Subject: Problem with HPNetserver LH3's NetRaid Controller and Linux

Hi there.
I have a HP Netserver LH3 with a HP NetRaid Controller .... I tried to
install SuSe Linux 6.1 on it ... I booted from the CD and then selected
the Ami MegaRaid SCSI Module to be loaded .... all went well .. the
module saw both my logical drives the 4GB Raid0 on Channel 0 for the /
and the 17GB Raid5 on Channel 1 ... I installed the system .. all went
well ... then I compilied a suitable kernel with the Ami MegaRaid
compiled in ... then I restarted and the SCSI driver only saw channel 0
with the 4GB Raid0 drive ... not the channel 1 .... but when I boot from
cd and select the Ami MegaRaid module to be loaded then it detects both
channels ...
anyone knows this behavior? anyone has a solution?

Subject: Which modem to take
Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 14:41:49 -0400
I'm looking seriously at a particular laptop which comes with a choice of
modems and am having trouble getting a straight answer as to whether the
modems that are offered are WinModems or will work under Linux. I've
looked at the "Winmodems are not Modems" page and its list of usable and
unusable modems, and some of these have question marks.
The three modems are:
Psion Gold Card Global 56Kflex PCMCIA
3COM Megahertz 56K Global Modem PC Card: model # cc1560i, which has a
question mark next to it
3COM 10/100 LAN+56K Modem CardBus PC Card: model #3ccfem656
If nobody has installed one of these, what should I be looking for in the
documentation for these modems?
Thanks

Is it possible to get this working? If so, what would I use for a driver?

Well, first you have to figure out what it is that the "modem" wants--
ie ports, commands, etc to control the modem. (No info from
manufacturer). Then you have to impliment all of themodem stuff in
software. Then you have to figure out how to get all that timing
critical stuff out under a multitasking, multiuser operating system, so
that the OS does not swap out the modem driver at just the wrong time.
Then you discover that although this works for your modem, for the next
verion of yours it does not work, and it also does not work for any
other manufacturer;s modem either.
Note that the voice feature of modems is more standard, but there is no
good voice software. vgetty seems to have terminally bit the dust.

Here is the complete (?) set of files related to sound, also by Windows,
written in the form of a, well, status report.
Please see below after the quoted answer by Rob (thanks).
BTW, while I was posting this (starting the modem), KMIDI was playing
but I heard all sorts of noises from modem. Then things settled down.
But KMIDI is somewhere in the background starting various songs while
I'm writing this, and it's not in loop mode. Joke?
[The attachment was the result of netscape's lack of file insert. Now
I managed with cut and paste. Even seen a Vax? Never mind.]

PROBLEM: Strange behavior od MIDI players, especially KMID. After
several soundconf's and reinstallation of OSS the following status
emerged:
SHORT SUMMARY:
I suspect KMID is broken, but there may be genuine interrupt
problems.
OSS only uses IRQ 5, 7 while Windows lists 5, 10, 11 for sound.
There may be kernel version incompatibility (see version.txt below).
MORE DETAIL:
Netscape MIDI (Hoff) plugin works.
KMIDI plays OK (stereo) but it does not play all files (some are
just
silent; some of these are played by KMID).
KMIDI volume is on the "pcm" KMIX channel.
KMID plays more files than KMIDI, but sometimes in one channel (left
or right) only. Repeatedly pressing Setup and possibly selecting
different midi maps will switch between left and right and possibly
even start playing stereo.
KMID is rather loud compared with CD player or KMIDI, with the same
KMIX settings, and its volume is set by the "synth" channel, not
"pcm".
Mouse noise is very pronounced.
I'm quite sure I picked the right OSS version from the Web page.
But the files inside don't really mention 2.0.35.
FILES:
SuSE 5.3 Linux and Windows sound-related files follow.
devices.cfg:

NOTE: Both of these work the same: they differ in 534 vs. 530
for the first I/O address (534 is Windows-like, see end of

I have had that error.
My problem was my disk drive cables. Windows covers up many of these types
of problems (Until you finally get a fat corruption error that is).
I also had it using cheap EIDE drives. It is hard to catch. If you have
DMA33 drives, I suggest you get the newer 80 pin cables (Required for DMA66
drives). There not expensive (about 9 bucks) and I can testify that they are
effective.
Good Luck.

The price should be a tip-off to what you are getting. A USR Winmodem can be
found for anything from $39-$69 or so. A non-Winmodem is going to cost you $99+
unless you get really lucky. you can do some homework before you buy at

Hi,
this is a color printer, but I can't even print b&w.
Any suggestions on how to access it?
(I know - I probably should have bought another printer :( )

Subject: Re: IBM ServerRaid Linux Support & Netfinity Support

Count me in the group of people who are trying to get an IBM Netfinity
5500 workin with Linux. Using RedHat 5.2 and trying to get the RAID 5
SCSI controller to be detected. The AIC7xxx.o module is supposed to
work with the AIC7880 chipset (which the Netfinity 5550 has), but I
have had no luck in it even acknowledging that the controller exists.
If anyone has some leads on this, please pass it my way. I'm going to
try and reconfigure the controller not to use RAID and see if it helps
(doubt it...).
I see that RedHat touts using Netfinity Servers, now where's their
support?
