Yep.
I'm testing the latest kernel and was wondering what sound card you
have. I think it would be great if somebody could port the SoundBlaster
Live card correctly. I tried the sblive.o driver from the Creative
website and all I get is snap-crackle-pop.

It turns out that very few places sell linux LAPTOPS. The kind of machine
shipped with linux installed is mostly a high-end, server intended thing.
However, I was pointed to the linux.org homepage, which has a hardware
section. There I found AmNet computers, which I would guess is very much
a one-person-in-a-garage operation, but he provided us with a good laptop
(14" screen, cd-rom, modem, etc) for a decent price, with quick service.
So all is well. Thanks for the advice, all.

Could a couple of you guys post examples of /etc/fstab so that I can
rebuild mine?
(I'm esp. interested in entries for hdb1 and swap)

It would be much appreciated.

if you already have suse, doesn't it list all the hardware that it supports?

for redhat (which is close enough, in terms of hw support), you can go
to www.redhat.com and search for supported hardware list. I assume
the same is basically true of suse.

My point is more unless you are lucky, you are more likely to find something
that is still being sold.

When I got my new computer, I tried to get a Matrox Millenium G200, and the guy
building the computer couldn't find a PCI card anywhere (I have an Intel server
motherboard that doesn't have an AGP slot). I settled on the Diamond Viper
550, which uses the TNT chipset. I've been very pleased with the card,, it
seems to be very sharp. I suspect it is sharper and faster than my old
Millenium-II's, but I haven't really compared them head to head on the same
system, with the same monitor, lighting conditions, etc.

I've heard that the Diamond 770 TNT2 card is just as good assuming you edit the
XF86Config file to tell Xfree86 that it is a really a TNT-1 card. I think the
G400's are the same, though I don't really know. On the other hand, since
Diamond was just bought by S3, I wouldn't expect the 770 to have a long shelf
life. There is an Xserver by nVidia that supports all of their cards, but I
had problems with emacs using it.

For some chips, you have to go to the Xi (AcceleratedX) server to get support
immediately, for others, there are often times work arounds or RedHat/Suse will
pay people to do a port.

I vaguelly recall that G200 support wasn't in RedHat 5.2. Either upgrade to
the 3.3.3.1 drivers (ftp://updates.redhatcom/5.2/i386) or go to RedHat 6.0.

Netexpress, in California, build Linux-based Alpha and x86 servers
and workstations to order. You can select whatever parts they
stock, and they'll deliver your system assembled or not, at the
same price. Their website's a good resource in that each option
(motherboard, etc) in their configuration table is a link to
a menu of recommended hardware (a list of all motherboards they
carry, for instance), and the entries in that list in turn point
to the manufacturer's own page describing the part.

So you can learn a lot in a hurry, even if you have no intention
of buying from them.

They can be found at http://www.tdl.com/~netex

I just went through the entire online order process using my persoanl

care what the State of Illinois says, but I do know Dell does NOT charge
sales tax on shipments to Chicago. That doesn't mean they don't pay

What are you talking about read performance for a *web* server? *Write*
performance is the bottleneck. Here's why:

1.) Around 95% of all requests will go to 5% of the pages, and probably
1% when we are talking about size. Hence, almost all requests can be
served from the filesystem buffer, reducing the required read
performance to say 5% of the theoretical value, when all pages must be
read from disk.
So, be sure to equip your server with a huge amount of RAM (i.e. >1% of
overall servable volume). On or two Gigs (two being the upper limit for
linux) is not too much if your server will be really heavily loaded.

2.) 100% of all requests must be logged to the httpd log file, even
those, who did fail.

I would suggest a raid0 (striping) or raid1-(mirroring)-over-raid0 (if
you consider the log to be precious or you don't like to back them up
hourly or so) setup for a volume, where the log files reside and a raid1
(or raid1 over raid0 if you use more than 18 or 36 Gig of servable data)
setup - seperate maybe even when it comes to the controller - for the
servable data. Use the fastest read performance (with little files) disk
for the second and the fastest write performance (with moderate-to-large
files) disk for the first volume. Use a different disk where you store
the rest of the system on and make sure this 'rest of the system' is not
regularly accessed (i.e. it contains no w.r.t. web serving relevant logs
or such).

I'll draw a little picture for you:

 N vol. M volumes 1 or 2 vol.
+-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+
+-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+
+-----+ +-----+ +-----+
raid0* raid 1 or 0/1 maybe raid1 *experiment with chunk
or 0/1 sizes from 8K to 128K

  log data system <--used for

write read read <--performance optimized for ...

Marc

PS: as for the original question (see subject line): more of course (up
to a here-ends-the-road-any-sane-will-walk limit, of course)

Your modem is misconfigured. IRQ3 is occupied by COM2 , unless you manually

your radiocard problem :
since i got no personal experience with radio cards , i just can ask if
you have already compiled a new kernel that supports your card ??
if not, goto /usr/src/linux
type: "make xconfig" (while running X) else type: "make config"
make your kernel configuration, save it , then type :
"make dep; make clean; make bzImage; make modules; make
modules_install;"
dont forget to reconfigure lilo...

your soundcard problem :

you just need to load the module..
find the correct module for your soundcard and type something like :
modprobe gravis.o io=0x0220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=330
dont use these values...were just examples..
better read the /usr/doc/howto/en/EN-Sound-HOWTO.txt

hope that'll help ya.

Did you just run pnpdump, or did you create the isapnp.conf file in the
process with...
  pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
?
I believe the 5687-03 has jumpers on board, I have a 5687-02 which is
plug and play w/o
jumpers... Look at your modem and set the jumpers to the settings you
want. And then edit out the comment marks (#'s) in your isapnp.conf to
the settings on your modem. You'll probably need to mess with your
serial settings too... E-Mail me at

What's the driver name for the ethernet standard driver?

I am considering the purchase of either a Dell Inspiron 7K or Gateway 2K
Solo 9150 laptop and installing RH6 on it. I looked at the Linux Laptop
HOWTO, the Dell I7K HOWTO and an out of date Linux USB page.

While I know the base configuration (except for the crappy winmodem stuff)
of these laptops is supported I was wondering if anyone has experience
with configuring:
any of the USB wheel mice
 USB modems
serial digital cameras (specifically the Olympus D-320L).

I was also wondering about the support of two serial devices on one port
(the digital camera and palm pilot syncing). I've never run into a serial
port shortage on my other desktop machines ;)

Are there any projects out there for support of these devices I can assist
with should I purchase the notebook? I didn't find much on USB at the LDP
or RH sites.

TIA

Anyone successfully running on the NIC 3C515-TX? Autoprobe did not find it,
I am kinda lost on how to get the card recognized in RH 6.0...

I have a 2CX running under linux with SANE. I have it hooked up to
the adaptec 2920 card and it runs fine. The 2920 is not too expensive
and works great. Linux recongizes it as a future domain akrd though.

Hi,
I have 2 SMC EZ Cards in my linux box and they work great.

The cards have a realtek 8139 chipset, I'm using the rtl8139.o module
with Mandrake 6.0.

you can get the newest version at
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
