Subject: Adaptec 2940UW PCI problem
Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 15:51:55 -0400

I installed RedHat v5.2 and ran into a problem with an adaptec 2940UW pci
board. At bootup I get the following message:

scsi: aborting command due to timeout: pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0,
test unit ready 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting

This message comes up continually with long pauses on the order of a minute

Additional NOTES:

1. RedHat is actually installed on an IDE drive with 1.2GB
2. There are three SCSI devices on the computer:
     Seagate ST19171W 9GB internal drive
     Ricoh CD-RW MP 6200S
     ZIP 100

   TIA,

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have an old Digital TK50Z tape drive which I need to get working with
Linux. Am using Slackware + kernel 2.0.27 with SCSI tape compiled in.
Linux recognizes the drive as /dev/nst0 on boot up but will not detect
a loaded tape or respond to other mt commands. Question is:

1. Does anyone have this combination (TK50+Linux) working?
2. Where can I get a TK50 SCSI command/message definitions?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

I'm looking for an Ink Jet printer that uses separate ink cartridges for
color (I'm tired of having to replace a good color cartridge on my Epson
cause one color has run out.) that is low cost. (Wish I could find one
under $200) I'm looking at the Canon BJC-6000. Does anyone know if this
will work with Linux? If so, do you like the speed and output?

BTW, is there another color Inkjet that uses separate cartridges for the
colors that you might recommand?

Hello,
Yes, http://ruff.cs.jmu.edu/~beetle/ragefury.htm : they are right!

It WORKS !

But there is 2 littles imprecisions.

1) When they say:

    tar zxvf ...
    mv XF68_FBDev.libc6 /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev

you must add:

    chmod +x /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev

2) The XF86Config they give seems to be bad.

The best thing is to use the XF86Config you made with Xconfigurator, even
with a wrong server, but with good mouse, monitor, and so on.

Then you must add these lines:

# Frame Buffer server

Section "Screen"
    Driver "FBDev"
    Device "My Video Card"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    Subsection "Display"
        Modes "default"
    EndSubsection
EndSection

To make these line, start from another server (vga, svga...), and modify the
Driver line, and respect the names of your Device and your Monitor. Also,
the subsection Display should only contains Modes "defaut".

I succedeed with Red Hat 6.0 : kernel 2.2.5.

Of course you cannot zoom (does it matter).

If you want another resolution than 1024x768 you must choose something else
than VGA=791 in /etc/lilo.conf

Let me know, if you succeed. (and other values than 791, i want 1152x864,
which is ok on a good 17").

Good Bye and good luck !

1) as someone else sugested, try making sure the card is not in PnP mode.
there are dos utils for this on 3com's web site, and linux utils at
   http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux

2) win98 sometimes "hides" cards, moving them to bizzare io addresses that
aren't normally probed, and stores the new locations in the registry.
this has the effect of hiding the card from all other os's. a full,
cold reboot should fix this if this is the case.

these cards work fine under RedHat 5.9 and 6.0, which contain the
3.3.3.1 version of the XFree86 SVGA server. didn't own this card when i
was running 5.2, so i can't say whether it worked or not.

Assuming the hardwars *is* identical, you could always plug the clone's
Harddisk in to the "master" computer, then assuming the master is disk
hda, and the clone is hdb, you could *probably* do:

dd < /dev/hda > /dev/hdb
e2fsck /dev/hdb1 ....

It is a bit risky, so a better way to do it would be to set up the clone
disk partitions to be close on the master, and then do ....

hang on. The best idea would be to build a system correctly. then remove
it's drive and use it as the master source. Install this in the "cloning
machine" (transmogrifyer). Install the clone's disk as well.

Assuming there are three disks in the cloning machine now, the machine's
root filesystem, the master disk, and the clone disk.

you should probably be able to do the:

dd < /dev/hdb > /dev/hdc
... followed by e2fsck

This will probably sort out lilo as well ;-)

try it, I guess.

So, since you only have two disks, I would mount a "rescue" system
(normally a kernel with a root filesystem in ramdisk)

check that you have dd available.

Then copy the disks

Umm... I hate to tell you this, Scott, but lots of companies now are running
linux-only businesses... and a LOT of the major apps that business corporations
use are being ported to linux. EG: Oracle, DB2, Corel WordPerfect (just because
it helps with end-user productivity) StarOffice (which can read and write to M$
formats) and in the event that there ISN'T the type of program that you're
looking for under linux, there is almost a guarantee that there's at least a
win3.1 version. In that case it's a simple matter to install Wabi and/or use
Wine to run the "Windows-Only" apps that businesses need. Also.... IMHO
businesses that are smaller should be using linux simple because of the low
overhead and cost of running a linux-only business. And why does asking "why do
you want to remove linux?" make someone a freak? If somebody asks "Why do you
want to remove Windows?" do you think that they are a freak? Just a bit to
think about.... no hard feelings.

Somebody just asked this question in one of the Sun hardware and
the Linux hardware newsgroups just a day or so ago. If you search
http://www.deja.com, you should find out more information that
I posted earlier.

A cable company, http://www.ultraspec.com offers a small unit
for connecting Sun type 5C keyboards to a PC. It costs US $130.00.

There may be others.

One question is whether your IDE interface is capable of accessing this
large a drive. The newer EIDE will, but I'm not sure about the limitations
of the older IDE. If the interface will support this drive, then RH5.1 will
most likely also.

You'll probably have to go into Linux fdisk's 'expert' mode and set the
geometry to the correct value before it will let you create partitions above
cylinder 1024.

Ironically, this so-called 'high-end' card is not supported under Linux.
The much cheaper Diva2.0 card, however, is supported.

I've got the Pro as well, and I guess we'll just have to wait until
someone writes a driver for it.

If you give me more info I could probably help you out. This soundcard is an utter
headache to set up. The most important thing IMO is getting the latest isapnptools
and using the configure script that comes with it. Doing the pnpdump -configure; or
whatever. Make sure that you set up the SB logical device to 0x230 or 0x240, it
seems that if you set it to 0x220, the kernel wants to use that (which is 8 bit
only) rather than the Microshaft Sound System that lurks at 0x530 (which is the one
you want to use with this card). This card forces an either/or situation with these
two logical devices.

If you want the whole scoop - read on.

this is how my isapnp is configed:

  (IO 0 (SIZE 16) (BASE 0x0230)) #soundblaster logical device
  (IO 1 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x0530)) #Microshaft Sound System
  (IO 2 (SIZE 4) (BASE 0x0388)) #OPL3 Synthesizer
  (IO 3 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0330)) #401 Midi
  (IO 4 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0370)) #OPL3-SA3
  (INT 0 (IRQ 9 (MODE +E)))
  (DMA 0 (CHANNEL 1))
  (DMA 1 (CHANNEL 3))

just make sure that you do a full pnpdump and uncomment out lines like these, also
if you read the docs with isapnp, you would know to uncomment out (ACT Y) - which
activates your selections

now on to the conf.modules

alias sound opl3sa2
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options opl3sa2 io=0x370 mss_io=0x530 irq=9 dma=1 dma2=3

Well, that's how I did it. I even have the joystick port and the ide controller
working.
But thats another story. Hope this helps.

I hate to tell you this Chris but only very small companies run a

bigger ones will go for AIX. Depending on their need and what they can

Hmmm... have same hardware - using xf86config and specifing SVGA I now
have my desktop in 240x300 mode ( way big - no good) but... Doom runs fine.
one suggestion I got was to try the cntl-alt-+and - to shift modes, but no
joy there. There has to be a desktop specific control I have wrong, but I
haven't figured it out yet
