Dell has recently announced that they are shipping systems with Linux pre-installed.
It's very likely that if they aren't advertising a system with Linux installed, they'll
still make the components Linux-compliant.
I'm sure if you asked and called, they might tell you.
Linux is tough, like a rock... And you know what a rock does to Windows? :-)

WHAT??
Why is APM not SMP safe? I mean, yes, one CPU might be doing nothing while
the other is running full-tilt, so you can't use that idle time to shut
down the system. But what else?
I've been _really_ hoping that I could use APM to put my new dual-celeron
system to sleep until (a) the modem gets a phone call or (b) a timer goes
off saying it's time to wake up and sniff the e-mail.

I ran updatedb -v to show the files being indexed. It hung on
/.automount (this is a new installation).
I then ran updatedb -v -e /.automount and it hung on /misc (excluded it)
/net (excluded it) and it completed.
The final command was:
updatedb -v -e /.automount -e /misc -e /net
This seems to be strange behavior to me. Those three directories have
the same owner, group and permissions as the other directories in /.

I think you are mixing up two different kinds of clusters here.
Beowolf is a computational cluster, thus aimed at computing power. Each
node complements the other ones in order to increase computing power.
What the original poster is looking for is a high availability cluster.
High availability clusters are not primarily meant to increase computing
power, but are set up such that when one node fails, another node takes
over all (or most) of its functions. I believe Beowolf does not offer
such failover capabilities.

Ton.

I've bought an IBM 9ES (DDRS 9130D) which turned out be the LVD-version.
I've already two 2ES 4.5 GB (single ended) connected to the adapter's
wide side where one is terminated. So I decided that I would force the
9ES to single ended by setting that jumper and put it before the
terminated disk and it is detected by the adapter.
So I did and now comes the promblems. I can't do anything with the drive
except talk to its firmware. I've tried Adaptec SCSI benchmark program
in Win95 but it reports sense error 0xBh and in Linux I receive data-in
sync problems and when it tries to reset the SCSI bus the system
freezes. The strange thing is that I can low format the drive and verify
the surface in the adapter bios but I can't create a partition on the
drive in either DOS, WIN95 or Linux. Has anyone any clue what might be
wrong? Can it be the cable? It's a SE cable with 5 connectors.
The SCSI system looks like this:
50 pin side +----------+ 68 pin side (internal)

Don't know but maybe some interrupt-things.
Am waiting for it to become SMP-safe scince years and I don't have the
ability
to implement this myself (don't understand the kernel-parts for it
enough and don't know why exactly.).
Anybody knows the exact reason? (If it's possible for me I'll fix it as
soon as I know about the why.)

Hi,
I have setup a Dlink 100mb network using Dlink nic's and hubs. The
nic's are using the via-rhine driver. Dhcp and Samba won't work at
100mb if I change the hub to 10mb's it seems to work fine. Ifconfig is
displaying collisions on eth0 they look high to me.
Using Win98 as the client it is unable to obtain a lease at 100mb but
does fine at 10mb's. I am able to ping the linux system only.
We are using Caldera 2.2 OpenLinux
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Winmodems need a significant amount of software support, and rely on
lots and lots of code in Windows. Therefore, they don't work without these
drivers and since the drivers are only for Windows, I'm afraid you're
out of luck.
The same with WinPrinters: they need about the whole Windows GDI to work.

i have the same configuration on a compaq 5150 if the screen is bland
when you start x try using CTRL ALT + or - to scrol through the video
modes. i use redhat 6.0 with the SVGA server don't use the mach 64 server
since it is hopelessly screwed with the LT PRO. as for the modem... i
still can't get that one to work... if you have better luck, e- mail me at
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. turn all P&P crap off in the bios by using F10 on
startup.. turn the os setting to <other OS>. the svga server is the only
one that i can get to work. the mach 64 server freezes and takes the
whole system with it.. use XF86Setup. that is my favorite vid config
program. make sure you enter the exact parameters to the monitor. you
should be able to get all vid modes. (the 1024 mode is a little flickery)

150 Meg is a bit overdoing it for the /boot file system. 5 Meg should
be sufficient maybe 10 Meg to be on the safe side. The root and the
other file system can then be placed at will anywhere on the disk,
or another disk if you like as long as the entire /boot file system is
entirely located within the first 1024 cylinders of the first disk unit.

Yup, and I must be the only one in the world with UDMA-33 enabled on this
board without exhibiting any 'stability' problems. OTOH, its major job
ATM is the rc5 challenge, and a little net browzing as I learn the
system. That and kernel compiling...

Well, this error message when you run locate is because locate can't find the
database. RedHat 6.0 ships with slocate (Secure Locate) and the database is in
/var/lib/slocate/slocate.db. If updatedb fails during the process, no database is

I'm no guru, in fact I've only been playing with linux since april, but my
understanding of the dev listings is that your cdrom is of device type hdd ...
ie because it has removeable media (cd's)
so your mount command should look like:
mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom
the first parameter is the device itself, and the second is where you are
mounting it.
