Not really. These are optional portions so if they're too unstable for you,
you can just get rid of them. That's what I did.

Hi,
i'm trying to set up a linux server in my office, using SAMBA, to connect 4
windows boxes and to provide them the internet access. I setted up the
smb.conf and also the windows boxes. These ones recognize the server
(because when i shut the server down a message like that appears "unable to
locate a server for the domain ecc. ecc.") but the password seems to be
wrong.
Now i used the same names, the same group of my linux users and i also
synchronized the smb and linux passwords.
I read in some newsgroups that there may be some prblems with the windows
registrers but i really don't know where the problem may be, also because i
made an error installing linux and i started the NIS service without setting
it out without knowing how to disable it and if it may cause problems with
samba.
Thanx

I'm using a Canon BJ-100 with rh 6.0. In wp8, there is no driver for
this model, so I use the "standard printer" selection. When I want to
print in wp8, because of the standard printer selection, I lose my
fonts. Wp8 defaults to wp Courier 10, and I lose the rest of my fonts,
apparently permanently.
Does anybody know of a compatible driver for the canon Bj-100, or nay wp
compatible driver specifically for this printer.

Well, sure, Gnome isn't all that stable, although by now it seems more
stable than Windows. As for window managers, Enlightenment is
definitely bleeding edge, and at least it's being honest to call it
prerelease. The nice thing about Gnome, though, is that you can run
your choice of window manager with it (even an old standby like ctwm,
which is rock stable), and even if Gnome crashes, you won't lose your
session.
For that matter, though, you're not forced to use either Gnome or
KDE. You can run X with fvwm or WindowMaker or BlackBox or ctwm, or
not even bother with X at all and just run a command line. Choices,
my friend, choices!

I'm thinking of trying your approach with my Sony F160, and I know
Sony decided against including the SoundBlaster hw sound chip,
instead relying on the ideosyncratic sound support of the primary 256

I just got one of these on my new Dell system. It's a PCI-based
chipset which is apparently not compatible with Linux's opl3sa2/3/x
driver. I don't think Yamaha has released programming info for their
PCI chipsets, so you're SOL unless OSS has a binary module for it.
The NT drivers for the chipset require a ridiculously convoluted
install (ie make 3 floppies), so I gave it up as a bad business and
forked out $60 for an SB PCI 128, which works with the free es1370
driver. Fortunately, it's easy to disable the Yamaha chipset from the
BIOS setup screen.
ObDisclaimer: if the PCI 128 sounds good to you, remember that it
doesn't do MIDI synthesis in hardware, so you'll need a program such
as Timidity to play MIDI files. I wish I could figure out how to
convert the rather nice MIDI waveset that comes with the card into GUS
patch format...
ObDisclaimer2: the SB PCI 512 is EMU10K-based, like the SB Live, and
therefore does *not* work with the es137x drivers. Last time I looked,
the EMU10K also did not have publically available programming info.

Dear Marc:
I wonder if you know how to solve a problem I'm having with RH6 ppa, lp
and the new parport mods.
I used to share IOMEGA ZIP and printer loading and unloading the ppa and
lp modules using RH 5.1
Now with RH6 I can't access the printer after I load ppa (according to
the HOWTO it should work that way).
I always get the message "lp0: using parport0 (polling)" and that the
"printer is offline" whenever I try to print.
If I boot and don't try to load ppa, the printer works properly and I
only get the message lp0: using parport0 (polling).
Could please give a hint of what I'm doing wrong ??
I appreciate your help,

I use E and it should be .99 or 1.0 as it is actually very stable. But gnome is
not so stable, so 1.0 should not have been it. And using E and gnome together,
isn't stable at all. It works for awhile and then something stops working. Or
simply won't start. I don't know which causes the most bugs. probably gnome
though.

Use the included es1370 driver in 2.2 kernels. It doesn't do hardware
MIDI synthesis, but it's fine as a wave device and CD player, or for
playing MIDI and MODs using a software synthesizer.
If the 1370 driver doesn't work, try the 1371 driver.

You need to get the latest beta 3c59x driver (version 0.99L at this
writing) at
ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/test/3c59x.c
Replace the existing 3c59x.c file in linux/drivers/net with this one
and recompile your kernel/modules.
The newer driver autodetects the 3c905C and works just dandy (I'm using
it right now). The driver that comes with RedHat 6.0 was released before
the 905C came out, and as you say, it didn't work with my card.

A TR-4 tape is 740 feet (so says Seagate). You should be able to get
the density and set the block size as desired with the mt utility.
Recent versions (mt-st 0.5b, check on metalab.unc.edu) know about TR-4

Subject: Ethernet card and Modem

Hi all,
I am using an ethenet card at an intranet and i am trying to
connect to
internet by using a modem. However, there is a problem here. It seems
that the modem and ethernet card cannot coexist together. I have to
deactivate the ethernet card before i can connect to internet usong the
modem.
Otherwise, we cannot even "ping" the machines in our subnet!!
