The problem is that Intel-based Dual-Processor motherboards DO NOT
IMPLEMENT APM CORRECTLY. At least P2B-D (i've got one too) does not for
sure. AFAIK Intel promises to correct the problem, but when ? I don't
know...

He _had_ trouble installing Windows, no doubt about that. He uses this
experience to show that a common reason for choosing Windows over other
OSs because of easy installation, does not hold in the real world.

And now you tell him to get drivers for this and that over the net?!?
Well, one often heard reason for _not_ liking Linux, is that you might
have to get special patches and other software for your specific
hardware-configuration over the net. This argument is often used by MS-
advocates...

I'd say you just proved his point!

Using the demo of OSS package (3.9.2g) I can get sound in Enlightenment.
IIRC it auto-detects as ESS Solo-1 PCI (beta) but it works...

SuSE 6.1 - default kernel.

BTW - Don't you have to use a kernel with no sound support inbuilt
before OSS will work?

I just got a new Creative Ensoniq 1371, and just installed RedHat 6.0
I am getting no bass response from my CD player, although mp3s
have good bass.
Also, the mixers say that bass and treble aren't supported, so it looks
like
I can't adjust it, like I could with my old SB16
So, is the card WORSE than a 7 year or SB16?
Is there something I can do to get the bass increased?
I can go back to the old card, but its an ISA, and I'm low on slots, so
I would
rather have the new one. However, if it's just a cheap and not so good
card,
I may have to switch.
Otherwise, Suggestions for a decent $20-30 sound card with bass/treble
supported?

Thanks
Chuck.

I have a sony camcorder and I'd like to get a video capture card,
when that also has a television tuner if possible. Are there any
that will work with Linux??!! I guess the more proper question is,
are there drivers written for any video catpure cards?
How hard are they to configure? Would I be better off just hooking it
up to a Windows machine instead??

Another stupid question, you do need a cable input into the back of
the card in order to receive television channels, correct?

Thanks!

Yes, this possibility exists.

Celerons and Pentium II/III have fixed mulitpliers, so you cannot change
it. The only way you can overclock these CPUs is by upping the bus speed.

>Do you mean that if I o/c my CPU to 500 MHz (7.5*66), it will work

You can't do it with your board since the bus speed is not adjustable.

Hi,

Has anyone tried or heard of people installing Red Hat on a
Dell Dimension (desktop model as opposed to the server model).

The Dell rep tried to persuade me to the much more expensive
server line, warning that Dell would not support Linux on
a desktop model. But the server line is over $700 more for
the same configuration.

I'm planning a 500mhz PIII, 384 Meg RAM, and 22 gig HD.

(It's an institutional purchase, so I want to go with a
know brand. It's my head of I go with a generic PC and
something goes wrong).

Cheers,

I am trying to set up 3 sound-blaster AWE64's in one computer under
linux(don't ask!) I know sndconfig only lets you configure 1 card and
writes the info to /etc/isapnp.conf, but I have edited that file
manually to include 3 of them. I first booted the computer into win98
and successfully configured the os to see them. I then used the irq,
dma's and addresses to set them up in /etc/isapnp.conf. They ended up
using irq's 5,7 and 10 and dma's 0,1,3,5,6,7. To make the story short, I
couldn;t get them to work. Does anyone know of an easier/different way
to do this? Is it possible?

Thanks,

Try to boot with the Slackware nfs installation boot disk (net.i), that
kernel is able to autodetect most network cards. Once the card gets
detected the kernel will probably tell you which driver it is using.

Try this...

1. log in as root user
2. run "contol-panel" from the command prompt (without quotes of course)
3. click on the print tool
4. click the add button (the default values should be ok...but not sure)
5. select as an input filter the HP Deskjet 550C/560C/6xxC printer
6. Optionally check the printer options (for my 692C I need to check all
three)
7. Optionally add "-dDepletion=2" (again without quotes) in the Extra GS
options box (If your printer spits out too much ink)
8. Restart lpd and print a test page (menu options in the print tool)

good luck

Hi,

Hardware config,
IBM 770X Thinkpad
SelectaDock III docking station incl AHA-2940(I think) SCSI Controller
2GB Jazz Drive attahced to above

The above config works fine. I have the SCSI drivers compiled into the
kernel and it works great.

However, I now want to use an additional SCSI controller a 1480A
CardBus controller, in one of the PC slots of the laptop. I've
installed and configured the latest version of the pcmcia modules. But
when I insert the 1480A all sorts of shit happens. But the key things
are the cardmgr finds two scsi busses. scsi1 and scsi2, this is in
addition to the existing scsi0. It appears that that it has found the
2940 again and is assigning it to scsi2 as well as scsi0.

Does this sound normal ?
