Depending on what you need the box for, if you want Dell, both the
Optiplex line (sort of generic, everything integrated, but not too bad
overall) and the high end workstations are being sold right now with
redhat 6.0.

Go to http://www.dell.com/linux/config.htm to get a good look. Email
me if you have any questions about specific config's.

of course a modem will send and receive analog over the channel.
input and output from the user may be either analog (e.g., your fm
radio) or digital (e.g., a mil-std-188-165 compatible). a digital
modem tends to hit the digital domain sooner rather than later and
perform the bulk of the signal processing digitally rather than in
analog circuitry.

rf downconversion will probably always be analog. around here at
work, a digital modem is one which does the signal processing
digitally. i.e., phase derotation, timing synchronization and the
matched filter is digitally processed. this is as opposed to analog
matched filtering.

pots limits you to about 3000 baud on the line. to get more than
2400 bps you need a high order signal constellation, i.e., qam. i
think any of the qam based modems have to be digital in order to be
pratical.

look for the rs-232c interface. *all* externals with rs-232c work
with linux. plus you get blinkenlights!

That's good news. Does the driver support the SP/DIF input?

This is very possible:

I started with 10GB IDE win98 single partition drive

using partition magic 4.0:

create empty space at the end of the win98 drive (any amount - I
started at 2gb, I now use 3gb))

do not use the wizard

right click the empty space

create linux swap partition at end of empty space as LOGICAL partition

create linux ext2 partition starting at the beginning of free space as
a LOGICAL partition, use remaining space

partition magic creates these inside a PRIMARY EXTENDED partition

install Linux!

IMPORTANT: install lilo on the Linux partition

Install Bootmagic

Hope this helps out

Which mouse did you choose during setup ? Try the generic ps/2 mouse if all

Use isapnp to configure the io port and IRQ, then use setserial to tell the
op-sys about it. Make sure it does not conflict with one of your serial ports.

(i.e. disable COM2 in the BIOS if you set the modem to COM2)

Do not replace the ne2000 with a 3C509 ISA card. You will never get
good network performance in a PCI machine with ISA cards. I bought
2 PCI cards (10/100 RealTek 8139 based generics) for $17 each and
they send about 900 Kbytes/second, which is 90% of the theoretical max
on 10baseT. (I only have a 10 MegBit hub for now)

Anyway, rather than spend $50 on a 3C509, spend $40 on 2 PCI cards.
You will be surprised.

I heard that there is a NetGear card at www.buy.com for somewhere around
$11. (PCI, 10/100 mbit)

Thank you for the detailed answer. I was using 2.2.5 and I did have
modular sound enabled. What I didn't have, it seems is the right header
files. It seems Debian does not always link /usr/include/linux,
/usr/include/asm (and one other, I forget which one) into the kernel tree,
but provides it'sown headers. I found this trick on the bttv list.
Your other suggestions came in realy handy one I've done that.

What I needed to do was go into /usr/include and make the links into the
correct kernel tree, then recompile the modules and install them.
That made it work. I tested the driver by running x11amp and playing
a CD, and the sound is great! Thank you, thank you!

Hello,

Under w1nd0z3, the card works fine and is reported to have IRQ 11, IO
0x340.
cat /proc/interrupts shows interrupt 11 as free.
cat /proc/ioports shows io 0x340 as free.
I'm running Debian GNU/Linux version 2.1 (potato) with kernel 2.2.9

The scsi card is the only reason for me to run M$ crap btw... so please
help me getting rid of it ;)

Thanks a lot in advance,

Here are my various attempts:

Attempted: Driver statically compiled into the kernel.
           append="aha152x=0x340,11,7,1" in lilo.conf.
hardware switches on card active/inactive gives same result.
Result:
aha152x: processing commandline:
aha152x: <NULL>
aha152x: invalid line (controller=1)
ok
aha152x: BIOS test: passed, detected 1 controller(s)
aha152x0: vital data: PORTBASE=0x340, IRQ=11, SCSI ID=7,
reconnect=enabled, parity=enabled, synchronous=disabled, delay=100,
extended translation=disabled
aha152x: trying software interrupt, lost.
aha152x: IRQ 11 possibly wrong. Please verify.
scsi : 0 hosts.
scsi : detected total.

However, when I initialize it with isapnptools:
ADP1510/1467392874[0]{SCSI Controller }: Port 0x340; IRQ11 --- Enabled
OK

I have no clue what the stuff about invalid commandline is about and where
to correct that.

Attempted: Driver as module.
           Initialization with isapnptools.
           append="aha152x=0x340,11,7,1" in lilo.conf
           aha152x in /etc/modules
hardware switches on card inactive/inactive gives same result
Result:
ADP1510/1467392874[0]{SCSI Controller }: Port 0x340; IRQ11 --- Enabled
OK
Calculating module dependencies... done.
Loading modules: aha152x scsi : 0 hosts.
/lib/modules/2.2.9/scsi/aha152x.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

After this, I get
isapnp: Device 'Creative SB AWE64 PnP'
isapnp: Device 'Adaptec AHA-1510B'
isapnp: 2 Plug & Play devices detected total

If I try to load it manually:
# insmod scsi_mod

# insmod sg
# insmod aha152x

Right, the TNT2 is clearly a more advanced design and has more raw computing
power than a Voodoo3.
On the other hand, in real-world-applications available today (games i.e.),
like Quake2, Unreal etc, the glide-standard still beats Direct3D 2:1, that
is why in 16-bit-color a Voodoo3 usually outperfoms a TNT2.

And when finally 32-bit-color-games arrive in numbers, I would not want to
stick with my then "old" TNT2-design, but would want to use the newest
generation of graphics-card chips, with the soon to be released
geometry-engine hardcoded on the chip. NVidia announced them for late 99.

So for today, I enjoy my Voodoo3-speed in Windows games, found the new
Linux-x-server to work rather flawless with my Voodoo card in 1600*1200*32
bit and am happily waiting for the things to come.....

Kind regards

The included SCSI really is a SCSI card, but not worth using. There
have been several posts describing how to enable interrupts, instead of
the default polling. This will allow you to use the card. But using a
DB25 connector for SCSI is pretty perverse.

I have an Astra 1200S, and am not using the included card, cable, or
terminator. The scanner also uses DB25 connectors, an abomination that
I believe Apple introduced.

With a decent SCSI card, good cables, and active termination, I have had
NO troubles with the scanner itself. My SCSI chain looks like this:

Terminated controller HD50 -> C50 CD-R C50 -> DB25 scanner DB25 -> C50
tape C50 -> active terminator

Calling all tape drive experts. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
I recently aquired a Tandberg Travan NS20 for backing up several

the computer configuration:

RedHat 6.0

neither of these happen.
