i'm a recreational macuser, that is to say double-click, no command line type
of guy, who wants to grow up and learn linux
i would like to get an inexpensive/moderately priced laptop pc (i have not
been able to install linuxppc on my performa 6400, so it's time to buy new
computer, i guess) and run linux on it, perhaps dual linux/windows,
i read that certain components should be avoided because their manufacturers
keep their interface configuration proprietory(whatever that is),
also, that one should avoid a winmodem(which is what?)
please, advise me how to proceed
thanks,

Subject: HP 8100i IDE CDRW problems.
Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 10:27:40 -0600
I am having a heck of a time trying to get CD writing going on my RedHat 5.2 running a
2.0.36-3
kernel. From reading various README's and HOWTO's, I have the following understanding:
* I need to run "SCSI emulation" to run cdrecord and the way to do that is with the
following
line in /etc/lilo.conf 'append="hda=ide-scsi"', (my CDRW is an IDE configured as
primary
master) and reboot.
The above understanding is based on the following assumptions:
* My kernel is new enough that I don't need any patches.
* My kernel has the "ide-scsi" driver.
* By specifying the line 'append="hda=ide-scsi"' in lilo.conf I am telling the
kernel to load the
driver module ide-scsi at boot time and use it for the hda device.
Miscellany:
* I've also heard that I need to compile the driver into the kernel but haven't
overcome my fear
of make config yet so I haven't done that yet. Is this really necessary?
* My cdrom needs to be configured primary master. Is this true?
My questions:
* Why does a "/opt/schily/bin/cdrecord -scanbus" not list my HP CDRW? It lists my
scsi stuff (2
hard drives and a scsi cdrom) and a bunch of asterisks but no IDE stuff.
* Why does a "/opt/schily/bin/cdrecord -scanbus" not list my HP CDRW but when I run
'xcdroast &'
and go to the "SCSI-IDE" section it lists my HP CDRW (albeit only gives the
option of setting
it as a data READER in Setup)?
* Do I really need to get my hands dirty with "make config" and compile the driver
'ide-scsi'
(assuming I have it) into the kernel?
* If my assumption that "ide-scsi" is a driver is correct, why does 'ide-scsi' not
appear in my
lsmod output after I reboot?
* If my assumption that "ide-scsi" is a driver is correct, why does 'ide-scsi' not
appear in the
output from the 'modprobe -l | grep 'scsi' | more' command?
* What is the line 'append="hda=ide-scsi"' actually telling lilo to do.
* How do I confirm that I have the "ide-scsi" driver.
Need help bad, if I don't solve soon I may be stuck with a laptop that doesn't run
linux.
Thanks.

I have one. It works if I compile mpu401 support statically into
the kernel along with the right IO address and IRQ. I haven't made
it work right as a module, which isn't to say that it can't be done.
kmid works great for me. Other midi players I've tried (playmidi,
kmidi) have problems with my SB16 + SCC-1 setup. (kmidi doesn't
work at all, while playmidi uses the SB16 regardless of what I do
with the -D option.) Test with kmid to see whether you have a true
kernel sound driver problem or just a broken midi player.

I used to work for Chromnatic that designed the mPacts - sadly Chromatic
died
last year and there won't be any more support - they were designed for
DOS based systems - their VGA emulation runs partially as code in a
DOS/Win environment which means that sadly they wont run under Linux
without major work that just isn't going to happen now that Chromatic
is dead
sorry

I didn't get all the way through the responses to your question, but
here's my response. Actually, in most cases, the fan itself doesn't make
that much noise. The noise is produced by the air movement. So slowing
down the fan will reduce the noise (usually). Also, most CPU fans I have
encountered produce very little noise.
So, what I would do is reduce the voltage to the fan in the power supply
(you can probably do this by powering it from the 5 volt supply rather
than the 12 volt supply). I would disconnect/remove the CPU fan
(assuming you have a fairly large heat sink). Then remove the case and
replace it with a screen. If the computer is out in the open where air
can freely flow around it, it will probably stay cool enough.
One last comment, I would spin down the disk drives when not in use (you
mentioned that you know how to do this). Also, I would check the
temperature of the processor periodically at first. If the processor
gets hot, reinstall the CPU fan.
If you go to a faster processor, or some of the new high RPM disks, all
bets are off.

You can try to use the VESA driver in the latest svgalib version. It works
quite well (even if rather slowly) with my Millenium II.

For some reason, my networking setup isn't working anymore. I'm running
Redhat 5.2, with a NE2000 PCI card plugged into my DSL (Basically a
CISCO router) and it used to accept the DHCP packages fine, but now
whenever it boots, it states it is "delaying eth0 initilization" and
when I go into Network Config, I find the device inactive... Whenever I
try to start it by activating it, it doesn't actually activate. Any
ideas??? I really need some help! Thanks in advance,

I am using my USR Sportster 56K Data/Fax external modem with Red Hat
6.0. It works, and although it claims to be connecting at 38000 (best
speed on my crappy phone lines), the download rates rarely exceed 500
bytes/sec.
I have been trying to build a new init string to solve this problem,
without success. Has anyone ever configured this modem for Linux? Any
advice?
Also, if I wanted to get an internal PCI modem, what would be a good
choice?

Get the FIC. VIA support in Linux is more mature.
