Just be cautious about warranty issues with Iomega. If the drive
fails and you can't test the drive on a M$ system while being online
with them they may simply say that there is no warranty for you. I
was in that situation a week ago. If you want to inquire about
warranty issue and Iomega you can contact them at:
Iomega <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Jennifer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Here is the first human reply I have had from them since I started
warning Iomega Linux users about the warranty issues over a week ago.
Many Linux users wrote to Iomega about this issue. This is the only
way to change Iomega perception about Linux.
Cheers,
Dominic.

Running fancy desktops like gnome and kde can be the cause of your
problems, in my case it was just that (ok, my configuration is not
state of the art, only 40 Mb RAM).
At your X-server prompt choose something else than KDE or gnome.
See if things are still slow in a failsafe session using twm or fvwm
as windowmanager. I don't know much about KDE but Linux with gnome is
just a slow version of windows, good if the only thing you want do is
some text processing but even that quite slow. I had the same problem
with mpeg_play and xanim. I needed them to display 512x512 animations
on a laptop, but the frame rate was very low, once I got rid of the
desktops the speed became optimal.

If you're looking for low cost RAID 1,take a look at the DupliDisk
Direct from Arco - http://www.arcoide.com/direct.htm . It's designed
for use in full tower systems and doesn't require any drivers so it
works out of the box with Linux or NT.

I have the same setup and did not have to recompile kernel
I did this (sorry, I'm not at home so I don't remember the filenames or
directory paths):
1] delete the /etc/printcap file
1a] delete all of the files/directories in /var/spool/lpd (i.e. the old
spool directories)
2] copy the upp (or is it uup ) files to the correct directory
3] copy the filter script to the correct directory ( do not copy the
printerdb file)
4] go to directory where the RH6 printerdb file is.
5] edit the RH6 printerdb file. Find the Epson Uni drivers (mine was at the
very end)
6] make a copy of one of the lines and replace the driver name inside of the
{} to
those of the new ones. You might want to change the trailing text to the
correct
description of the new drivers.
7] In that same section find the RESOLUTION {} {} {} line and add three
lines
with the resolution set to {360x360}, {720x720}, {1440,720} (I think
these are correct)
8] save the new printerdb file
9] run printtool. select the epson uni printer. You should see the new ones
that you
added. Select the driver that you want and, above the drivers, select
the correct
resolution for that driver.
That should set up your printers correctly. The printtool has a menu item
to restart lpd.
Use the restart, highlight a printer, and print a test page.
I installed all three drivers as lp, lp0, lp1 so I have all three
resolutions. Works great.
If yopu want to e-Mail me, I'll be happy to e-Mail you back the new
printerdb file
that worked for me.

Hi David,
Run sndconfig (/usr/sbin/) as root and it should detect it as
ES1371 (Ensoniq Audio/PCI). If it's still not picking it up
make sure your /lib/modules/2.x.x/misc/ directory has the es1371.o
module in it and that you have installed the pciutils-??.rpm
package. If you have pciutils installed and can see es1371.o
in its directory do a 'modprobe -a es1371'. To confirm that it
is loaded do a 'cat /proc/modules and you should see 2 entries
one for es1371.o and its dependency module soundcore.o. Both
of these modules should have been loaded, if the soundcore.o
module is not there in /proc/modules check your /lib/modules/
2.x.x/misc/ directory to make sure it's there. Finally,
if sndconfig for some reason didn't add the SB16/PCI
entry into your /etc/conf.modules you'll have to add it
manually by adding the following line to conf.modules (if
you want it to load automagically on each reboot.)
alias sound es1371
If all the required packages have been installed you
should now have sound. To try it out run the esd daemon.

