Dan:

Go to http://glide.xxedgexx.com/3DfxRPMS_vb_glibc.html (which you can
navigate your way to from www.3dfx.com, if you want), and download and
install (via rpm) the 3 rpm files there:

XFree86_3DFX-SVGA-3.3.3-5.i386.rpm,
XFree86_3DFX-XF86Setup-3.3.3-5.i386.rpm,
XFree86_3DFX-rushlib-3.3.3-5.i386.rpm

Then run XF86Config (or whatever, can't quite remember the spelling of
this command), and choose "card" from the menu at the top. You should
see the new voodoo3 driver there. Select it and go from there.

I did this after installing RedHat 6.0 and everything was honkey-dorey.

Hello,

i'm currently building an internet server. it's connected to a cable modem
via the serial port.
The io card contains 2 uart16450 chips. These are just a little bit too slow
for the modem so i replaced 1 chip with a 16550A. But Linux doesn't
recognize it properly. It just says there are 2 16450's...

when i issue the command
# ~ setserial /dev/ttyS1 uart 16550A

the port does work very unrelieable..

some one got a solution??

greetings from holland.

What kind of SSD are you using? I've had good luck with SanDisk and Linux.

Which PC104 card? And what IO cards (some are hard to find drivers for).

Might work for her - probably depends on her other hardware (my ISDN

machine first, so you can give tech support a bollocking if it doesn't work.

Perhaps I need to clarify here... The adaptec SCSI card was "added" after
the system was loaded with 6.0. How do I now get the system to see it.
Linuxconf says there are no SCSI devices in the system. This card and tape
drive works fine on a idenical system with Redhat 5.2. Note: I am not
already using a SCSI HD, I have a 13.5G IBM IDE drive in the system.

Yeup.

Make sure you have a kernel with advanced power management support
compiled in to it. You should probably also run "apmd". Then you can
use plenty of tools to access the battery information, or just access
"/proc/apm" yourself to make your own tools.

You are much better off with ecc memory. It is currently
below $1/MB. Btw., memory drops in price so fast that it
is reasonable to get 128MB now and another 128 in a few months,
when it is below $40... You would not want an overpriced
256MB DIMM anyways.
Ooops, you have already bought non-ecc... Rest in peace.

> 13.6 Quantum CX series hard drive IDE

You mean -- Quantum CR? I am not sure whether under Linux
you'd get any advantage of UDMA/66 vs. UDMA/33. My EX drive
gives around 12MB/s and this is probably it... If at some
point you see you need to downgrade UDMA/66 to UDMA/33, there is
an EXE thing at Quantum's web site.

Wvdial is "too advanced"; try minicom first and see what happens.
To mention, if that thing lives at COM3=/dev/ttyS2,
some software might appreciate if you added a symbolic link to "modem":

ln -s /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem

or, even better, ln -sf /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem

That's no mystery: this IRQ is not there until computer is using
the modem.

Subject: Re: What's the best 12 Gb IDE tape for Linux
Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 05:03:33 GMT

To answer your question:

A relatively new entry into the field of high capacity tape drives are the
TR5 models. These have a native capacity of 10gigs will hold upwards of
20gigs with compresion. Seagate makes one of these models, which we
recently bought, and it works well (reference http://www.seagate.com for
information on their current models)

As for software, normally a backup is just made using "tar" (standing for
Tape ARchive). Gnutar supports a number of compression options including
the standard "gzip" or "compress". There are also cute ways to make it use
bzip2 or just about any other filter you can think of.

As for interface and drivers......umm....it's a standard IDE atapi device.
When the systems boots it will detect the device and you should be able to
access it on /dev/ht0 without further modificaitons. Alternatively you
can make the standard links to make it show up as /dev/rmt0 if you want to
conform to earlier Un*x conventions.

