu drivers are support drivers, and that of the interfaces to the
CMI8330, I only need one of WSS or SB. Am I correct? (by the way,
uart401 and the mpu drivers load with no errors with only an insmod (no
parameters), but I don't know if that means anything). Also, why does the
documentation mention ad1848? Is this an adlib interface?

3) I set up the sb interface (I believe it's teh sb interface; it has a
preferred io address of 0x220 which is a big clue) to 0x220, irq's 5 and
9, dma's 0 and 7 (all of which are in range according to pnpdump, and all
of which just happen to be the card's Windows settings as well). However,
when I try to insmod, (or modprobe) I get a message that the device is
busy. (I did give the proper command line arguments and set up my
modules.conf file correctly). /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports both
report taht these settings are not being used by another device, and a
scan of my isapnp.conf reveals taht no other devices are being set up to
use those numbers. So, does nayone know why the device might be busy?
(As a side note, I tried inserting at 0x200 wit hthe same other settings,
without setting up the card to expect 0x200, and the error was different;
the module loaded but couldn't probe IRQs. I of course didn't expect that
to work, but the fact that the module loaded at a wrong address but won't
load at the address that the card is configured for might be sueful).

Please pardon my bad typing; I'm on a slow connection through pine.

Thanks for your help. Maybe I can get this figured out before I have to
just buy an external modem so I can fit my old soundblaster (which does
work for sure) onto the system board :-)

It ends up this was a problem with a Differential drive vs. a Single-Ended
(SE) SCSI card issue. I did try two different cables and two different SCSI
cards before figuring this one out. Not to mention lots of bios reconfigs.

The Quantum DLT4000 (Differential version) likes the Adaptec AHA-2944UW
SCSI card and can use the 294x kernel module stuff. I love it when it
works!

I agree that all OSes are somewhat idiotic. Almost everything is built by one one
vendor sent to the customer as a giant piece of code.

I would be nice if an OS could be broken into several major components that
follow the specifications. Each component could then be developed by a different
company. Finally, all the components could be stitched together to form an OS.
This is the way hardware is built. Why not software too?

No not wide negotiation

On some of the older cards I have you can set things (say on an adaptec)
like individual speeds for each id

so you could have
>>id0 40mbs sync
>>id1 40mbs async
>>id4 10mbs sync
etc
all the way down

Can you not do this with the card you have ???

This is OK but I think the use of os/2 among desktop users is on the
decline (it certainly isn't increasing). Don't get me wrong, I've used os/2
since 1.3 and I still have it on one of my machines and I like it but I
find that, as the months pass, I use it less and less.

Saying that gnome is trying to be what os/2 already is, while perhaps true
(and it's doubtful), isn't going to cause anyone to switch to os/2. Also,
just because an interface has a high degree of "oo-ness" isn't going to
make me change my mind about it. I'm not flaming you and I do like os/2 but
for desktop users it's rapidly falling off the radar screen (if it hasn't
passed from view completely already). I'm very close to removing os/2 to
have more space for Linux, something I would not have thought about 2 or 3
years ago. The development of gnome will continue, for os/2 I can't say
(except for the server poduct perhaps).

I thought SOM was a separate technology that IBM no longer supports (if I
remember correctly)? IBMs orb is called something else entirely, isn't it
(Component Broker)?

As shipped from Intel Celerons are intentionally crippled for purposes of dual
processor support by any OS or application.. Some PPGA -> slot1 adapter cards
handle it and there are manual modifications documented:
   http://www.anandtech.com/html/review_display.cfm?document=914
but without one of these you are only using 1 of the two processors.
