What IRQ is the device set on? If it is sharing the IRQ with COM1 (IRQ
4), this would cause these symptoms. Also, if the modem is set to IRQ 5,
and you haven't assigned the correct IRQ with setserial, you would see
the same symptoms.

The Opensound Project has some beta drivers. But it's commercial. You
still can try the evaluation version which gives you 20 minutes of
sound. That's what I'm doing now.
It's at http://www.opensound.com
But if somebody knows a better way, I'm grateful as well.

I have a viper 550 PCI card (the Intel motherboard I use is meant for a server
and doesn't have a AGP slot) and was running 82 Hz at 1600x1200 dpi, 32-bit
color, using a Nokia 446Xpro monitor. Note, I was running 85 Hz quite
successfully until I put in the Cybex switchbox, and there was some slight
distortion.
The 85 Hz modeline I used to use is:

+vsync
and the 82 Hz modeline I currently is:
Modeline "1600x1200_5" 220.000 1600 1616 1808 2080 1200 1204 1207 1244 +hsync

Dunno. It wouldn't affect refresh rates, but updating the screen would be

Check out the sound card listings at
<http://lhd.datapower.com/db/searchproduct.cgi?_catid=7> in the Linux
Hardware Database (they're listed under "Misc. IO" from the front page,
right now). There are some ratings, comments and workarounds by current
users for a few of the SoundBlaster cards you're looking at.
And, of course, come back when you get one of these cards and rate it, so it
will be easier for others to decide what hardware to get for use with Linux
and how to set it up.

Hi Brent,
hmm, seems to be more than one problem here... First, when you hit ctrl-alt-del
your system should do the same as 'shutdown -r now', thus correctly terminating
all running programs. Next, when you have started X with the wrong Xserver
(svga or any accelerated server) and you can't see anything, try hitting
ctrl-alt-backspace instead of ctrl-alt-del, this should send you back to
console.
Concerning your booting problems it would be helpful to know how you are going
to boot Linux. Do you use loadlin or lilo? Anyway, make sure you're booting
the correct partition; on a vanilla Linux box you may have three or more
partitions (root, swap, perhaps boot, and some windows/dos partition). In this
case use 'boot' as your starting partition, if you don't have any /boot, take
the root-partitiobn ( / ) of your system.

I have the Red Hat Linux Unleashed book that tells how to set up a PPP
connection. I followed all the directions, however I cannot get it to
work. I am using the command:
pppd connect "chat -f chatfile" /dev/cua2 -detach crtscts modem 127.0.0.1:
When I run this I get:
pppd: bad local IP address 127.0.0.1
The modem will dial and try to connect if I leave the 127.0.0.1: part out,
but with that part it does nothing but give the above error. I ran
ifconfig and checked the hosts file and that IP address is shown in both.
Can someone help me determine why it does not accept this IP address?

affects only in some warnings, but the result is, that every scan

I don't think it's so much a matter of which flavor, but it _is_ a
matter of what you will run on it. X-Window will probably run provided
you have a supported video card, but it will most likely be sluggish.
Here's my take on the distributions you mentioned, though:
Red Hat -- mainstream, pretty easy to install, everything the average
user could need and then some
Slackware -- for the hardcore Linux user, not too far from "rolling
your own"
Caldera -- a cinch to install, but the free version is a demo
Debian -- ideal for developers
Not much, but I hope I helped a little.

pricey, I would prefer to build the system myself.
Where are the best places to find QUALITY parts at REASONABLE
