I am going to use my RH 5.2 linux computer to be a gateway to the internet. I
am looking for a 56K V90 or K56flex modem. I have heard that the Diamond
Multimedia SupraExpress 56e has good preformance. Does it work in linux? If
it doesn't are there any good external 56K modems under about $70?

There're few utilities out there which do the above, one is called RAIN.

Actually, I'm having to specify "-t msdos" so it all depends on installation
and config parameters I suppose. In any case, mount is not always fully
automatic ...

Subject: cache problem with MO 640MB under ext2
Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 01:53:22 +0200

Within a session of moving mass-data to several MO-640 disks, I ran into
a problem: One of the tools or drivers involved seemed to forget to mark
some cashed data as invalid after unmount. When swapping a disk, I was
presented the top-directory from a previous disk after having inserted
the next (unmount the previous, mount the next). To prevent damage, I
called 'pcmcia restart' with each disk-swap so everything went fine.
This was with Adaptec 1460 PCMCIA SCSI-card, running on kernel 2.2.9
with mount version 2.9i and pcmcia-cs version 3.0.10. Used mostly mc for
moving of data (backupping via the 'update' function inside its copy
utility).

With ext2, use of the MO-drives is pretty fine (with fat one should not
even try - too slow). For comparison: Could not convince Win95 of having
a disk swapped, instead it would write a false FAT to a next disk
(similar problem as above but more perfectly destructive... has cost me
some unique data). DOS 6.22 would handle the media mostly fine; DOS 7
cannot retrieve correct overall-sizes after swapping (one needs to
switch off/on smartdrv and call chkdsk so it restores most information
for next disk but obviously not all). So Linux looks pretty well here.

I just heard about 'rain', recently. its interesting that a third
party ends up releasing an OS patch that enables such a basic property of an
OS, yet wasn't ever there in any shipping version ;-)

to get this printserver to work with a HPL5extra printer. Also, does
anyone know what printer switches will work with Linux. Will an

What network card do you have? And what kind of BIOS is it - Award,
AMI, Phoenix, or what? Maybe you just want to disable PNP on the
network card. Also, if your non-PNP network card needs an IRQ, you may
have to tell your BIOS not to use that particular IRQ for its
Plug-N-Play magic, but insteads to assign it for use with an ISA card
instead. In an AMI BIOS, there is usually a page called "Plug-N-Play
settings" or something like that, where you can make that setting.

Hi everyone.

Probably a trival problem, but I just installed 6.0. I have a TB
Pinnacle and want to use sndconfig
to configure the card. However, the instructions for creating the
firmware file fail for lack of target
(no rule to make target conf).

Hs anyone successfully installed drivers for the pinnacle this way? Or
need I do this through a

which installed some scripts or commands?

I have not been able to find any docs other than an extremely terse man

I definitively do not have resources to develope one of my own.

The solutions (DSP Boards) I know each cost a lot more than one Alpha

I am sure there exist no bug-free code but it is a big difference if
there exist some hundred people using it, or some hundred thousend.

Many DSP vendors are not interested to give much support to a small
university lab which buys only two or three systems, because it is too
expensive to fix things. We have sad experiences with that.

Also, I think that matching DSP Code to another board architekture is
really a big lot of more work than porting a programm, say from Linux
2.0.35 tp 2.2.5.

Subject: sig 11 (was Re: Linux program to exercise Dual-CPU system?)
Date: Wed, 9 Jun 1999 16:35:18 GMT

As a followup to all my postings about SMP and Linux and sig-11 problems
and not being able to duplicate them:

I think that the overall problem was/is the sound driver in kernel version
2.0.32, which is what I'm currently running in SMP mode.

I can positively crush my system with compiles, matrix math, busy loops,
and even the dreaded Netscape, and I don't have problems. I've reinstalled
all my DRAM and turned the cache on and I've done over 100 kernel compiles
without a single fatal error.

I got the hunch when the "play" program (plays .wav files) locked up
the whole system, when I was using that instead of amp to have some
tunes while the system chugged.

So now that I'm not using any sounds whatsoever, the whole system is
rock solid again, even though my CPUs don't exactly match and I don't
have the updated 2.2 kernel.

Many thanks for all the pointers, ideas, and tips during this time.
I've learned a lot about the system, and a lot about trying to get to
a motherboard that is obscured by hard drives and cables.

My next PC is going to be in a full tower case.

Thanks again!

Subject: Recommend Components for Hardware Upgrade
Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 23:35:05 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey Guys,

I box I currently have runs NT4, but I going to do a dual boot with
Linux in the near future. At the same time, I am also planning to
upgrade components. This box has three different users and is used
primarily for web research, web authoring and scientific
research/computation/data entry/report writing. The current setup,
originally a Micron Millennia MME 200, is as follows:

Intel Pentium 200 MMX
96 MB SDRAM
6.4GB Maxtor HD
Floppy Drive
Pioneer 32X CD-ROM
Iomega ZIP (ATAPI)
USR 56K modem (ISA, not winmodem)

What I am thinking about doing is putting in a new MotherBoard (and
most likely newer & faster RAM), new processor, and extra 4.3GB
harddrive. The other hardware would continue to be used and not
upgraded. I have a couple of questions that I would love some
feedback and recommendations on:

1) What do you think of ASUS, ABIT, and INTEL motherboards,
specifically is one brand better than another for LINUX and/or dual
boot situations? If so, which model motherboard from that brand?

2) Should I go with a PII 350 MHz or 400 MHz or one of the newer
Celerons, maybe even a dual Celeron configuration? Also, why should I
do this?

3) Lastly, from personal experience, who do you think makes the best
IDE harddrives? I only ask because I have heard bad things about
Maxtor and thought I might try something new.

I greatly appreciate your feedback on this. Take care and have a
great week!!!

I have the 2919L, and I suggest that you return it while you
still can. Once you get it working, you will still experience
stalls and freezes when downloading compressible data streams.
The problem is a design defect, and every user of this modem has
the problem under linux.

The only workaround, so far, is to either turn off hardware
compression or turn off FIFO support (by using setserial to
pretend that the modem has a 16450 UART). Zoom tech support is
unable to reproduce the problem because they have no machines
except WinXX machines at Zoom. This modem does not fully support
linux, and I'd dump it while you can still return it for a
refund.

The workaround, by the way, will give you a 56K modem that
normally connects and operates as a V.34 modem.

If you contact tech support, they'll only email you a form letter
about UNIX in general. It'll contain my workaround, which
they've now added to the list of "fixes" since I told them about
it.

David,

I've been using an 8-port Cyclades since kernel v1.2.13 and it's

Cyclades cards also enjoy direct driver support in the existing
kernels.