Other options are much more expensive (I'm thinking DLT or DDS type
driver) My favorites are still the SCSI minicarts just because of their
speed and reliablity (and portability)

1.44MB as A:.
Bios was properly configured as such, linux works the 1.44 with out
a hassle but it Would NOT work the 360K despite the fact that it recognized
it from the system bootup. trying to use the second drive gave me I/O error
or drive not present errors. I am using Linux kernal 2.0.35 on a clone
486DX2/66 mhz Vesa local bus machine.
What must I do to use a 360K floppy drive on this system? I really
need it for transfering files to my IBM-xt(s). Do I need a 1.2MB drive? if
so where can I find one of those HD controllers for the Xts (if I am going
to go to that problem. might as well put 1.44mb drives on the Xts cheaper!)
By the way I have the mtools ver 3.9.1 in additon to the fdformat
package. Slackware 3.1 also came with something called superformat which
for the life of me I cannot get to work!
A hint from the Western Digital MFM HD wd1006V-MM1 states that one
cannot use High Density and low density drives on the same controller. Ok
so I set up the WD1006V-mm1 floppy controller to the second floppy
controller setting. and my Adaptec AHA 2825VL scsi host adaptor's floppy
for the primary channel. How do I get Linux to use the second controller
for the 360K drive as the first drive? what settings do I send to lilo?
Funny enough Msdos lets me mix the two densities on one controller. why not
linux? am I missing something here? or did that problem just get fixed on
the newest 2.2.x kernels
While we are on Drives. I use the MFM HD for dos usage. but if I
set lilo up like this
hda=1166,7,17 (priam V199 Full hight 70MB)
and if I ever use Lilo it complains that Linux is not on the first HD. I
have no desire to put Linux or Lilo on the MFM HD! Should I make the AT IDE
/mfm driver into a module and load/unload it when I need it so Lilo don't c
omplain about linux not being on the first drive?

Hi,
I've got Intel Celeron 366Mhz processor and I was trying to overclock
it. Unfortunately all Celerons have fixed its multiplier so there is
only one way to overclock it - to change FSB speed. I have an ABIT BH6
motherboard which supports 66,75,83,100,112, 124 and 133 MHz selection
for FSB speed but unfortunately PCI speed is determined from FSB speed
(66-83 its 1/2 FSB, 100-133 its 1/2 FSB). I managed to set FSB 83Mhz and
everything under Win95 was OK - I run Quake2 for about 2 hours and
nothing wrong happened. So I decided to test if linux will suffer some
overclocking...
For about six reboots it was OK and the I saw: "Unable to mount root
device...". When I tried to boot from floppy and repair it I failed.
After repairing ext2 nothing was readable!!! It was completly damaged
and I lost about 2GB!!!
What could be wrong with linux?
Why does Windows (or rather winshit) work?...

your SCSI _card_ is not being detected. "0 hosts" should be taken
literally.

What card? What SCSI parameters are compiled into the kernel? More
details?

Thanks for your input.
The screen does havee a workable size now.
It's all still a bit crappy: fonts are sometimes broken and the windows
leave lines and all, but I can live with that for now. (I haven't had so
much fun with a computer since my C64!)
I'm getting a lot of errormessages from X still, like:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
System: `/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp -w 1 -R/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb
-xkm -m us -em1 "The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:" -emp
"> " -eml "Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server"
keymap/xfree86 /var/tmp/xfree86.xkm'
X Error of failed request: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window
parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 62 (X_CopyArea)
Resource id in failed request: 0x3800002
Serial number of failed request: 214
Current serial number in output stream: 214
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 4 (X_DestroyWindow)
Resource id in failed request: 0x340000f
Serial number of failed request: 2048
Current serial number in output stream: 2051

waiting for X server to shut down xterm: fatal IO error 32 (Broken
pipe) or KillClient on X server ":0.0"
xterm: fatal IO error 32 (Broken pipe) or KillClient on X server ":0.0"
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I think I should be able to correct the error concerning the keyboard
(how? I still have to read a lot I guess)
I suspect the rest off the errormessages has to do with the alpha-status
of the SiS-X-server?
I'll be back!

I havent put linux on my new computer but I did check out 3dfx's site, they
provide a linux driver for the v3. Doesn't it work? Because I'd think that
it would be better than using a banshee driver for the v3.

I asked Onstream about their linux support and this is what they said
"
Raphael,
Thank you for your inquiry.
OnStream will introduce support on Novell and Unix servers for the ADR70
drive that will ship in the Fall 1999. This new drive includes features such
as hardware data compression and Wide Ultra2 LVD SCSI interface specifically
for these types of servers. There are no plans to support OnStream DI30,
DP30, SC30, or SC50 drives on Novell or Unix servers. For more information
