I'm purchasing a system that comes with an MSI MS-5169 motherboard,
which uses an Aladdin-5 M1531/M1543 chipset. It will have a K6-2/400
CPU.
One of the changes in Linux 2.3.1 listed at LinuxHQ is "IDE ALI M15x3
chipset support added" which worries me a bit since it implies that
this cipset is not supported in previous kernel versions (which I will
use).
Does anyone know if Linux 2.2 supports this chipset? Am I worried for
no reason?
Thanks for any help. CC your reply to my email address if possible.
Regards,
Carl.

Hi,
I have the ati 128 fury and i could configure it with FBDev (and kernel
2.2.5, RedHat 6)
I think the 0317 value is when you answer to the lilo prompt (when vga=ask)
This is in hexa.
But in /etc/lilo.conf you must put it in decimal: 791
Here are other values:
Colors 800x600 1024x768
16bits 0314 (788) 0317 (791)
24bits 0315 (789) 0318 (792)
And look at mini-howto for vesa
Good luck

You should be able to do a control-alt-F1 (or F2 through F6) to get into
the shell. X will still be running (and you can get back to it by doing
control-alt-F7) and you can kill it several different ways. I've never
personally installed xdm (which is what I presume what you're using) but
I would think you could kill it by doing "killall xdm" or just do "ps
aux" and "kill" all the things that look like they have to do with X.
As for actually stopping it before it starts, that depends on your
distribution, but try looking in .bash_profile in your home directory
and /etc/profile.

use -sOutputFile=/path/to/file%03d
which will give you page numbered files, numbered from the current
startup session. You can then 'cat file | lpd' to print them.

If you don't have any luck installing the supplied drivers, then check
out the drivers available for Creative Labs supplied by Open Sound at
www.opensound.com
I have a Soundblaster 128PCI - their driver works fine on my system,
though admittedly it's RedHat 5.1. I don't know if they have released
anything for RH 6.0 yet, but check out www.opensound.com (yes I've just
repeated myself).

Dear helpers, Monday 17 May 1999.
My CD ROM player not on the install list. It is a brand "IMES" Model
ICD-900/AT manufactured by IMES Co, Ltd, Kanagawa-Ken, Japan.
My son has used UNIX and LINUX for years and is helping me install it
on my system. From a CD ROM InfoMagic Linux June 1998. This one of
four discs is SLACKWARE. I am trying to install from SLACKWARE.ZIP but
can't recognise the CD ROM player.
We tried "BARE.I" first then he forced a PROBE but no success.
Is my CD player under another name? Could save a few hours.
Thanks in anticipation.

and run Linux on it. Will work with a Sun keyboard for sure :)

There was a known problem in the SCSI support on the default boot disk
for Red Hat 5.2, and there was a link and a fix posted here some time
back. You might find it worth your while to do a Deja.com search on
"2940UW" in the "*linux*" newsgroups.

As long as it's not a Winmodem, there should be no problems. I have
a Silicom Multimedia V.90 PC Card modem (not exactly a household name)
which works well Red Hat 5.2 and Slackware 3.6. Just make sure that
PCMCIA support is started on boot up. Good luck!

Three months ago I got a dual SuperMicro MB and case, along with two PII
400s and 256 megs of 100mhz RAM. Cost for the components was about
$1200US. I imagine you could get the same gear for around $1000US now
(if not lower). Installation of the components was easy, and the system
has performed flawlessly: with kernel 2.2.x SMP, performance is
excellent.
Hope this helps,
Doug

Well, I run X-CD-Roast on FVWM X-windows on Red Hat 5.2 with no
problems. I downloaded the RPM and it virtually set up itself. I have
Ricoh MP6200s (scsi) on an Advansys ISA card.
It runs beautifully in X-CD-Roast, as well as Adaptec's Easy CD Creator
(Win9x). The only problem (and I really haven't tried to solve it yet)
is that Roast doesn't realize that my ATAPI CD-ROM (36x USDRIVE) can
extract Audio files.
Try Roast, it can be downloaded at www.linuxberg.com .

Unless your ROM BIOS has a specific option for booting SCSI before IDE, it will
try to boot from the IDE drive. The only solution is to disable the IDE drive
in the ROM BIOS as Linux, once booted, will find the drive.
