Hello audio types!
I just bought a Yamaha XG sound card, pci style, that uses the YFM724F-V
chip. On reading the fine print, this thing is beginning to sound like
a winmodem! Midi is supported, but not the synth unless you are running
some flavor of M$ drivers.
Since this is a fairly close to stock RH5.2 install, is there any hope
of being able to use this thing in its full duplex modes, or as a self
contained GM device?
If not, I guess it goes back to the store in the morning, and replaced
with an AWE 64, but thats a much pricier solution than I want just for a
little background music.
Cheers, Gene

It sounds like it, possibly bad memory. But then again, the SuSE
installer sux so bad that after 6 tries on a system that runs RH5.2 with
new X flawlessly, I took it back to the bookstore and got my money back.

Subject: Linux won't boot with network card
Date: 26 May 1999 04:13:26 GMT
I have setup a few linux boxes (Slackware) without problem. Now I got an old
machine and have trouble to install linux. This is a 386sx with 8 meg ram
and 128 meg HD. without an ISA network card (ne2000 clone), I can use
bootdisk, bare.i, to boot the machine with linux. However, it hangs during
booting if I put an NIC ne2000 clone in the box. The NIC works well in all
other 5 linux boxes and also in the 386sx under DOS. I have tried different
settings of I/O address and IRQ, and had no success.
Linux hangs when it detected the HD, i.e.
hda: QUANTUM ELS127A, 122 MB w/32kB Cache, CHS=919/16/17
Could someone to help me on this problem? Linux is not very useful without
an NIC in the box.
Thank you,
yue

Try the last version of XFree (I think is the 3.3.3.1).

You should write whether this is SCSI or IDE.
Assuming this is IDE, run:
dmesg |egrep ^hd
and find what device is your cd-rom:
/dev/hdb or /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd, let's assume it is hdc
Login into root account.
Than try to access it :
cat /dev/hdc > /dev/null
Is your CD-ROM LED flashing? If so check the symbolic link:
ls -al /dev/cdrom
Does it point to /dev/hdc ?
Do you have autofs installed? If so make:
cd /misc/cd
ls -al
Works?
If not:
mount /mnt/cdrom
ls -al /mnt/cdrom
Does it work? If not:
What errors are reported to /var/log/messages ?
What dmesg command returns?
Is your CD-ROM disc in standard format? Best try it with
Linux installation CD-ROM.

Jacek

Hello,
I've heard that there were no more drivers for the TEKRAM SCSI adaptators in
the 2.2.x kernels ? Is it exact ? Is it possible to use another driver safely ?
What would you buy as an UW adaptator to use with both 2.0.35 and 2.2.x kernels
?

First down rev the kernel to something between 2.2.5 and 2.2.9. 2.3.x
is the development tree.
Second, publish at minimum your kernel .config file and dmesg output.
Should have CONFIG_APM=y and CONFIG_APM_POWER_OFF=y in .config.

The Best Data "Smart One" (56SF) looks like a good choice - $55 from
buy.com. Verify at http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/19990525a.html.

Subject: Re: IBM 22 GByte hard disk
I have that drive's poor second cousin. You should be in the same
range.
# hdparm -tT /dev/hdf1
/dev/hdf1:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 64 MB in 0.59 seconds =108.47 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 2.54 seconds =12.60 MB/sec
Check BIOS set to LBA, and these in .config:
CONFIG_PCI=y
CONFIG_PCI_OPTIMIZE=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_TRITON=y
I predefined the drive as an append statement in /etc/lilo.conf as
'hdf=1757,255,63' based on my non-expert understanding of linux drive
sizing and UDMA disks. Basically took the total LBA count and fit it
into the linux C/H/S large drive model of maximizing heads and sectors.
# hdparm -i /dev/hdf
/dev/hdf:

LBAsects=C*H*S
28229040 = n * 255 * 63
n = 28229040 / 255 * 63
n = 1757
stuck that definition in lilo as append="hdf=1757,255,63". Also set
BIOS to 'LBA'. On boot I get these references to EIDE drives (440BX

Subject: Problems with signals from kernel
Hello,
i am trying to send a signal (SIGUSR2) from a device driver for a ISA
Card (module) to
a user process with the system function send_sig(). The user process has
installed a signal handler and it works well, if the signal is send from
the console. But sending it from the device driver doesnt work. The
signal never reachs its target process. The signal flags in the task
struct arent changed. Any ideas? (2.0.35 kernel).
greetings

Try Zoltrix...
The model I have and works great is VoiceFax 56KVSP...
Here in Argentina it costs about $30. I suppose you can get it a bit cheaper...

Subject: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller 2/SC And Linux
Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 06:14:41 GMT
Our company is planning on buying a Dell PowerEdge 2300 server
as a linux server. Dell Poweredge 2300 server is a redhat 6.0 linux
certified system, but the certified system is without a raid-controller.
If anyone has any experiance or knowledge whether the
Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller 2/SC works with linux or not I
would like to know about it. Here's the url for specification sheet
of the raid controller - http://support.dell.com/oti/storage/perc2sc/
thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this problem!
