This sounds right. With my ZipPlus, I recall once saying 'modprobe
imm' in a shell, and getting a long reply full of positive comments,
after which everything worked. Now, everything is configured, and the
module loads without comment. I try to forget the things that don't
work, but there is a nagging memory of Caldera's tool for managing
modules from the kde desktop not being satisfactory for this.

Dig up any available docs and forward them to someone doing USB development.

The ps/2 mouse uses IRQ 12. Check your other cards to see if one is
using irq 12. I had the same problem on my laptop. While logged in as
root or su, do a cat /proc/interrupts, and cat /proc/ioports. To see
what else you can cat, type ls /proc.

BINGO!!! That's the problem - the zipdisk has been bulk erased, leaving
no data on the surface whatsoever - no bits, no bytes - nuthin' but bare
oxide. Therefore, no partitions to be deleted. I even booted into W95
(first time in 6 weeks!) figuring I could dos format it then re-format
in Linux - but no go! Win95 puked. Tried straight 1980's style DOS6.20
- same result.
Perhaps a coaster will be its final use - but it pisses me off to have a
healthy-looking, mechanically perfect rotating random access magnetic
disk and a machine to use it in - and not be able to use it! I paid
about eight bucks for it, too!!
Thanks for you suggestions, though. I'll keep trying 'when I get
everything else done'. :)

This sounds like a ROM-BIOS/CD-ROM compatibility problem rather than a
Linux problem. Try the "support" section of the CD-ROM vendor's website
to see how to disable UDMA on the drive. It will be slower, but it
should work.

I have a Surfboard 1200 connected to my Mandrake 6.0 box ...
Try 'route add default gw 192.168.100.1'
that will tell your machine to throw all packets for unknown hosts
through thr cable modem and then you should be able to hit your ISP's
Domain name server to resolve names.
This works for me .. I just installed 6.0 and have not automated the
networking ... before I add the modem as the default gateway, I can get
the pages from the modem and connect, but trying to go anywhere else
just sets there.

When my computer freezes the way you describe it has always been some
kind of software conflict. You say keyboard doesn't work...does this
mean you cannot do cntl-alt-del to see if a program is hanging? Not
sure about temp but 104 seems to be a little on the high side from
what I have read. Not really hot but warm. Could be causing some
problems if you have border line chips. If you are unsure then open
case and place some kind of fan to blow extra air across board and see
if the problem continues. If it goes away then you know heat is the
culprit and you can take some more permanent measures.

I really didn't want to post this ...
I have a zip parallel (years old ...) that was working fine with ppa
under redhat 5.1 ... last night wiped the system to start fresh with
Mandrake 6.0 and now the drive will not work.
loading ppa gives the following:
ppa: Version 2.03 (for Linux 2.2.x)

... Which tells me that the drive is fine (It was fine yesterday as
well ...) but the disk can't be read for some reason (It was fine
yesterday too!) ... when I try it with a windows disk that does work on
my windows machine, I get the same results.
If I try to mount my backup disks (formatted ext2) using 'mount -t
ext2 /dev/sda /zip' I get '/dev/sda - invalid block device' or something
like that ... same with /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda4 with a windows disk ...
any ideas how to fix this?