Subject: CRAZY IDEA: Linux Box as TCP/IP Network Audio/Visual Server?
Date: 4 Jun 1999 04:54:24 GMT
Hi all,
I was wondering if the following was possible (or even desireable)
I want to set up a home network for data, audio(stereo output), and video. I want a
central
consolidated server for the deal, I dont want to run Data wire, speaker wire, and COAX
to every port
and figure out a way to switch between all the different connections
Suppose you have:
a Linux Box (any Distro, any kernal you want)
A TCP/IP 10/100BaseT network with CAT5 wiring
Quality Soundcard
Quality Video Card
Is it possible to use the Linux Box as a server to send an audio/visual signal
to network ports so that I could hook up a TV and/or some stereo speakers to a network
port WITHOUT a client computer to receive the signal and translate for the TV/Speakers.
I was thinking of a simple device that would connect to a network port and output a
something
relateively simply like an RCA type connection (you know left channel, reight channel,
and/or video channel)
Any thoughts, ideas, flames, go ahead......

Just a couple of pseudo-random observations:
*) one does not require a 64 bit CPU, nor a 64 bit OS to have "64 bit
or terabyte filesystems." it might however make it easier/more
convenient.
*) if the application(s) can be broken-up into discrete tasks with little
or no interaction among the tasks, one can basically take N systems
running just about any OS and joined with just about anything
including a length of wet string and create a "system." you will
then also be able to report how it is M times faster than a Cray
and how it is "one of the world's largest supertcomputers."
there are a number of scientific/numerical simualtions where this
is possible, one example currently expending its 15 minutes is the
SETI@home work
"scaling" can be a very, um, elastic, term. especially in the hands
of the media and marketing make sure to ask for and read the
fine-print...
rick jones
Someone creating "the world's largest super computer" is much more
likely to get press than "a bunch of folks were able to string a
zillion systems together to run a really parallelizable application."

Yes, the uniform IDE patch works. You can get it here:
http://www.dyer.vanderbilt.edu/server/udma/
I run kernel 2.2.9 with this patch on my AMD K6/2-350 on an Asus P5A-B.
Works well, I get about 12.90 MB/sec with hdparm -t (with a Western

Quantum says this is needed because of some incompatibilities with old
BIOSes.. Well, as long as this can be switched back and forth with
some EXE program, I am happy.. (maybe I should have looked up a newer
BIOS program at FIC's website).
>
>IF you are against the Quantum CR, is there another UDMA drive around

I am not against Quantum CR, it works alright (in UDMA/33 mode). I am
just saying that if you are to invest into UDMA/66, make sure you are
going to benefit from UDMA/66. (I ran kernel compiles and it seems that
DMA vs. non-DMA, and even having a filesystem built in the memory,
does not affect the speed of kernel compiles by more than 1-2%; so
UDMA/33 vs. UDMA/66 is neglidgible for many applications; also keep in
mind that drives fall in price. Given all that, I'd buy a nice UDMA/33
drive if I needed one, and waited until I run out of space and UDMA/66
drives fall below $50...)
Good drives are supposed to be Quantum EX / CR and Seagate Medalist Pro..
Look up hard drives section at http://www.redhill.net.au/ig.html
Best,
a.

It seems you are running your cpu @ 400MHz for an AMD @ 350MHz
(your cpu is overclocked ! and the errors you've obtained are
probably memory errors signal 11 ! or something like that)
Some AMD K6 cpu don't accept to be overclocked more than 7-10%.
Try to run @ 350 MHz and recompile your kernel to check

I got that, too. My problem was that I only had bash-2.03 installed,
and /bin/sh was a link to it. The riva_install script appears to only
work with bash-1.x, so I downloaded and installed the RPM for that.
Now I have bash (which is bash-1.x) and bash2 (guess). I changed
every user's shell to bash2, and I haven't seen any bad side effects
yet.... It's probably more in line with Red Hat's way of doing
things, anyway. If you're not running Red Hat, then you can ignore
most of that and just install bash-1.x somewhere and change the riva
script to use it instead.
After doing that, the script ran fine and the server works with my
128ZX card.
